CLINIC: Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: You do? How much does that cost?

CLINIC: $400.

CALLER: $400?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Like well, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: First off you’d have to have a pregnancy test. Then you’d come for an exam, and then you’d come for the AB.

CALLER: Okay. But would my parents find out?

CLINIC: No, but you’d — why don’t — what did you want? Do you want to come in for a pregnancy test and then go from there?

CALLER: Well, I could. Like I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: We don’t go by home pregnancy tests.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my parents can’t find out at all because like if they found out — like well my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married, but like they just absolutely hate him because they think he’s too old for me. So they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Do you want to come in for the pregnancy test? How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in New Hartford.

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: It was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: The first week in December?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Just a minute. (pause) Can you come in Monday?

CALLER: I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see.

CLINIC: Well, why don’t you find out when your boyfriend could bring you, and you call me back, and then we’ll make you an appointment. You give me a timeframe.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: You could talk to whoever answers the phone. They can make you an appointment. Just tell them a timeframe and see if they can fit you in.

CALLER: Oh, so I can’t talk to you again, or —

CLINIC: No. You wouldn’t need to talk to me. Whoever answers the phone can make you an appointment.

CALLER: Oh, It’s just — well, I like, you’re nice.

CLINIC: Yeah. But anybody, but I’m here until 8:00, so if you can call back tonight.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Debbie.

CALLER: What was it?

CLINIC: Debbie.

CALLER: Debbie? All right.

CLINIC: But if you get a timeframe so — because we do have evenings on Mondays and Wednesdays.

CALLER: Okay. If like, say that I ended up not being pregnant or whatever —

CLINIC: Then they would set you up for a yearly exam for like an exam for you to get birth control.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No. Nope. It’s total confidentiality. You wouldn’t have to worry about your parents finding out at all.

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
