TAPE – 469

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, ma’am, we don’t. I can give you a number.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: 428-6242.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if, um, like I’m just really worried because like, well, I’ll be 14 in March. And my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. You can call and ask them.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Okay. You can come on Wednesday. We’re closed already.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: I’m just really worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, so I don’t know what to do, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Right. Well, do you want to try calling them? I think they do — what is your name, ma’am?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Smith?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Christine Smith. Can you come in — do you want to come in on Wednesday morning?

CALLER: Well, what time?

CLINIC: At 8:00.

CALLER: Yeah, I guess. I don’t know. I would have to call my boyfriend to see, but I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in then if you want to. If it’s positive, you wanted to have an abortion?

CALLER: Um, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, maybe you can call that office and see if they can see you tomorrow and make other arrangements if you want it done right away.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just —

CLINIC: If not, we can see you here Wednesday morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, me and my boyfriend were just talking about this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us but —

CLINIC: Everything is confidential here, ma’am.

CALLER: All right. So you guys wouldn’t have to ask anything about him or anything?

CLINIC: Anything about him?

CALLER: Right. Like we just don’t want anyone to know about us, and — but he was going to pay for everything. So does he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think that he would. I don’t know if the age problem would be a problem, ma’am.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: He’s more than three years older than you.

CALLER: Yeah? Well, is that bad?

CLINIC: Well, I think by law it’s like statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Statutory rape does not mean that you were forced. It just means that you’re sex with a minor.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: Without parental consent. I don’t know the law very well, so I don’t know what could happen there. But I know that these people would be able to give you more information on that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so what should I do then? Just — I mean, I don’t know what to do. I’m scared.

CLINIC: Right. Do you want to have a baby?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: (sighs) Well, I know you would need parental consent to get an abortion. Your boyfriend would not be good enough. You need —

CALLER: Oh, but I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: The legally I don’t think they’ll do an abortion, ma’am. Like I’m telling you, they would be able to give you more information. They are the ones that perform it.

CALLER: Oh. But if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am. We can help you. You don’t need parental consent for that.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: But if you’re not pregnant, ma’am, you need to make sure you go get on some condoms or something to be using.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Just because you’re not pregnant right now doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would it be all right — like I can’t drive yet. But my, would it be all right if my boyfriend picked up like the birth control though?

CLINIC: The birth control pills? No. You have to come in for an exam.

CALLER: Oh. Well, after that? Could he pick up like the pills or whatever?

CLINIC: I’m sure when you come in we can make some kind of arrangements.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, ma’am.

CALLER: You’ve been so helpful. Thanks. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Eliza. If you want to, ma’am, you can come here Wednesday morning.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And we can go ahead and take care of the pregnancy test, or like I said you can call that number. I know an abortion’s going to cost you a pretty penny, and —

CALLER: Okay. How much?

CLINIC: I’m thinking about $350 and up.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You can call that number. They know more about all the legal procedures.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And I think there might be a way for you to go around telling your parents but you would have to go through a judge.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: So — yes.

CALLER: Do I need a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think you do.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Like I said, they would be able to give you more information on that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But feel free to come on by or send him to get some condoms for you on Wednesday if you don’t come in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So could he just come in and get —

CLINIC: Yeah, he can come in. It’s going to cost him $2 a dozen.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. You’re welcome, ma’am.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.
