CLINIC: Sioux Falls Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?
CALLER: I can barely hear you. Can you talk a little louder?
CLINIC: Sioux Falls Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?
CALLER: Yeah. Ho. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: How much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: 447 for under 12 weeks.
CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?
CLINIC: By your last menstrual period.
CALLER: Okay. Well, that was January 15th.
CLINIC: (Pause) You’re about eight weeks right now.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We’re booking into the first week in April though. Keep that in mind.
CALLER: Okay. Well, what does that mean?
CLINIC: That means you’ll be plus three weeks, so you’d be about 10-11 weeks by the time we could get you in.
CALLER: Okay. So would that be enough time?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m really worried. My boyfriend said that he would pay cash for everything. But the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. By South Dakota law, one of your parents need to be notified unless you get a judicial bypass.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: If you get a judicial bypass.
CALLER: Well, what is that?
CLINIC: You need to make an appointment to come into the clinic and get some counseling about the judicial bypass; then you need to make an appointment with the court to meet with a judge. And he or she needs to find you mature enough to make this decision on your own without parental notification.
CALLER: How much does that cost?
CLINIC: I don’t think it cost anything.
CALLER: Oh. Well, does the judge usually say it’s all right?
CLINIC: It depends.
CALLER: Okay. Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for it all, would he have to sign anything or have his name on any forms?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: So would I be able to come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure beforehand, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: If you want to come in for a pregnancy test, you can, but if you’ve already taken one and it’s positive, then you’re pregnant.
CALLER: Well, I haven’t taken one.
CLINIC: Okay. Then you need to take a pregnancy test before you do anything.
CALLER: So I could come in there for that?
CLINIC: You can. It cost $15 here. It may be easier for you just to take one at home.
CALLER: Well, I would rather come there and make sure that it was done right.
CLINIC: Okay. It’s a urine sample, just to let you know that’s the same as you would get at a pharmacy, just to let you know that.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: Only if you get an annual exam done here.
CALLER: How much does that cost?
CLINIC: It can cost anywhere between 75 to $100.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through all this again, so we were wanting to get birth control.
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: You can call and talk to anyone up here in the front. Anyone can answer your questions.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Is that all?
CALLER: Yeah, I think so.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Okay. Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.
