RECORDING: This is Planned Parenthood Oceanside. We are located at 2110 South Coates Highway between Carlsbad and Oceanside. Please stay on the line and your call will be answered in the order it was received. For their safety and comfort we ask that you not bring children into the clinic. (Spanish interpretation.)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can you please hold?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: (pause) How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not here in this particular clinic. We, our clinic in Encinitas does. Do you want the phone number there?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 760-634-8333.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I actually ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Well, like my friend told me you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, that is not true at all. No. All your services here are completely confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just my parents can’t find out at all because like — well my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re in love and we’re going to get married, but they hate him because they think he’s too old for me, so if they found out they would — I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re 13?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And he’s 22?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. In a sense your friend is right. We wouldn’t notify your parents, but basically what that is is statutory rape. Even though you are — you feel you’re in love with him and all that.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: You’re still too young to where — you know what I mean? That’s the way that they — in the eyes of the law, that is statutory rape because a 22-year-old is above age and you’re 13. You’re still a minor.

CALLER: Yeah, but —

CLINIC: So I mean, if you were to come into the clinic, then yes that would be reportable to the authorities, but your parents would not be notified.

CALLER: But he has to bring me. There’s no other way I could get there.

CLINIC: That sounds — that’s a decision that you need to make. I’m just letting you know that there’s a possibility that you, that that could be reported because that’s against the law basically.

CALLER: Well, what should I say about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: They’re not going to ask you anything about your boyfriend.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So if I just don’t say anything it will be all right?

CLINIC: They’re going to give you paperwork to fill out, and it’s going to be up to you what you put on that paperwork.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So like, say that I wasn’t pregnant or anything? Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that or anything?

CLINIC: No. Like I said, all your services are completely confidential.

CALLER: Would you guys have to report my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Yes, we would. I just — I mean, just put it this way, okay? Just so that you can understand, he’s 22, you’re 13. Is there a reason why he can’t have a relationship with someone his own age that he —

CALLER: But we’re in love. I don’t understand. I mean —

CLINIC: Yes, but in the eyes of the law that doesn’t matter. Can you hold on one second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: (pause) Hello? I’m sorry about that. Yeah, you’d probably want to go in — regarding an abortion you want to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. That’s not something that you’d want to wait on. The sooner the better. And the less complicated it is. The further along you are, the more complicated it is and more expensive that it is. But like I said —

CALLER: But they would report my boyfriend.

CLINIC: Most likely they will.

CALLER: Well, what could I do? I don’t want him to get in trouble or anything.

CLINIC: I understand that, but I mean you just have to understand that that’s just in the eyes of the law that is what — it’s against the law regardless of you think that you’re in love. He’s an adult and you’re a minor, and they see it as you’re at an age where even though you feel like you love him, you’re still at a very impressionable age where you could be brainwashed to think that you love him, and it could — it’s just — it’s really hard to explain but even though you know and you feel that you’re in love with him, it’s still in the eyes of the law it’s against the law. And if he really loves you that much then why can’t he wait until you’re 18 and you’re above age to be with you?

CALLER: Well, all right. Do you — is it all right — like I need to talk to him. But is it all right if I call you back? Like you really helped out a lot. But could — I just — is it all right if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: That’s fine, or if I were you I would call Encinitas and schedule that appointment for as soon as possible because like I said that’s — for an abortion. You want to do it as soon as possible.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I talk to you again?

CLINIC: Okay, yeah. My name is Heidi.

CALLER: Heidi?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
