(dialing sound) (ringing 3X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Gail.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not at this Planned Parenthood. The one in Cincinnati does and Woman’s Med does.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want the Woman’s Med in Dayton?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. That number is 293-3917.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know — like my friend told me that like since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents, but is it okay — like my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: Well, if he’s 22, in that situation they may want to arrest him. How old are you? 14?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March, but you have to arrest him?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Simply because that’s a law. That’s statutory rape.

CALLER: What could happen to him? Like – we’re in love. He can’t be arrested.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I’m just letting you know if you took him, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now do you have an aunt?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Or someone who’s 18 — or 21. That’s the age.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: Yeah. I understand that. But you’re just 14, sweetheart, okay?

CALLER: But he can’t take care of that?

CLINIC: No. Well, he wouldn’t be the ideal person. It has to be a relative.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Now do you know anyone that’s a relative that you can tell?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you’re going to have to stand in front of the court before you can have that abortion also to get permission granted, and you have to speak in front of a judge and let him know that, you know, the reason why you don’t think you’re ready for this child or you know —

CALLER: Well, does the court have to know about him?

CLINIC: That’s if you tell them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But yet and still, you need a relative. That’s the point that you’re missing.

CALLER: But they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, there is a way they can find out.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: He has to be a relative — an uncle or aunt.

CALLER: But I don’t have anybody. It’s just me and my parents.

CLINIC: You have grandparents?

CALLER: No. Well, how do I go to the court? What do I do?

CLINIC: You have to stand in front of a judge in order to grant you an abortion. Okay?

CALLER: Well, how would I get there?

CLINIC: You go downtown. Downtown at the court building for juvenile, okay? And you will speak to a judge there.

CALLER: Do I need a lawyer or anything?

CLINIC: Need a what, sweetie?

CALLER: A lawyer?

CLINIC: No. Well, they’re appoint you someone, you know, if you cannot pay. It’s always a person there that can represent you, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: Now is there any way you can get here so I can give you information on that?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Or can I mail it to you? Or what do you want me to do?

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend to see when he could take me, but I don’t have any other way to get there besides. But is it all right if he brings me?

CLINIC: It’s who?

CALLER: My boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yeah, he can pick up that pamphlet. I will give it to you. I want you to read over it. And both of you, so you’ll understand where you stand at, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. So if he can come up and pick it up, I’ll have that ready for him.

CALLER: But you’re sure you don’t have to tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: No. Well, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. I can just give it to him, and he can go ahead and you guys can follow what the pamphlet says. But like I said, you are going to need a relative or someone 21, okay? It states that. So you read over it and get an understanding. If you have any more questions, feel free to call me back.

CALLER: Okay. Well I was actually wondering like if you guys do the pregnancy tests there.

CLINIC: Yeah. We do the pregnancy tests. I can do a pregnancy test, but it will run you $12.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you missed several periods, or —

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Yeah. You would need a pregnancy test. Your periods used to come regular each month?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you’re going to need a pregnancy test so —

CALLER: Would it be all right if he brought me for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine, sweetie.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: If the pregnancy test was negative do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do have birth control.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to — yeah. Because we just don’t want to go through all this again.

CLINIC: I understand. We can set you up an appointment after we get the results from the pregnancy test, and if it’s negative you can be seen here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We do a complete examination on you with your pap smear and so forth, and then we’ll let you know when your periods do start that you should start taking your birth control pills the Sunday following your menses. Okay? We will explain everything to you.

CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Well, the thing is, okay, he’s 22. If he brings you up here — I am going to talk to you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And help you out as much as I can in this situation. Now if you are pregnant then that’s a different story, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So let’s start with the pregnancy test first, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? What is your name, so I can look forward? Just your first name.

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine? Okay. Christine, can you make it here this morning?

CALLER: No. I’d have to — he’s at work today, so.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. When can you make it? Can you make it some time this week?

CALLER: I think so.

CLINIC: If you’re in school I can give you a slip that stated that —

CALLER: I’m homeschooled, so.

CLINIC: Oh, you’re homeschooled? Okay. Well, if you can make it here sometime this week, Christine, we can see you and do the, start with the pregnancy test.

CALLER: But you’re sure you won’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Well, at this time I would not tell anybody, at this time, Christine.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Now you have to look at the situation if it is positive. Okay?

CALLER: Well, so you’d have to tell someone if it was positive?

CLINIC: Well, there’s a guideline that any, you know, teenager with him being 22 years old that’s a big age difference, Christine.

CALLER: Yeah, but we’re in love. I don’t —

CLINIC: I understand that you’re in love, but the thing is, that is like statutory rape, okay? And if you were my daughter I wouldn’t want you to be dating a boyfriend that that’s old. You know? That’s too old, sweetie, okay? So I’m going to talk to you. All I want you to do is come in this week and let’s get that pregnancy test taken, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? My name is Gail, so you can call here and let me know when you’re going to come in and do the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then we’ll go from then on.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Okay, Christine?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Oh, you’re so welcome. Have a good day.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
