CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Val Phillips Clinic. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t do them here, but we do them in our other clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. Just hang on. I was just going to grab it. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. There’s two in Milwaukee. There’s Affiliated on Farwall (sp) and then we have one on Jackson, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And the Jackson Street one is 276-8777. And they’re open today 8:00 to 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you real quick, like I’m just worried about all this because like, well I’m going to be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: And my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But –

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Are you 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Well, that could be a liability problem.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Just hang on. I’m going to get a little information. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, thanks for holding. The thing is, you have to consider that because you are 13 and your boyfriend is 22 that that is statutory rape.

CALLER: What? But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He said he was going to take care of me for the rest of my life.

CLINIC: Well, but, I mean, but that’s not how our laws work. Okay?

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I understand that, but you try and get him involved we are liable, and we need to report it. I would not — just so you know that. Your other route is — do you have a family member that is 25 years or older who would vouch for you? Or to get a clergy-member or to get the courts to listen. They do that all the time. You go and see the DA and then you present your case of why you do not want — you don’t want to have that child. And then they can — they’ll just ask you questions and then they’ll vouch for you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do they usually say yes?

CLINIC: A lot of the times that I’ve experienced, yes. Definitely if you — because it is your choice. So they just have to make sure hat you’re sound mind and everything like that, so it’s kind of a technicality really.

CALLER: Well, would they do anything? Would they ask about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Well, that’s what if you mention it, yeah. They’ll — the law requires them that they report it. So that’s up to you what you’re going to tell them. If they ask you questions know that if you do tell them that age and everything or if he’s with you or anything, they will take matters in their own hands.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: The abortion?

CALLER: The judicial thing.

CLINIC: No, that’s part of a service.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Would they have to tell my mom and dad or anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No. No, they don’t. They do not need to. That is something that you do on your own like that’s why you’re going to them.

CALLER: Okay. So if my boyfriend didn’t come in I could get a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. Well if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control though?

CLINIC: Right, absolutely you can get birth control.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: No, don’t need to tell anybody about that. We are confidential about what we talk about to the point and what services we do give you. We don’t need permission for anybody to give you birth control or to do testing. Only your own permission.

CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend then?

CLINIC: Well, just hang on. I want to ask one question about that. Do you know what I want to do is take your name and phone number, okay? Can I do that? And call you back? I just want to clarify stuff for you, make sure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I call you back real quick? I just have to get my boyfriend’s cell phone number because that’s the one that he wanted to use, but I can’t — I don’t remember what it is right now.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. You can call me back. I’m just going to verify some things before I tell you because I don’t want to tell you anything that I’m not sure of. So why don’t you give me a call back in about 10 minutes, okay?

CALLER: All right. So what was your name so I can call you back?

CLINIC: My name is Carrie, C-A-R-R-I-E. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(phone clicks)

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Val Phillips Center. This is Deb.

CALLER: Hi. Is Carrie there?

CLINIC: She is. Can I tell her who’s calling?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on, Christine.

CLINIC: Hello, this is Carrie. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi, yeah. I was talking to you earlier about –

CLINIC: Right. I know. I left a message with my administration, and I’m just waiting to hear back from them for the current, you know, updated things about what the issues are and everything. So I tried, I called a couple people but they were gone at lunch. But they’re going to get back to me.

CALLER: Okay. When would be –

CLINIC: They should be back to me shortly. If they don’t call me by 1:30 I’m going to call them again and then if you want to you can either call me back at 2:00 or I can call you back.

CALLER: Well, I should probably call you –

CLINIC: You want to call me?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: At 2:00?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Because we’re open until 6;00 if you’d want to come in and get some testing and stuff.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I don’t want my boyfriend to get in trouble if I came in. So.

CLINIC: Right. Either do I.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I mean, I want what you want to a point, but I also want what’s healthy, okay? And I want to do what’s right. That’s why I want to let you know the facts, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, and what is your name, Christi?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Right. Okay. Then just give me a call back and ask for Carrie. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

(phone clicks)

(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Val Phillips. This is Deb.

CALLER: Hi. Is Carrie there?

CLINIC: She is. Can I tell her who’s calling?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Hi there. This is Carrie.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Yeah. I talked to the administration. Basically you know, I’m just can give general information with the phones for like I said was if any client comes in to any of our Planned Parenthoods, abortion clinics, whatever, and somebody tells us they’re 13 and their partner is — the person says they’re one age and then a partner of a different age, depending on the law or what age you are we have to, we are liable as healthcare providers, to report to a specific agency. So that’s anywhere you go. But that’s all the general information –

CALLER: Well, what does all that mean?

CLINIC: What?

CALLER: What does all that mean?

CLINIC: It just means that if you go in to any other Planned Parenthood or anyplace or health place, especially the state-funded and everything, anyplace even private healthcare provider has to by law report if there is a minor with somebody that is not a minor. So if you tell of if any client mentions this, that person would have to under law contact authorities.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If that is not known, then that’s not known.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: That’s what matters, you know? So that’s basically — and that’s the only general information –

CALLER: So if I don’t say anything about it it will be all right?

CLINIC: Well, I can’t say that either. Like I’m not supposed to say anything about that. But I think you got the picture, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, if I come in for a pregnancy test and it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Of course you could. Definitely. So I would call a place that doesn’t know you or first name or name.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You know where you’re close to? I can refer you to one?

CALLER: Well, I’m just in Milwaukee here, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know where all the clinics are?

CALLER: Yeah. I got, my boyfriend gave me a list of them to call, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Because of our discussion I would be — you know. You can call –

CALLER: So I should go someplace else then?

CLINIC: I’m not trying to say that, but (laughs). I’m not denying, but you know, since I know what I know I’m just telling you what I generally would have to do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Does that make sense?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: But I definitely want you to get service, okay?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But there’s a good 10 other clinics too.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I hope I helped. Do you have any other questions?

CALLER: No. I don’t think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. You take care, and good luck to you, and yeah. I hope everything goes okay. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Amy. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: The closest abortion clinic is in Appleton.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yeah. Hold on one moment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no, not yet.

CLINIC: Not yet?

CALLER: Uh-uh. I’m just really scared because like well I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Have you done a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No?

CALLER: I didn’t know that those were right.

CLINIC: Well, they’re as accurate as the one that I can do here as one the doctor could do — other than a blood test.

CALLER: Oh. It’s just — the thing is, I’m really worried about all this because like, well I’m going to be 14 in March and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: The state of Wisconsin requires written permission from an adult relative, 25 or older.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents though? I don’t know anyone else besides him that’s older than that.

CLINIC: Well, you could go to a judge and we could help you get that set up.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, to go to the judge to have a judicial bypass is free because it would go through the county. But for me to do, for me to sign you up and everything I’d have to run the pregnancy test and have a positive pregnancy test here in order to do that.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: I think it’s probably going to be like $50 or $60. You also need to know that the state of Wisconsin laws, that is such that you have to have at least 24 hours from a counseling visit at the abortion clinic to the actual procedure. And they only do procedures in Appleton during the week.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. It’s just, would he have to — he just doesn’t want to have anybody to tell anybody like he doesn’t want my parents to find out. So –

CLINIC: Well, the reason he doesn’t want your parents to find out is because they’ll probably press charges against him. And even if they don’t –

CALLER: Why? What for?

CLINIC: Well, even at — for statutory rape because he’s –

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: No. No. I’m not saying he is. But because he’s over the age of 18 and you’re only 14, it’s against the law for him to be having intercourse with you no matter what. And even if they don’t press charges, the state of Wisconsin might.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: He could go to jail.

CALLER: Well, who would tell on him?

CLINIC: I certainly wouldn’t. But — I’m not saying anybody really would.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But it is against the law. I mean, if you — he probably doesn’t want you to tell your parents because they could press charges.

CALLER: He said it was — he didn’t want me to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Well, that’s — you know, that could be the other thing. He doesn’t want you in trouble.

CALLER: Well, could we come in there together if, to get a pregnancy test, because he would be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Yes. We can schedule a pregnancy test for you.

CALLER: Oh. But would he get in trouble?

CLINIC: I’m not going to turn him in. The nurse practitioner that works here isn’t going to turn him in. She’s probably going to lecture him a little bit.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: He’ll probably hear a little bit of lecturing, but I certainly wouldn’t turn him in. And neither would she.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But, you know, if you have — do you have like a cousin or aunt or uncle or somebody that would take you to the abortionist over the age of 25?

CALLER: No, I don’t have any relatives up here.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So. All my family lives in Texas, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Are your parents here?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I mean, I live with my parents, but I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: Right. Let me look at the schedule for today and then I can tell you when I can have you come in.

CALLER: Well, if I went to the judge would I Have to tell him about my boyfriend though?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know about how — I’ve never had to do a judicial bypass before. But the nurse practitioner has had to do that before. She would know more about that than I do.

CALLER: Do you know if they ever say no?

CLINIC: No. As far as I know they’ve never said no.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I mean, if your age is — if you’re 14, he’s going to probably guarantee pretty much do it because you’re so young. If you told the judge that your boyfriend’s 25, he may –

CALLER: He’s only 22.

CLINIC: Or 22, he may turn him in.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? If you two were married, he could sign off for it. But you’re not married, and you can’t get married in the state of Wisconsin without your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Do your parents know that you’re dating him?

CALLER: Well, yeah. They just don’t really like him. They don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Right. You have school until 3:00?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: You’re homeschooled?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. The office opens at 11:00. When do you want to come in then? What we have open is an 11:45, a 12:45 or anything from 1:00 until 2:00 in 15-minute increments, and then we have like a 2:45 and a 3:00. When could he bring you?

CALLER: Probably at lunchtime. Is the 12:45 one all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. The main reason why I’m wondering about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st. And if I came in for a pregnancy test is there any way that I wouldn’t be pregnant, you think?

CLINIC: There’s a possibility. You’re still young. It’s like your system is probably still growing. And it’s possible that you’re going to have abnormal periods for several years before it regulates out. And it’s possible that all of a sudden it can just quit. You know, if you’ve had a normal period for a year and then all of a sudden it will just quit for a few months, that’s pretty normal at your young age. I’m not guaranteeing that’s what’s going on. What we can do is, we can run a pregnancy test. Have you guys used any kind of birth control whatsoever at all?

CALLER: No. That’s what I was going to ask you next, if we could get on birth control if I wasn’t pregnant.

CLINIC: If the pregnancy comes back negative, we can look at getting you on something to start, like the pills is usually the pretty easiest one to start.

CALLER: Okay. But nobody would have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Not unless you told them.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Because everything remains confidential here. It would be like going in Marshfields clinic into a doctor’s office. Okay? Let’s see. What’s your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith.

CLINIC: SMITH?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Is that with a K or a C?

CALLER: A C-H.

CLINIC: It’s T-I-N-E?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Compared — like looking to see if there’s any Christine Smiths in the system. (laughs) Have you ever been seen in a Planned Parenthood in the state of Wisconsin before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your street address?

CALLER: Oh. Well, is it all right if I give you like my boyfriend’s?

CLINIC: You can give me his.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just don’t know it right now, but could I call you back and –

CLINIC: Well, no, you can just give it to me when you’re here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: That’s some of the information that we ask for. Do you live in Marshfield here?

CALLER: I live in Stratford.

CLINIC: What’s the zip code in Stratford?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here. So.

CLINIC: All right. Do you have a phone number that we can reach you at?

CALLER: My boyfriend has a cell phone that he just got, but I don’t know the number for that either.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I give you that this afternoon?

CLINIC: You can give me that information when you come in.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what else would you need if I, when I come in?

CLINIC: What we need — well, you probably don’t work at all.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: And you live with your parents?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Basically what we need is a billing address, some place we can send a bill if he doesn’t pay all of it today.

CALLER: Well, he said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Right. Some way –

CALLER: How much would it be today?

CLINIC: I’m going to figure it’s going to be about $50 bucks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just off the top of my head, all right? It’s probably going to be less than that, but that’s just a guess, depending upon how much we have to do. And if you’re not pregnant then we can put you on the pill, and then you can take a couple packs of pills and –

CALLER: Well, if I needed the abortion, how much would that be?

CLINIC: Needed to have what?

CALLER: The abortion, like if I was pregnant and I was going to get an abortion? How much is an abortion?

CLINIC: To give you a good guess, about $400.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I’m not — you know, I don’t have the fees here in this office for the abortions because we’re just a family planning clinic. But I can give you all that — you know, I will give you the number to call Appleton.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s an 800 number that you can call there, and they could tell you how much it would be.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: For that kind of thing.

CALLER: So if he brought $50 today no one would have to be billed or anything?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we still need a billing address. They do not send any mail to anybody unless we say yes, but we need to have a billing address. We also need –

CALLER: Is it all right if I give you my boyfriend’s address?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Give me his address, and then I also need a phone number, some way to reach you, either his home phone number or his cell phone number, whatever. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay. So is it all right if I call you back with that then?

CLINIC: You can give me that when you come in.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. So 12:45 today?

CLINIC: Yeah. We’ll see you at 12:45 for a pregnancy test and then we’ll go from there on what other services you may or may not need.

CALLER: Okay. Who would I talk to when I get there?

CLINIC: Just check in at the front desk here. When you walk in the door there’s a window. Just check in by the window. Who is ever here will help you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? It’s usually Nancy, but whoever is by the window will help you.

CALLER: Okay. And what was your name again?

CLINIC: I’m Amy.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I’m the medical assistant, so I’ll be the one running the pregnancy test and talking to the two of you when you’re here and then determining what we need to do and how we’re going to do it. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure that no one would have to know that I’m there?

CLINIC: Nobody will know that you are here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Unless you tell them.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: And I just want you to know, I do encourage all of my young patients to tell parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I really do. I feel that it’s the best to be open and honest with them. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I’m not going to go and call them and tell them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s not my place, but I do encourage my patients to talk to their parents, especially if they’re pregnant and they’re seeking an abortion.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right? Well, see you when you get here at 12:45.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, West End.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do not perform abortions at this clinic, but I can give you two telephone numbers for where they are performed.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, one moment.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: (pause) Okay, do you have a pen and paper handy?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you prefer Milwaukee or Appleton?

CALLER: Probably Appleton.

CLINIC: Appleton? Okay. Telephone number is 920-731-9534,

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I go there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Sure. They can — I mean, have you taken the home pregnancy test already?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since December 14.

CLINIC: Okay. Taking a home pregnancy test would probably be your first thing that you want to do. If that’s positive and you want to have an abortion, then you call them.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would just rather come see you guys because my friend said that you guys were a better place to go. So.

CLINIC: Okay. How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: My friend also told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could you guys — or could he just sign whatever and you wouldn’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: No, he has to be — it has to be a parent, a brother, sister, aunt and uncle or grandparent over the age of 25.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Or there is another way you can do it. You can go through the court system and be granted what they call a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: A judicial bypass is where you go and sit in front of a judge and a judge deems whether or not you’re responsible enough to make a decision to have an abortion. And it’s done through the Milwaukee County Court System.

CALLER: Well, do I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: Yep. They hook you up with a public defender that takes care of those things.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: That I do not know.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know if the judge ever says no?

CLINIC: They can, yes. I mean, I can’t guarantee you that he’s going to grant you, that he’s going to say yes. I mean, it depends on the individual, depends on the situation, depends on all those things.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I came in for a pregnancy test, like I would want my boyfriend to be there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah. That would be fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. We’re protected by Wisconsin state statute that states you have the right to receive birth control without your parents knowing about it.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just — my boyfriend and I talked about it, and we just don’t want anybody to know about us. Would you guys have to say anything or have him sign anything?

CLINIC: No. You’re — all your services are confidential here.

CALLER: All right. Well, would it be all right — like since — it’s just I don’t drive yet. Would it be all right if he picked up the birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Yeah. He can pick up your pills, but you’d have to come in and have an exam before we can even give you birth control pills.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to set up an appointment for something like that?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see, but yeah I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you call and check with him first and then give us a call back. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Let me call him and then I’ll call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Jodie. I’m the nurse.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay, sure. Um-hmm. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. That would be 920-731-9534.

CALLER: Where is that?

CLINIC: That is Appleton North.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So if you call them, they will help you, okay?

CALLER: Well, could I ask a quick question? I’m just really scared because my friend told me that — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and then you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We are suppose to have confidentiality. And I’m not sure on the age limit on that. But you call the girls up there in Appleton, and they know everything about that. So they can help you with that. I don’t want to give you any false information. But that’s what they do up there. They handle it. They know everything about it, and they can answer all your questions.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: You could do that, yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s kind of expensive. Have you tried an at-home?

CALLER: No. I just didn’t know if they were right. I would really rather to come in there where you guys are at and know for sure.

CLINIC: Okay. The store-bought ones are very effective. I just want you to know that because the prices are fairly expensive.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: It’s probably like $30 for a pregnancy test, just so you know. But if you really want to do that, you can do that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would really like my boyfriend to be there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: For your pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s just a urine test. And they usually don’t have them go in the room or anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But is it okay if he’s out in the waiting room with me?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. Yeah.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. I don’t think so. Just hold on a second.

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. This is what I think you should try, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I think you should try a test from the store. And if that’s not good, you come in here — how long has it been?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay. I’ll tell you what. Call the Appleton Clinic, talk to one of them, and they’ll tell you what to do. If you need to come in here today, we really need you to get in here by noon, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you talk to them first and see what they say.

CALLER: But would it be all right if my boyfriend came with me today? Because I wouldn’t have any other way to get there. I can’t drive.

CLINIC: Right. Yeah. No, that’s not a problem. They just don’t let them in the exam rooms, that’s all.

CALLER: But no one would say anything about him?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because we just talked about it, and we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know about anything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So you sure you wouldn’t tell anybody —

CLINIC: No, no. We can’t. But you need to call the Appleton Clinic first because you have time issues and you have other things going on there. So you call them first, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. I’ll talk to you later.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 3x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No. There’s no place in the Eau Claire that does abortions.

CALLER: Oh. Do you know of anyplace that might though?

CLINIC: The Twin Cities is the closest.

CALLER: Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: There’s a few places there.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Do you want the ones that just have 800 numbers?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: There is Meadowbrook Women’s Clinic, 1-800-721-7708.

CALLER: I’m just really scared. I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents about it. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You have a couple of different options. If you have a brother or a sister that’s over the age of 25, or a grandparent, or I believe an aunt or uncle can give consent.

CALLER: I don’t have anybody.

CLINIC: Or you can get what’s called a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. What is that?

CLINIC: They can help you out with that when you call the clinic.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Do you know how much that cost or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think that cost anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It’s just you meet with a judge, and he says it’s okay for you to get an abortion without your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Well, does he ever say no?

CLINIC: As far as I know it’s usually pretty easy to get.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: And they can help you out with all that when you call the clinic. You can ask them about judicial bypass.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just really worried. I don’t know what to do because my last period was December 14th, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you done a pregnancy test though?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. We have a full schedule today, but we’re not busy now if you wanted to come in now.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see if he could bring me.

CLINIC: Or you can just get a test over the counter.

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: They’re just exactly the ones we do. So you can just get a test and run it, and you’re going to get an accurate result as long as you follow the directions.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend and I talked about it, and we don’t want anybody to know about this. Would you guys have to say anything?

CLINIC: No. It’s all confidential.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: You sure could.

CALLER: Because I just don’t want to have to worry about this again.

CLINIC: Yep, you sure could.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody I was getting birth control though?

CLINIC: No. It’s completely confidential. We’re actually more confidential than the regular doctor’s office. Because your mom can call the doctor and ask him questions; they can’t call here and ask questions.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I won’t tell anything about your care here unless I have your written consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell about my boyfriend either?

CLINIC: (No response).

CALLER: Well, he just doesn’t want anyone to be asking questions, and we don’t want anybody to know at all.

CLINIC: (Pause) As long as we’re doing your care, your care is confidential.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Could you hold on for just a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

(Pause)

(Call disconnected)

(Dialing, phone did not ring)

RECORDING: You have reached the Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin Auclair (ph) Clinic’s voicemail system. We are either closed or on another line at this time. Our address is 1231 Monaminy (ph) Street. Our phone number is 715-833-2279. Our clinic hours are Monday, 12 to 7; Wednesday —

(Call disconnected)

(Dialing, phone ringing 3x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was on hold, and it got disconnected. I don’t know who I was talking to.

CLINIC: Okay. I just need you to hold on for another second.

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. So you said your boyfriend is 22.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. And you are?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: So you know that this is illegal.

CALLER: What’s illegal? What do you mean?

CLINIC: For him to be having sex with you at 13.

CALLER: Why? I don’t understand. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: This is illegal, and it’s reportable to the police.

CALLER: What could happen?

CLINIC: And because you’re under 18, we would have to report it to the police if you came here.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: This is not a good relationship for you to be in. If he is 22 and you’re only 13, do you realize he’s an adult and you are still an adolescent?

CALLER: He’s a great guys. He said he was going to take care of me until we’re old and gray.

CLINIC: I guy told me the same thing 10 years ago, and I haven’t seen him, and I have a nine-year-old daughter.

CALLER: Yeah, but he’s a sweetheart. He wouldn’t do that.

CLINIC: Guys will do that. Men will do anything and say anything to have sex with you. They will.

CALLER: But he loves me.

CLINIC: And they will say that too.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: You can still come here, but we do have to report it.

CALLER: Well, then I can’t come there. I don’t want him to get in trouble and go to jail.

CLINIC: But if he is 22 having sex with a 13-year-old — if you had a 13-year-old daughter, what would you say if she came to you and said I’m having sex with a 22-year-old man?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: You would freak out.

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I mean, if they were in love and happy.

CLINIC: You know in 10 years when you’re 23, you could be in love and happy. But your body is still changing so much that —

CALLER: Well, what should I do then? What can I do?

CLINIC: Well, I can’t tell you what to do. But this is not a relationship that you should be in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that is exactly why he doesn’t want you to tell anybody, because he knows that it’s wrong, and he knows that he will go to jail.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s why you’re not suppose to tell anybody.

CALLER: Well, he said he just didn’t want me to get in trouble because —

CLINIC: No. He doesn’t want himself to get in trouble. You won’t get in trouble.

CALLER: I won’t? Well, if my parents found out, I’d get in big trouble.

CLINIC: Well, he doesn’t want to get in trouble, and he doesn’t want to go to jail. That’s why he told you not to tell anybody? He knows that it’s wrong, and he knows that this is something he shouldn’t be doing.

CALLER: Well, I can’t — I don’t know who to talk to. I don’t know what to do then. I mean, if he wasn’t there for me, I don’t — there’s nobody.

CLINIC: At 13 it’s so easy to think that. And I remember thinking exactly the same thing. It doesn’t seem like it, but you do have people that are there for you.

CALLER: Well, what can I do about all of this? What can I do? I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: First of all we need to make sure that you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: But if I come in there, you have to send my boyfriend to jail?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: So where can I go then? Is there anyplace that I can go?

CLINIC: You can buy an over-the-counter test if you don’t want to come in here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you really should come in here and get on protection, and probably get some tests done to make sure that he hasn’t given you any diseases.

CALLER: Would you tell?

CLINIC: Yes, we would report that he was having sex with you. Under law we have to because you’re under 18.

CALLER: Okay. So you just want me to come in there and have my boyfriend go to jail, and I’ll never see him ever again. I mean, I don’t want to come in if my boyfriend’s going to be sent to jail.

CLINIC: Well, this behavior he is having is wrong. This is a relationship that should not happen.

CALLER: But we’re in love.

CLINIC: You know, it might sound like it’s coming from an old adult that doesn’t know anything, but you don’t know what love is yet. It might feel like it. And I know at 13 you think everything is wonderful and you’re going to live happily ever after — at 18 I still thought that. And he told me he was going to take care of me forever, and we were going to live happily ever after. Got me in bed, left and never came back.

CALLER: But he wouldn’t do that.

CLINIC: You don’t know that.

CALLER: Yeah, I do. I mean, well — what can I do? I don’t know what to do. Is there anything I can do?

CLINIC: Well, what I think you should do and what you think you should do are two different things.

CALLER: What do you think I should do?

CLINIC: I think you should get a pregnancy test and make sure you’re not pregnant. And you need to end the relationship. Even if you don’t come in here and we don’t report it, you still need to end the relationship. Because this is wrong for him to be doing this. There’s got to be something wrong in his mind for him —

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in and get birth control so that I wouldn’t have to worry about this anymore?

CLINIC: You could. But if you tell us about him, he still has to be reported for having sex with somebody under 16.

CALLER: But if I don’t tell you, it will be okay?

CLINIC: Well, you need to be open and honest with your caregivers. You need to tell them everything so that they know the best way to help you.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, I don’t know what to do now. But could I call and ask you if I had any other questions?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Nickie (sp).

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And you can call me anytime I’m here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: When are you normally there?

CLINIC: Whenever the clinic’s open I’m here. So Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: You bet. Bye.

CLINIC: Madison Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that does?

CLINIC: Yeah. The only place in Madison is the Madison Abortion Clinic. And their number — do you have a pen handy?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: 251-5900 is their number.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Unfortunately it does have to be a family member.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have to — I don’t know.

CLINIC: Do you have any brothers or sisters or extended family?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Then the only other thing is you can go to court. What do they call it? Like request that they grant you — I forget the name of it, but request that you can get out of that. And I don’t know what that process is like. But if you were to call the clinic, the Madison Abortion Clinic, I bet you anything they could give you more information on that.

CALLER: Do you know if they ever say no?

CLINIC: No. I don’t know. Just because we don’t perform them here I don’t have the details. But like I said, I bet that they would be able to give you more information at the Madison Abortion Clinic if you could give them a call.

CALLER: Would it be all right to come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Have you taken a home one yet?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m just really scared because my last period was December 14th, and I’m just worried.

CLINIC: Are you having any other symptoms?

CALLER: Not that I know of.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Yeah. On Monday between 12:30 and 6:00 we do pregnancy testing, and you can just walk in for that on Monday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No, definitely not.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would really like if my boyfriend was there. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: That’s completely fine. That’s great.

CALLER: He’s just worried that you guys would ask a lot of questions. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Nothing, absolutely not.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: He can just come for support.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Possibly that day or on another day we could definitely do that for you.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. It’s completely confidential. (?) have access to that knowledge except for you or anybody you allowed to have access to it.

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend and I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Right, definitely. So yeah, we could definitely do that. That would be really smart it sounds like.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Could I call and talk to you if I had any other questions?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: Chelsea (sp).

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Wisconsin (?). This is Rebecca.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: You’d have to call the clinic on Jackson Street. And I can give you the number there.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s 276-8777.

CALLER: Okay. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’d have to ask them over there. They handle everything related to abortions. I couldn’t really give you accurate information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: If you’d have the abortion done, they’d have to give you a pregnancy test there anyway. So you might as well just go there.

CALLER: Well, my friend just told me to go to you guys because it was better to go there.

CLINIC: Well, this is a Planned Parenthood also. But this is the only Planned Parenthood that deals with abortions, the number that I just gave you. We don’t do anything abortion-related here. So you’d have to call that number and have everything — I mean, you could come here and do a pregnancy test, but they do one again when you got there anyway. So you’d be getting double services.

CALLER: Well, I just don’t know. I haven’t had one yet, and I’m scared because my last period was December 14th, and I’m just worried. I would just rather go in there real quick and see.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we’re open for pregnancy testing until noon today.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if my boyfriend’s there with me though?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Because I wouldn’t have any other way to get there.

CLINIC: That’s fine. But we stop doing them at noon.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Would anybody have to know about us or ask any questions or anything?

CALLER: No, everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, but we couldn’t give you any today because there’s no nurse practitioner on staff.

CALLER: Well, how soon would I be able to get —

CLINIC: You’d have to come back in. Our walk-ins are Monday. She won’t be here until after 12, so we’ll be seeing a couple patients between 12 and 2. And then our next walk-in day is Wednesday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody about it?

CLINIC: No, everything is confidential here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right — the problem is I’m not old enough to drive. Could my boyfriend pick up the birth control pills or whatever?

CLINIC: You would have to be here in order to receive the pills yourself. We can’t dispense any kind of medication to anybody but the patients.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So if you want to get birth control pills, I’d probably come down on Wednesday. You could come in on a walk-in. You might end up waiting a while. But you could be seen by the nurse practitioner. We could do the pregnancy test. And then if you’re negative, we can start you on birth control right away.

CALLER: Okay. What was the number for the clinic again?

CLINIC: The Jackson Street clinic?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 276-8777. But you’d have to be pregnant in order to go there. They don’t do any other services there. It’s just an abortion clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I wouldn’t be able to get birth control there?

CLINIC: No. You’d have to come and get an exam for that. And our next walk-in day is Wednesday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Lincoln Plaza. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Our clinic does not. It’s the Jackson Street location. Do you want that phone number, ma’am?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one moment. I’ve got to get my little cheat-sheet of phone numbers. Okay. Their phone number is 276-8777.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s a 414.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just really worried because like my — like I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. Now are you 18?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If you are under the age of 18 to get an AB you need to have someone that’s 25 or older, like do you have a sibling at all that’s 25 or older?

CALLER: No. I’m the oldest.

CLINIC: Do you have an aunt that you can talk to?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You’ll have to do something. You might be able to get like a court bypass. Can you hold on one moment? I’ll get you some information?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on. Okay, ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay, what you need, what you’re probably going to want to do is something called — you have no other family members that you can confide in with this?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re going to want to do what’s known as a court bypass, okay?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And basically you file a petition to wave consent. And then basically at the public defender’s office at no charge they will act as your advocate and will accompany you to see a judge in a confidential meeting. The judge must determine that you are like mature and well-informed about the decision and that the abortion is in your best interest.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What you may want to do is when you call them and ask them about this stuff — otherwise, what you can do is — do you live near here? Could you maybe walk? Could your boyfriend drive you here? Because we could give you like this little packet. We could just give you a packet. Oh, wait. Here. I have a phone number for the public defender’s office. Okay?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. I’ll give you first the public defender’s office. And their phone number is, 266-1210. And then for like other info you’ll probably have to call the Children’s Court Center. This will be the second number that you’ll probably have to call. 257-7736.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Now if you want, we do have a little bit of a packet if you want to stop in and get that. Otherwise, if you call those phone numbers they’ll probably be able to really help you out about what you need to do.

CALLER: Do you know if the judge ever says no?

CLINIC: Most of the time the judge does not say no. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a time where a judge says no.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Come here for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah. I’m just really scared because like my period — I haven’t had my period since like December 14.

CLINIC: Are you — okay. Have you already taken a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You have not taken — okay.

CALLER: I didn’t know if those are right.

CLINIC: Those are actually fairly accurate. You could probably go to Walgreen’s and get one for like $15. You’re more than welcome to come here, although there is a charge –

CALLER: I would rather do that.

CLINIC: You can. Okay. There is a charge for a pregnancy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: He said he would pay. Okay, because the pregnancy tests here — it’s right around $35, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. So do you want to make an appointment then?

CALLER: Well, I guess.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on.

CALLER: I don’t know — but my boyfriend and I talked about it, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to say anything?

CLINIC: Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out like that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, you can get birth control here. There’s also a cost to get annual exam and to get on the pill, but did you say — would your boyfriend be willing to pay for that too?

CALLER: Yeah. Yeah. We just don’t want to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Okay. The charge for the exam because you’re under 18 there is a discount. It’s going to be around $75 or so. Pills for you are $12.25 a month.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Again, everything here is confidential. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, he actually has a job. Would it cost anymore then if he was paying for it?

CLINIC: Oh, no, no. Because you’re under 18. It’s just a certain charge because when you’re under 18 there’s a discount.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want — you want to make an appointment first for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on one moment. (pause) Can you come in at 12:15?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call my boyfriend, but I think he could take me at his lunch break then. So.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t — all right. Do you want to give me — how about if I just get your first and last name?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you’re sure — like my boyfriend and I don’t want us to — don’t want anyone to know about us. And you’re sure that you guys wouldn’t say anything?

CLINIC: Everything here is confidential, ma’am.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t I get your first and last name, and then if he can’t give us a call back, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we can set up an appointment for you on Monday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, so what’s your first name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay, and your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Smith. And date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: 3/19/88. Okay. Well, why don’t you give him a calla nd see if he can give you a ride, and if he can’t just give us a call back and we’ll set up an appointment for you on Monday. Okay?

CALLER: All right. So what time do I need to be there, like 12:15?

CLINIC: 12:15.

CALLER: All right. Well, so should I call you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Amber.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Northwest.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Oh, I can give you that number to our abortion clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 276-8777.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just scared because like I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that since I’ll be like in 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he — is he old enough to take care of all that and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. He might be. I’m not sure. Hold on a second.

All right. Okay, he wouldn’t be able to take care of that or sign for you because he’s not a legal parent, guardian or relative. So what’s going to have to happen is, only thing you can do is go through a judicial bypass –

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: You will have to come in, take a pregnancy test. After we run the test and see it’s positive we’ll have a list of questions that we have to ask you, and we have to go over our options. Three options — which is, you know, we have to let you know you do have the choice to keep it if you would like. There is also abortion. There is the option of, you know, having the baby and putting it up for adoption. But you will have to go through — we will have to give you the counseling. It’s basically counseling, give you your three options, and then go over some questions with you. You would, after that you would have to go see a public defender or a lawyer for the state.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: We’re not really sure. They probably don’t, but we’re not sure about that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You will go through a judicial bypass. You will speak to a public defender or a lawyer for the state, and he will go before a judge with you and let you know, let the judge know that you want to go for an abortion without your parents’ consent. You have to go through a couple of things before you can have that done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge ever say no?

CLINIC: Well, it all depends. Sometimes the judge will say no if he doesn’t think that, you know, doesn’t think there’s a big threat that your parents knowing will cause a problem. If it’s really going to be a problem that your parents know that you want to have this done and that you are pregnant, then he’ll okay it, and the judge will sign the papers and you can go to the abortion clinic and get it done because the judge signed and said it’s okay for you to get it done.

CALLER: Okay, well, does the judge have to tell anybody about it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Everything stays confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Would you be able to come in on Monday?

CALLER: I think so. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but — because he’d be the only way I could get there. Would that be all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yes, that’s fine. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. So I could come in for a pregnancy test and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was there?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and him talked about it, and we don’t want anybody to know about us. So.

CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, if the — like is it possible that the pregnancy test could be that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Did you take a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, it’s a possibility that you can be.

CALLER: Oh, well, if I wasn’t pregnant could I be on birth control then?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: I understand, so if your test comes back negative we can always put you on birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Everything is confidential. We don’t tell anyone. It’s on you if you want to tell somebody, but Planned Parenthood, everything is confidential with Planned Parenthood. We don’t release any information to anyone. We won’t even be able to release information to your boyfriend if he asked.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the problem is, well, could he come and pick them up because I’m not old enough to drive. He’d be the only one that could get them.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. He can always come pick them up. All you have to do is write a note. We can put the note in your chart.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really scared and I don’t know, but would it be all right if I called and talked to you if I thought of anything else? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Latoya.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Racine. This Jenny. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you have a number for anyplace that does?

CLINIC: 1-800-472-2703.

CALLER: Okay. Where is that exactly?

CLINIC: That is Milwaukee.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I’m just really worried because my friend said that since — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You would want to come in and talk to someone about that. Where are you from?

CALLER: I live in Union Grove.

CLINIC: You would have to come to the Racine one and talk to someone about it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I come there and ask you guys questions?

CLINIC: Yeah. And then they can give you a list of places also.

CALLER: Well, could I come and get a pregnancy test? I’m just really worried because I haven’t had my period since December 14th, and I don’t know what to do. I’m just scared.

CLINIC: You would need to come in and get a pregnancy test and get all checked out, okay? And then someone would talk to you about it.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody I was there —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would just really feel a lot better if my boyfriend was there with me. Would that be all right too?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Would you have to have him sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: He just doesn’t want anyone to know about us.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Well, if it said that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: I just don’t want to have to worry about all this again.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, we don’t have to tell anybody anything. It’s all confidential. We don’t tell anyone anything. We can’t release any of the information unless you sign a consent for us to release it to someone.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Since I don’t drive or anything, is it all right if my boyfriend comes to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: You would have to sign a consent here with you. But you need to find out if you’re pregnant or not first.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: We’ve got to take it one step at a time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you need to come in and get that all checked out, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: But do you guys have to tell my parents about anything at all?

CLINIC: Okay. Listen. We’re not going to tell anybody anything. It’s all confidential.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Don’t be worried. It’s all confidential, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Nobody will know anything. Your file is kept here, and nothing is released unless you sign a consent form to release it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: I’m just so confused. I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay. You need to come here and get checked out.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: You name was Jenny?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
