CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Regina speaking. Can you please hold?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: I’m sorry? No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could i ask somebody some questions then?

CLINIC: Are you a patient here?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No, then I cannot transfer you through.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know — could I ask you real quick? I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. As far as abortions, we don’t do abortions here. I really — if you need anything about abortions I can give you a number that you can call.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what is that?

CLINIC: The number is 544-2769.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like, well my friend said that since like I’m going to be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’m not sure, ma’am.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. Well, do you know if I could come in there for like a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yeah. But you will have to go and set up an appointment for that. We don’t go by walk-ins.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what time do you guys do appointments?

CLINIC: It just depends on when you would like to come in. Hold on, okay?

CALLER: All right. (long pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. How may I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if I could come in for a pregnancy test and —

CLINIC: When would you like to come in?

CALLER: Tomorrow, I think. What time do you have tomorrow?

CLINIC: What time I have? 8:30 tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but he’d be the only one that could bring me. Would that be all right if he was there with me?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know about us or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-um.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: You will have to have an exam done here first.

CALLER: Well, could I get that scheduled tomorrow?

CLINIC: How about 8:40? Is that fine?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can I have your name?

CALLER: If I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody though?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. May I have your name, please?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Date of birth?

CALLER: March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: And day time phone number that we can contact you to confirm an appointment?

CALLER: Well –

CLINIC: Or we just go ahead and confirm it. What you need to do is go ahead and just bring in at least $10 with you. Okay? Also, we ask 24 hours prior to appointment do not have any sexual intercourse, no vaginal creams, no douching, and you cannot be on your period.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So then we’ll see you tomorrow at 8:40.

CALLER: But would you have to tell my parents at all about anything?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: Would you have to tell my parents —

CLINIC: No. Everything that we do here is confidential.

CALLER: Everything?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Thank you. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood East. This is Natalie. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was talking to Lupe, but the phone got disconnected. So —

CLINIC: Oh, okay. I’m sorry. And your name, ma’am?

CALLER: It’s — well, she just put me on hold.

CLINIC: Okay. Can I have your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Just a moment. (long pause)

Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: I know you’re holding for Lupe. She’s on another call right now. Is there anything I can help you with?

CALLER: Well, yeah. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Natalie.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Yeah. Well, I was just actually wanting to ask some questions, but like I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, sweetie, we don’t. But I can give you the number where we refer our patients.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s for Women’s Reproductive Services, and let me get that number for you. Just a moment. Just a second.

CALLER: Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Ummm — that’s a really touchy situation because of his age.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because that’s probably considered statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. I can just give you the number, ma’am. I really can’t give you any other information.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: It’s 544-2861.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? I really wouldn’t know how to advise you on that.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: All righty, hon?

CALLER: Well, do you know if I could come in there for like a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Uh, they do that there.

CALLER: Oh, well, it’s just my boyfriend told me to call you guys.

CLINIC: Well, if you’re considering termination of pregnancy I would go ahead and have everything done at one place so it’s not so much confusion.

CALLER: Well, I wasn’t really sure if I was pregnant actually. I’m just really scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st. And I’m worried.

CLINIC: I don’t blame you. You can come in.

CALLER: What time?

CLINIC: Well, do you have Medicaid?

CALLER: No. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold for a moment, please?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can you hold on for one second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thanks. (pause)

CALLER: (dialing sounds) (busy signal) (dialing sounds) (busy signal) (dialing sounds) (ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood East. This is Natalie. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was just on the phone with you, but my friend’s mom came in and I had to hang up.

CLINIC: Right. I came back to the line. Can I give you a number you can go? There’s a confidential place you can go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: For free pregnancy tests. Okay? It’s called the Sierra Teen Resource Center. Okay? And the number there is 755-8336. And it is free. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: I don’t know what their policies are, dear. Okay? But —

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t’ pregnant, could I come and get birth control?

CLINIC: Yes, you could.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Do you have — you don’t have Medicaid, right?

CALLER: Right. Yeah. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you go ahead and find out —

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Why don’t you go ahead and find out what’s going on? Okay? And then when you know call us back, and we can go ahead and talk to you and set up for an appointment.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody though?

CLINIC: There are laws that we have to follow regarding positive pregnancy tests or positive STDs in people under the age of 14. Okay? We have to abide by those laws.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: As far as telling your parents just if you come in? No, it is confidential. Okay? We do encourage you to talk to your parents. Your visit will be confidential. You know, we just have to follow the laws that we’re required to under the Texas statute. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right if my boyfriend came in with me though?

CLINIC: You know, regarding that, it’s fine if you want to bring somebody in. But you’re telling me that he’s 22 and you’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. And you know, there are certain things that we have to do. We would need to talk to you in person. Okay? If you can bring somebody else with you it would be better. If you are dead set on bringing him, that’s fine. You do understand though that in Texas being that you’re 13 years old and he’s 22, that is considered statutory rape. You do understand that, right?

CALLER: Well, I don’t — I guess. I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you find out what’s going on first? Call the number that I gave you, and when you know what’s going on why don’t you give us a call and we can maybe talk about that a little bit further?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC (male): Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. Desert Rainbow Center. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: I’m sorry, no we don’t. All I know is on the clinics we do pregnancy testing. Other than that, nothing to do with abortions.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. Do you know of any place that does do them?

CLINIC: I sure don’t, not right offhand.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just was wanting to ask some questions about it really. Do you — could I ask you real quick?

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold on? I’ll get you someone that might be able to help you. Hold on a second.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC (female): This is Gail.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering about — I had a few questions about getting an abortion, and I was wanting to talk to someone.

CLINIC: Okay. All I can do is give you a phone number. We don’t do that here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me put you on hold. Let me find the number for you, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: It’s 544-2769.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — well, I’m just worried because like my friend — like I’m going to be 14 in March. And she told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just tell them?

CLINIC: You know what? I hate to tell you this, but, yeah, they have to tell your parents, and your boyfriend can get into a lot of trouble.

CALLER: For what? What do you mean?

CLINIC: You know, you’re 14 and he’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. Do your parents, do they know you’re having sex?

CALLER: Well, no, that’s why they can’t tell them. They can’t find out at all. I mean, if they found out I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: Well, that’s the only thing. In the state of Texas you have to have your parents permission to get an abortion.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to tell them?

CLINIC: You’re going to have to go up to a judge.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: And you’re going to probably have to persuade him.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t know because we don’t do abortions. I can’t tell you. But if you want, call that number. They should be able to help you.

CALLER: Well, I was really just wanting to get like a pregnancy test. Could I do that there?

CLINIC: Okay, no. All we do here is HIV and AIDS testing and presentations. But they can help you at that same place that I give you the number at. They can help you with that also. They also do the pap smears and they do birth control also.

CALLER: Well, the guy that I talked to before said that you guys do pregnancy tests.

CLINIC: Not here. Not where we’re at. He’s a volunteer. All we do is HIV and AIDS testing here. He’s probably referring to the clinic. That’s probably what he was talking about. Yeah, clinics do the pregnancy test, but we don’t do them here in this building.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah, we do HIV testing, presentations, things like that.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? Once you get this taken care of, it’s really important, you might want to consider birth control.

CALLER: Well, would you guys be able to do that there?

CLINIC: No. You have to go to our clinics. All we do is HIV, presentations and things like that.

CALLER: Well, do you know if anybody would have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: I’m sorry? Oh, no, no. That part, no.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No. That part you wouldn’t have to tell your parents, but for the abortion you do have to go to your parents. Call them, calla the number I gave you. See what they tell you because they may be able to give you some more information. But like I said, since we don’t do it we don’t have that information. I don’t know what the procedure is. But, yeah, according to the law you would have to tell your parents if you do want to get an abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, you’ve been a lot of help thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Gail.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not here personally at the Planned Parenthood. No, we don’t. All we do is refer out.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that does then?

CLINIC: In the city, in El Paso?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. There’s a place called Reproductive Services. Yeah, in Yandel.

CALLER: Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: I can look it up. Just a moment, please.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’m sorry to keep you waiting. I was on the other side of the desk and now I can’t put my hands on it. Just hang on. It’s here. I had my rolladex. It’s on Yandel in the downtown area. It’s Reproductive Services. Now hang on. All the little cards are sticking together. This isn’t working. What part of the city are you in?

CALLER: I’m just like by the freeway. By Ft. Bliss.

CLINIC: Ft. Bliss, okay. Then that’s not too far to go over. Well, for goodness sake. Can you believe, it would be faster pulling out the phone book. Here we go. 544-2865.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right, thanks.

CALLER: Could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just really worried about all this.

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You know, that’s a question that I really can’t answer you, and I’d hate to give you some bad advice. I really don’t know because of your age. What you’re going to have to do is call them and ask them what’s going on with the laws with that now to make sure, you know, to see what you can do. Because it’s tricky because you are 14. You are even — if you were 18 it would be no problem, but you’re 14. Even though he’s 22, it has nothing to do with your age. That’s the problem. But call them. You know, there’s no way they can tell who you are over the phone. It’s just like you’re talking to me now. I don’t know who you are. So just call them and ask them your questions.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come there to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: From our clinic? Sure. Sure you can.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Yeah, there’s one on the five points that I can give you the telephone number. They can give you a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: The sooner you know the better. Then you have more time to make up your mind what you’re going to do. Okay? It’s never good to wait.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Even if they say you’re still too early, that’s better to hear that then you’ve waited too long. So let me see. The clinic at the five points, which is our main one is 566-6707. Call them and just say you’d like a pregnancy test, what do you need to do? If you need financial help, tell them that too.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so I couldn’t come there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. This is the offices. This is the administration office.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Where we do — you know, we take care of all the clinics’ paperwork. But, no, we don’t —

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell anybody that I was there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No, and there’s no way by law that they — no. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know? I don’t know what name you’re going to give them, so. You know, they wouldn’t know.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: They shouldn’t ask for a check. I wouldn’t think so.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there do you think?

CLINIC: Sure can. Oh, yeah. That’s one of the things we believe in, so sure. Yeah.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. There’s nobody they have to notify. Like your family doctor, you mean, or something, or your parents?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Again, being that you’re 14, I don’t know exactly what the clinics do on that, but I would think not. But, you know, don’t quote me on that because I don’t know. But call and ask, just like you’re asking me. It doesn’t’ hurt to ask. Okay? And if they don’t put you on the pill, if they can’t for some reason or another, then you need to do your homework. Then call us back and ask for the Education Department, and they’ll explain all of the birth control that’s out there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So if you can’t do one then you at least can do something else. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Good luck.

CALLER: Thanks. You’ve been really nice. What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Andrea.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Take care of yourself.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
