(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Concord Planned Parenthood. This is Jason.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much do those cost?

CLINIC: It depends how far along you are. Do you know how far along you are?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: No? When was your last period?

CALLER: Well, it was December 21st.

CLINIC: December 21st?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: (pause) All right. You’d be about 9 1/2 weeks right now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So our starting fees are usually about $345.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you have any sort of medical coverage or —

CALLER: Well, no, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. So we normally tell people it’s $345, and then to bring like an extra $80 for extra medications that you may need because we do give you Motrin and Valium if you choose to take Valium. If you have the Valium you do need a ride home.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just worried because my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parent. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’m not sure about all that. Would you want to talk to somebody about that?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second.

CALLER: Yeah, hi.

CLINIC: Hi. Are you wanting to make an appointment for an abortion?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I was just wondering if like — well, I’m just — I was asking Jason if it’s just my friend told me that if I’m going to — like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: And she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Right. Let me check okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: (pause)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, I’m going to find out for you. Can you give me your name and your number and I’ll call you back?

CALLER: Well, I’m at my friend’s house, and her mom’s here, and if you called she would answer the phone, and I would get in trouble.

CLINIC: Oh. You have a cell phone or anything?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Then do you want to call me back?

CALLER: All right. What’s your name?

CLINIC: Arthie (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Give me an hour.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Bye.

(phone clicks)

(dial sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Cindy. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Can I talk to Arthie, please?

CLINIC: Sure. Who’s calling?

CALLER: This is Christine.

CLINIC: Hold on.

CLINIC: Hi, this is Arthie.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was the one that you told to call back in an hour. I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold on? I’m just finishing up with one call. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hi. Okay, do you want me to make you an appointment?

CALLER: Well, you told me you were going to have to tell me about my boyfriend, so.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. I mean, you don’t need anybody to come in to have your — to have an abortion done. You don’t need permission from anyone.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But is it all right if he comes in with me though?

CLINIC: If he comes into the room with you?

CALLER: Well, like if he’s there. Like if he brings me.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, that’s fine. I mean, it’s none of our — we don’t, you know, tell you who to bring and who not to bring.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that’s fine.

CALLER: It’s just, I don’t want anybody to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Would he have to sign anything if he was here?

CLINIC: No. He has nothing to do with it. This is a procedure that has just to do with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Nobody else.

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you come in —

CALLER: I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and —

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to come in today and take a pregnancy test first?

CALLER: What time are you guys open until?

CLINIC: We’re open until 8:00. You can come here until 6:00, and I can run a pregnancy test for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but probably.

CLINIC: Okay. I think that would be really advisable for you to do today, and then we can schedule an appointment while you’re here.

CALLER: Okay, well, how soon would I be able to get birth control if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Tomorrow.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. But I want you to come in today for your test first.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: What time should I come then?

CLINIC: Any time before 6:00.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I was on birth control would you guys have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. It’s totally private.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, so will you come in today?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.
