(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood of Annapolis. This is Celia. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t provide those type of services here, but I can go ahead and give you the Vallejo (sp) number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 643-4545.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I was just really worried about everything because like — well, I’m going to be 14 in March. And my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — 22. Could he just take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Uhh, I’m not sure about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If I were you I’d just call them and ask.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Probably not today. Today we’re having a staff meeting. So if you want you can probably come back next Tuesday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay, but would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like if — the only way I’d be able to get there is if my boyfriend brought me. Would he be able to come in with me though?

CLINIC: Inside?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, if he wanted to.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just — he was going to pay for everything, but he doesn’t want my parents to find out at all. So he just doesn’t’ want anybody to find out about us. Would he have to sign a lot of papers if he was paying for it?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: As for confidential reasons? No. That you were in here taking birth control or having a pregnancy test? No.

CALLER: Okay. But it’s just – my friend said that you would have to tell a whole bunch of different people, so.

CLINIC: Sometimes — see the thing is, with his age being 22, we would have to report it.

CALLER: Why? To who?

CLINIC: Because you’re 14 and he’s 22.

CALLER: Well, who do you —

CLINIC: If you were 18 that would be a different thing. But see the thing is, you’re not an adult yet.

CALLER: Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: I mean, you can come in here and take the pregnancy test and you know, we’ll go from there. We’ll do the counseling. If you’re not pregnant we can get you on birth control, but we will have to probably report it you know.

CALLER: To who?

CLINIC: To the, probably to the police department.

CALLER: Well, what would happen? I mean, I don’t want to get in trouble. Are they going to arrest me?

CLINIC: No, they wouldn’t arrest you.

CALLER: Well, what — why do you have to tell them then?

CLINIC: Because we are supposed to report everything. We’re mandatory. We have to report it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, should I just not bring him with me then?

CLINIC: I mean, you can do it either way. I mean, and when you come in here we can go ahead and give you the counseling.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: So either way — if you want what we can do — do you have insurance?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we can — if you don’t have — you don’t have insurance though?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. You can go ahead and come in, and we can see if you’re state funding. If you’re not stating funding, do you know for a fact that you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, no, I’m just — I haven[‘t had my period since like December, so I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, what you can do is just go ahead and come in and we can do the pregnancy test and we’ll see if the state will cover you for a visit, and then we’ll go ahead and do the counseling.

CALLER: Well, would you have to report me if I come in though?

CLINIC: We’re probably going to, yeah.

CALLER: Oh. Well, why would I want to come in then?

CLINIC: To see if you’re pregnant. Are you going to — are you planning to keep this child if you are?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. If — you need to come in to get the verification. If you don’t then you probably won’t be able to get an abortion. That’s what they need for like in Planned Parenthood in Vallejo if you’re going to go there to get an abortion. They would need the verification stating that you are pregnant and how far along you are.

CALLER: Well, what if I was out with a 22-year-old boyfriend? What if he was like 13?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: What if I wasn’t with a 22-year-old boyfriend? What if my boyfriend was like 13?

CLINIC: Well, that would be a different thing.

CALLER: Oh, but you wouldn’t have to report anything then?

CLINIC: Well, if he was 13, I mean do your parents know?

CALLER: Well, they don’t know that me and my boyfriend are having sex. I mean, they know him. But. If they found out that we were having sex I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: That’s why they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Yeah. (pause) Did you want to come in to get a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, not if I’m going to be reported.

CLINIC: I mean, if you — do you understand why though? Because I mean, the age difference?

CALLER: Well, but, but — my boyfriend will get in trouble if I come in?

CLINIC: We will just need to probably report it and see, you know, if it’s consensual sex, you know?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But, yeah, we would have to.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any other place I could go where they wouldn’t tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. I’m not sure.

CALLER: Okay. I just don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: If you want — like I said you can come in on Tuesday and get that pregnancy test done.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But as long as I come in you’re going to tell?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Well, I’m going to have to call my boyfriend and see. Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. That would be great.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name again?

CLINIC: Lilly.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
