CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that might?

CLINIC: There are places from Youngstown on. We do have a listing of some different ones. If you’re wanting to stop in and pick up a listing, you’re more than welcome to. And they have the names, the addresses and the numbers on there.

CALLER: Okay. Could I ask you some questions?

CLINIC: Actually we don’t do anything like that, so I probably really can’t answer your question. What kind of question did you want to ask?

CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just say whatever they need, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You know what? I would have no idea. I don’t know. I really don’t know. You probably would need to either call those places and find out or whatever, but I would have no idea. Because we don’t deal with anything like that.

CALLER: Well, it’s just I’m scared. My last period was December 14th, and I don’t know what to do. I’m just worried.

CLINIC: Well —

CALLER: Could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, we can do a pregnancy test for you.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No, no. We can do that. That’s the only thing we can do. And then we can give you papers on — if that’s what you want to do, termination, or continue pregnancy or whatever, then we can do that.

Let me see. I don’t have anything today. Could you come in Monday morning?

CALLER: I think so. But would it be all right if both me and my boyfriend came in?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. He can come with you; that’s not a problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Could you come in like 9:00 Monday morning?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: What is your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: With a “C” or a “K”?

CALLER: A “Ch.”

CLINIC: And your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Okay. And you’ve never been here before; is that correct?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: What I would need for you to do, Christine, is I would need for you to collect your first morning urine. Put it in a clean, air-tight container and bring it with you. I don’t care what kind of container it is, just make sure it’s good and clean and it’s got a good-fitting lid on it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in for birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. If the test would become negative, what could we do is schedule you. We can’t do anything on Monday because we don’t have a nurse practitioner here on Mondays. But what we could do is get you in here, then we could set up an appointment for you.

CALLER: Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through this again.

CALLER: Right, right. Yeah. My suggestion would be that’s what you need to do.

CALLER: All right. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, no. Everything here is confidential whether you’re 15 or you’re 82. Everything here is confidential. So no. No one would know. We would not be calling your parents or anything of that nature.

CALLER: So let me call my boyfriend and see. Could I call you back? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name’s Beth. I penciled you in, and see if that will be okay. If it won’t, then you can call me back and see what else we can do for you, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye bye.
