CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is April.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that might?

CLINIC: You need to look in the phone book. You can probably look under “abortions,” and there’s listings in Columbus.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys like do the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We can do that.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: No. But if you are pregnant and to have an abortion you do have to let your parents know.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Like my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do whatever they have to do?

CLINIC: No. No. You’re under age. You have to have your parents’ consent for an abortion.

CALLER: There’s just no way they can find out though. Like I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Honey, you have to let them know if you’re going to have an abortion. They have to have — I mean, they have their consent in order to do that procedure for you.

CALLER: Well, my friend said something about getting like a lawyer or something. Could I do that?

CLINIC: You could file for an emancipated minor.

CALLER: Yeah? What does that involve?

CLINIC: You’d probably have to talk to an attorney.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do I have to — how do I pay for that?

CLINIC: With — honey, I don’t know how that works with you being underage. I’m really not sure. I would just contact an attorney’s office and ask a few general questions about it and then go from there.

CALLER: Would they have to — so like, well could I come in there and get a pregnancy test to see?

CLINIC: Yeah. You’re only 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And he’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: That, under Ohio law, is a statutory rape.

CALLER: What is that? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: He could get in a bunch of trouble because you’re way underage and —

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: But that doesn’t matter. Your ages is too far apart. H’s 22 and you’re 13.

CALLER: What could happen to him?

CLINIC: He could possibly go to jail.

CALLER: Well, he could go to jail? Like, well, who’s going to find out or anything? Like —

CLINIC: If you’re going to a lawyer and see about getting an abortion, the lawyer’s going to know for one.

CALLER: Oh, and he would have to send him to jail?

CLINIC: Well, they would end up being charges pressed.

CALLER: Well, what could I do? Like would it be better just not to say anything about him?

CLINIC: Why don’t you come in and take the pregnancy test, and then you’re going to have to end up talking to your parents.

CALLER: But he’s going to — I can’t tell my parents, and he’s the only way that I could get there.

CLINIC: He can bring you in.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to say anything about him?

CLINIC: No. We won’t say anything. But I mean, you’re going to end up having to tell your parents. Go ahead and come in and do the pregnancy test, and we’ll talk to you from there. Okay?

CALLER: Well, what if I wasn’t pregnant? Do you guys like —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: You wouldn’t have to say anything to anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: And would you have to have tell anybody that I was on birth control or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So yo wouldn’t have to say anything about my boyfriend if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have to get here before noon to do the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Is there any other day? Like my boyfriend’s at work.

CLINIC: Unless you can come to Athens.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’re open Monday through Friday in Athens. You can come there any time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: I’ll talk to him and see. All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Come on in for the pregnancy test, and then we’ll work with you from there, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
