CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: No? Well, do you know who would?

CLINIC: Well, there are plenty of places that would, but first you need a pregnancy test in order to get going. How far along do you think you are?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: The first week in December. Hold on a second.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Did you want to come in for a pregnancy test first?

CALLER: Well, yeah, I guess. Is there like an age requirement for that?

CLINIC: No. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’re 14? You’re 13?

CALLER: I’ll be 14, yeah.

CLINIC: Are you covered under your parents’ insurance?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend was going to pay cash for it. He’s got a job. He’s 22, so he’ll take care of everything.

CLINIC: Can you come in at 1:00 this afternoon?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see.

CLINIC: Okay. Then you can call me back. What’s your name?

CALLER: My name is Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Christine Smith.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is there any way my parents would have to know this at all because —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — if they found out — they hate my boyfriend because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Well, actually, he is (chuckle). But that’s okay. Okay. So call me back.

CALLER: What do you mean he is?

CLINIC: No, that’s all right (chuckle).

CALLER: So you guys wouldn’t tell anybody or anything at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No, it’s confidential here.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, would you guys be able to do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. But we set you up at a later date to have that done, okay?

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: So when I talk to my boyfriend —

CLINIC: Just call me back.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: I don’t give it on the phone. Okay?

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.
