CLINIC: Hello. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: We refer them out.

CALLER: Do you know the phone number for them?

CLINIC: Pardon me?

CALLER: Like who would I call for that?

CLINIC: Amy Cousins in Vestal.

CALLER: Bestel?

CLINIC: Yeah. Where are you calling from?

CALLER: I’m in Downsville.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s where we refer our patients.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I was just really wanting to go to see you guys because my friend told me to talk to you.

CLINIC: We don’t do abortions, but if you want to come see us — I don’t know what — you’re just going to skip a step. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: (Chuckle) Are you positive about this? Are you pregnant? How far along are you?

CALLER: Well, I did a pregnancy test, a home test, over the weekend, and it came out positive.

CLINIC: It did?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Maybe you should come and have a pregnancy test done. Get a confirmation. And then we’ll give you the stuff.

CALLER: Is it okay if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: But you have to make an appointment, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: How far along are you; do you know?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know for — my last period was the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. We better be hustling this along then, okay? All righty. Why don’t I make an appointment for you? When can you come?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off work.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Not at all?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: It’s just my parents can’t find out. My boyfriend, he’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married and everything, but my parents absolutely hate him because they think he’s too old for me. But they just can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Okay. As far as we’re concerned, no, they won’t find out.

CALLER: So nobody would tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah. But if you see somebody in here in the waiting room that you know — because this is a doctor’s office. We try to keep it discrete, but sometimes that happens. But I doubt that you’ll see anybody.

CALLER: Okay. All right. If it turns out that the pregnancy test that you guys do is negative, is there any way I could get birth control?

CLINIC: Probably — well, she might give you an emergency pack if it turns out negative.

CALLER: Do you guys have to tell anybody about that at all?

CLINIC: No. No, we don’t tell anybody. It’s like going to the doctor’s office. They aren’t suppose to tell either.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t tell anybody about my boyfriend either?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: If he has questions, is it okay if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Pat.

CALLER: Pat?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: All right, okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hmm. Bye.
