CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: Yes, I do.

CALLER: How much?

CLINIC: That would depend on the length of pregnancy of the patient.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how pregnant you are?

CLINIC: You don’t know how pregnant you are?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since January 15th, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: You haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. If you are pregnant, you would be about seven weeks. From 6 to 11 weeks, it’s $395.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I have another question, actually. I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 the 19th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You’re either going to have to have parental consent or judicial bypass. Your boyfriend is 22, and you’re 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: You’re 13.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Oh. You either have to have parental consent or a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What’s a judicial bypass?

CLINIC: That’s something you would have to get with the court, the Montgomery County court. And if you tell them your boyfriend is 22 and you are 13, they’re not going to give it to you.

CALLER: So I shouldn’t say?

CLINIC: I wouldn’t. Because, actually, he could get arrested on the spot.

CALLER: Oh. Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re 13 and he’s 22.

CALLER: So he could go to jail?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: But he can’t go to jail. I mean, he’s the only that’s ever there for me. He can’t — I don’t know what I’d do if he wasn’t there.

CLINIC: Those are your options. I’ve got somebody on the other line.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for the judicial bypass?

CLINIC: It doesn’t cost anything for judicial bypass. It’s completely free.

CALLER: So I could come in there for a pregnancy test, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: You just go ahead and take a home pregnancy test. They work just fine.

CALLER: So those are normally right?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Well, if I got the judge to bypass, would you have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Would I have to?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: No. This is a doctor’s office.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Would I be able to get birth control anywhere?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CALLER: Well, can I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Like, well, my friend said that my parents have to sign some stuff, but my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: Okay. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want your parents to know?

CALLER: Not at all.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, yours is different. What county do you live in?

CALLER: Well, I live in New Lebanon.

CLINIC: What county?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here.

CLINIC: Okay. You need to find out what county you live in so that you can call the juvenile court.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And what you need to do is request for a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: That means that the judge will okay you for a termination without your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Do I have to get a lawyer?

CLINIC: No. They’ll take care of it all for you. But you need to find out what county you live in. I can give you the numbers.

CALLER: Well, what if the judge says no?

CLINIC: I don’t — you’ll have to call there. It’s nothing to do with me. I mean, it’s out of our hands because of your age. You need to go through the court system.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would they ask about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t know. You’re going to have to call them and ask.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me just give you the information. It says “teens under the age of 18 years old must have parents’ permission before getting a termination in the state of Ohio unless a court has decided differently. That is called a judicial bypass. You may go to the court in the county where you live” — so it’s important that you find out what county you live in — “next to where you live or where the abortion will be performed. If you are considering a termination without telling your parents, a lawyer will be appointed to represent you in court at no cost to you.”

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But let me give you the number of the Montgomery County Juvenile Court. It’s 937-225-4141.

CALLER: And I just ask to talk about —

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me and is there with me?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. It’s $12 unless you have a medical card or proof of income.

CALLER: Well, what do you mean about the income?

CLINIC: You know, proof of income.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. So that would be $12.

CALLER: Okay.

CALLER: Well, like if my boyfriend pays for it?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CLINIC: We’d have to make you an appointment for a full pap, a pelvic and a breast exam. It wouldn’t be today. We’d just make you an appointment to come back.

CALLER: But you guys could do birth control there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: That’s correct.
