(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Judy speaking. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: In Ithaca they do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: What’s Ithaca’s telephone number? It’s 273-1513.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion but –

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever that is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You wouldn’t have to tell anybody because it’s confidentiality if you go to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I — like I’m just really scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 14, and I don’t know what to do. So could I come in there for like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Oh, absolutely. We could do that. Have you ever been to Planned Parenthood before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: All right. Let me get you into the computer. Hold on just a second, hon. (pause) What’s your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: (typing) First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: With a K or a C?

CALLER: C-H.

CLINIC: Phone number where we could reach you?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend wanted to use his cell phone number, but he just got it, and I don’t know what it is. Is it all right to call you back with that later?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. Sure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Your birthday?

CALLER: My birthday is March 19, 1988. Do you know if it’s all right if I use his address?

CLINIC: Oh, yes, as long as — you know it’s somewheres where we could get ahold of you, or whatever.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So let me see when we can get you in.

CALLER: Do you know like if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant that if you guys could do birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Well, we would have to set you up for an appointment so you could come in for an exam.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You have to have an exam first in order to get on birth control.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay? Can you come in Thursday, hon?

CALLER: I think so. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. He’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to set up an appointment? Now do you go to school during the day?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: You’re homeschooled. So do you want to set up the appointment, or you just want to get back to us on that?

CALLER: I guess I’ll just call you back after I talk to him.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Could I ask you real quick, like if I was on birth control would you guys have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about it, and we didn’t want anybody to really know about all this, so.

CLINIC: No, it’s very confidential here, hon. Whatever you do, you’re the patient, and we abide by what you want as far as contact and everything. Okay?

CALLER: Okay, so would it be all right if — like I would really prefer if he was there with me. Would that be okay with everything?

CLINIC: He could come and sit with you and stuff, but as far as when you come in for your exam if you come for birth control you know, providing this test is negative, there’s a lot of the time that we would just prefer to talk to you because there’s a lot of questions we would want to ask you and it’s a little easier one on one.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But it’s okay if he’s there?

CLINIC: Yeah, as long as he’s here. Yeah, in the waiting room he can wait for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, let me call him and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Mine’s Judy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Good morning. Rise (sp) Office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: That would be the clinic. They don’t open until 12:30 on Monday. Would you like that number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: 794-3704.

CALLER: Okay, thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

(phone clicks)

(dial sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Rise Office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I just called. I was actually wondering if I could ask somebody some questions.

CLINIC: They’re clinical questions?

CALLER: Just — well, I don’t know. I’m just scared, and I don’t know what to do, and I just wanted to ask somebody some questions.

CLINIC: Okay, I’ll try. I’m not sure that I can help you. There is no medical personnel up here. We’re the education department.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’m just really scared because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m just scared that I’m pregnant and I don’t know what to do. And my friend told me that since like I”m going to be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents. But I can’t tell my parents but my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just like sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You don’t have to tell your parents. You don’t need their permission.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No. When you come in to make an appointment with the clinic or whatever, we have a booklet on the rights of minors in the state of New York. They have the right to make their own healthcare choices.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you do not have to tell them, and the medical personnel in the clinic is bound by confidentiality to not report it either. You could arrange with them on how to communicate whether by phone or by mail or whatever, so that it’s kept confidential. But they’ll discuss all that with you. There’s, on Thursday — I don’t know if you want to wait that long– but on Thursday afternoon the clinic has a walk-in for teens.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But you could call them and say you might want to get in before that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about anything, like –

CLINIC: And they won’t. They don’t need to. Nobody from this end will tell anyone.

CALLER: Okay. So they wouldn’t have to ask questions about him or anything either?

CLINIC: About your boyfriend?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: I can’t answer that 100 percent. I imagine you need him making those decisions; if he wants to be involved he can.

CALLER: Yeah. I would just feel better if he was there with me.

CLINIC: Certainly. I don’t think there’s any questions he needs to ask, but he can certainly accompany you and sit with you in the waiting room. They don’t do that procedure here. But they will have you come in and do your health workup and whatever, and then they’ll give you the paperwork and you’ll have to go to one of our other clinics to have the procedure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like say that maybe I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Yep. Yep.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope. You have those rights to make all those decisions. Yep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, –

CLINIC: It’s in writing, so if anybody was to question you about that, the New York Civil Liberties Union publishes a booklet for minors and it explains all that stuff, that they do not have to get anyone’s permission.

CALLER: Okay. Well –

CLINIC: The only problem you might have is if you’re trying to use your health insurance.

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. So that might go back to the person who holds the policy which is probably your parents, and in that case it would be hard to keep it confidential. But if you’re going to pay by cash or money order or check or some other means — and they do sliding scale here. So if you’re a minor and you have no income or whatever, tell them all that stuff. And they’ll work with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But, yeah, confidentiality part is not an issue. No one at this end is ever going to disclose it to anyone. They are bound by New York state law to not. So, just so you know, feel comfortable with that.

CALLER: Well, thanks.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: I’m just really worried about everything.

CLINIC: Yeah, I’ll bet you are. Yeah. But don’t worry. They’ll take care of you, and, you know, they had people in your age bracket many times. So they’re used to it. They’re a nice bunch of girls down there. They’re all women.

CALLER: Oh, okay. You’ve been a lot of help. Thanks. What was your name?

CLINIC: Maggie. Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’m upstairs. We’re upstairs. We’re the Rape Crisis Center and the Health Education Department. The clinic is on the first floor. We’re at 14 Prince Street. I don’t know if you know where the old building was. We’re one building down. They moved one building over.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But call them at 12:30. That’s when they open, and they’re open until 7:00 tonight I think.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay. Good luck. Bye bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 3X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this location. No. We do pregnancy tests. We do the surgical workups. We do everything but the procedure. That is done in Schenectady.

CALLER: In Schenectady?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Do you have that number?

CLINIC: I do. It’s 374-5353.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like I’m just scared because like my friend told me that like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents, but my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: He’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: No. First of all, they’re wrong. There is a complete confidentiality. Nobody has to know. And if I were you, I wouldn’t tell anybody that you’re 14 and your boyfriend’s 22.

CALLER: How come?

CLINIC: Because he could be subject to criminal charges.

CALLER: What do you mean criminal? What would happen?

CLINIC: You’re underage. You’re a minor. And he’s not. He’s — that’s called — it’s called statutory rape.

CALLER: What do you mean? He’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love.

CLINIC: No, no. I am saying if somebody like in somebody, an older person, for instance your parents — if your parents were to ever find out, regardless of how consensual it is, they could have him arrested.

CALLER: He could go to jail?

CLINIC: Yeah. He is 8 years older than you. He is an adult. He is over the age of — he’s an adult and you are a minor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Anyone under 17 is a minor.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And also, you know, so have you missed a period?

CALLER: Yeah. I haven’t had one since like the third week in december, and that’s why I’m scared.

CLINIC: You need to make a phone call and make a decision quickly because there is a 16-week cutoff. After 16 weeks Planned Parenthood will not do the procedure.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And you’re there, because if you haven’t had a period since the third week in December then, you know, you’re there. You’re getting very, very close. And the procedures are booked three weeks in advance.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You could come in here for a pregnancy test, yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have any kind of health insurance?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he was going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay, well, he needs to bring about $45. If he’s coming with you for the test –

CALLER: Is that all right?

CLINIC: He needs — yeah. He can. He needs to bring about $45 with him to pay for the test.

CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about this and like you said we didn’t want anyone to know about us. Would they be asking a lot of questions?

CLINIC: Well, that’s why he doesn’t want anyone to know about you because he knows that –

CALLER: He said it was just because he didn’t want me to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Well, yeah. (laughs) Of course he said that. He can come with you. We certainly are not going to file. You know, this is something that only like a family member or any other adult that decides to do that — an auntie, a friend of the family, anybody — just so you know — that’s because of his age and your age. You guys are, you know, just so you know, okay? Don’t go blabbing to all your friends. So, yes, come in here today. Come in here.

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call and see if he can get the time off work, but if it turned out that I wasn’t’ pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. But how often have you not had a period for three or four months at a time?

CALLER: Well, not often. I mean, never.

CLINIC: Never, so what are the chances that you’re not pregnant?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: They’re pretty low.

CALLER: But if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though?

CLINIC: Yeah. Have you ever had a manual exam?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Ever been to a gynecologist?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: All right. So call him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Find out when he can bring you in and we’ll try to get an appointment made for a pregnancy test because you really have no time to waste. You really don’t. If this is what you think you’re going to do, then you have to get on the stick immediately; otherwise, you’re going to end up having to go to Long Island for the procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because 16 weeks is our cutoff, hon. All right? So call him, find out when he can get you in today, tomorrow sometime. Thursday we’re open until 7:00. But what I’d really need to do is have you come in on Thursday. Let me give you a time. All right? And you tell him and you know, don’t ask him, tell him that he needs to bring you here on Thursday at 1:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that we can get this thing going.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: You’ve been a lot of help. Thank you.

CLINIC: I hope so.

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Anna.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay? All right. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Uwanda (ph). Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Yeah? How much does it cost?

CLINIC: That’s something that you would have to come in, they would have to discuss with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But it all depends on what you’re making or any type of insurance you have.

CALLER: Well, if I don’t have any insurance — my boyfriend said he was going to pay for it all.

CLINIC: It could run anywhere from 300 to 375. But I can’t tell you that right now over the phone. That’s something you would have to come in for.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: I got one from the store over the weekend, and it said it was positive.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you would need one from a doctor.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to set up an appointment and come in for that, and then we start from there?

CALLER: I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see —

CLINIC: Okay. Just find out with him when it’s okay with you. Now, the computers are down. So if you want anything for next week, you’re going to have to call back tomorrow. But I may be able to set you up for something for Friday. If you do decide, call me today, before 7:30. All right?

CALLER: There’s not any age requirement for having an abortion, is there?

CLINIC: No, no, no.

CALLER: Because I’ll be 14 in March, and it’s still all right? Right?

CLINIC: Not that I know of, there’s no age requirement.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No. That’s something that’s all kept confidential.

CALLER: Because if my parents found out — they hate my boyfriend. They think he’s too old for me. He’s only 22, so I don’t understand the —

CLINIC: That’s something that you — that’s your own personal life, and I can understand. But you’ll come in, and here they’ll help you out the best they can. They’ll help you figure it out from here. Okay?

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No, no. Call back before 7:30 today if you decide, okay?

CALLER: All right. Do you guys do birth control too?

CLINIC: Yeah. We do everything.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So when I call back later today, is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: I’m the only one here.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Marlene speaking.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Can you hang on for one second?

CALLER: Sure.

CLINIC: Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hi. Are you a patient here?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: We currently have started doing a new service here, not here, but within our Planned Parenthood of Niagara County. However, it’s consists of internal referrals. So if you want to come in for a confirmatory pregnancy test, I can refer you to our clinic.

CALLER: What does that mean?

CLINIC: What does that mean?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That means that we would have to do a pregnancy test here and confirm that you are, in fact, pregnant. And then we could schedule you an appointment over at our other clinic.

CALLER: Is there any age limit for that or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March. And that’s still all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: My friend told me you guys have to tell my parents if I’m going to have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No, it’s not true.

CALLER: No? Because they can’t find out at all. My boyfriend’s 22, and we’re in love, and we’re going to get married. But they hate him because they think he’s too old for me. So there’s just no way they can find out.

CLINIC: Okay. So are you available Saturday morning to come in to our walk-in clinic for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah, maybe. I’d have to see if he can take me there.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ve got walk-ins from 9 to 11.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And nobody has to know?

CLINIC: No. You’d come in for the pregnancy test, and we would schedule you a different appointment for the abortion.

CALLER: What if I have to go there? Do they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? All right. Well, say that I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: When I talk to my boyfriend, is it all right if I call you back —

CLINIC: Sure, that’s fine.

CALLER: — and ask questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Chandra (sp).

CALLER: Chandra? All right. Okay. Thank you.

(Dialing, phone ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t perform them here, but our Beacon, Poughkeepsie office, and New Windsor and Goshen — Goshen and Windsor, they do the medical TOPs. But if you’re going to go to one of those offices, we have to do an exam here before you go to see them. And with the Poughkeepsie and Beacon, they do the termination with local anesthesia. You’re awake.

CALLER: Do you have to be a certain age for that? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Well, if you need a pregnancy test, we’ll do a pregnancy test here. You can walk in today between 1 and 4.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t do it today. I have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off work.

CLINIC: Okay. I was giving you the hours. If not, you come in tomorrow 8:30 to 11. And they’ll do a pregnancy test, they’ll go over your options, and then they’ll advise where you can go. And we’ll give you a list, and you can review, then you can decide where you would have transportation to get to. But here in the Newburg office, we don’t do the terminations, but we do advise you where you can go to have one done.

CALLER: Is it okay if he comes with me? I mean, he’s 22.

CLINIC: What do you mean? Come here to the office?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, he can come with you.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: Well, you do know about statutory rape, right?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Statutory rape?

CALLER: What’s that?

CLINIC: Statutory rape is because you’re 14 and he’s 22. Well, we’re like mandated reporters.

CALLER: Oh. What does that mean?

CLINIC: We’re mandated reporters, that we’re healthcare professionals. And if we see something that needs to be called into them, we would have to do that.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because it’s a law. You’re 14 and he’s 22. Even if you gave him permission to have sex — does your parents know your sexual involvement?

CALLER: No, they don’t know at all. They just don’t like him. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Yeah, you’re in love, you’re going to get married. But I’m just saying, if you were to come here — and even to any other healthcare facility or office — they’re mandated reporters.

Do they not like him because they know how old he is and you’re 14?

CALLER: Well, yeah. They think he’s too old, but we’re in love.

CLINIC: I’m just letting you know. But we are here for your services. And what I’m telling you, no matter what healthcare office you decide to go to, they’re going to discuss that with you.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: You’re pregnant, and you’re requesting to do a termination. I mean, you’re not going to continue with the pregnancy. You can’t prolong that, you understand? Because the longer you wait for a termination, the more difficult the procedure can be.

CALLER: Okay. And you don’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Well, when you come in, whoever’s going to talk to you, they would know.

CALLER: Why would they — why would they have to say anything?

CLINIC: We just want to make sure it’s consensual that you gave him permission. But then again, even though you might have given him permission, because of your age, it’s a law that we are mandated to make a report. And they will just look into it. He might get arrested; he may not get arrested. They want to know where your parents — that you’re this age, and you’re having sex with a 22-year-old.

CALLER: Get arrested? I mean — but we’re in love. I don’t understand. He’s going to take care of me.

CLINIC: What don’t you understand about it? I’m just letting you know it’s a law. And when there’s laws involved, we just have to follow the laws.

CALLER: Is there any way around that? I can’t — nobody can know.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on for a moment.

RECORDING: — is located at 91 Dubois Street, across from the hospital. We are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. We accept Medicaid, MVP, GHI, GHI-HMO, and many other insurance plans. Thank you for holding. We’ll be with you momentarily.

If you need an exam, we have walk-in clinics Monday through Thursday, starting at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Fridays at 1 p.m. You don’t need an appointment. Just come in.

(Spanish recording)

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I just spoke to the nurse practitioner. It’s really your decision where you’re going to go to be seen regarding to have your pregnancy test, and they can do a counseling visit regarding the termination. But I’m must letting you know that if you come here, if you go to any other health facility, if they are aware of your age and your partner’s age, I’m just letting you know what can happen.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: The statutory rape that I discussed with you. They’re mandated reporters, so they would have to make a phone call.

CALLER: So if I told them about my boyfriend, they would have to call?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: What if I didn’t say anything?

CLINIC: I’m not — that’s your decision. I’m just letting you know, no matter where you go, if they’re aware of his age and yours, and you’re pregnant — that’s your decision if you’re going to terminate. But due to his age, and your parents are not aware, that’s a law. He can get arrested. A phone call can be made into the mandated hotline number.

CALLER: Is it okay if I can call you back real quick?

CLINIC: Sure you can. We’re here until 4.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Marabelle (ph).

CALLER: All right. Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Hi. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, not here. But I can give you the number where they do them. We can run your pregnancy test and give you some counseling if you need that.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if they would have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. The problem is, they can’t tell my parents at all because my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re going to get married, but my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Do you want to come in for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah, I guess.

CLINIC: Hold on one second. Can you hold on?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

Good news for Medicaid participants —

CLINIC: Okay, hi.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: All right. So you want to come in for your pregnancy test, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second.

CALLER: There’s not like an age requirement for that or anything, is there?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: You don’t have to be a specific age to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because I’ll be 14 in March. And that’s still all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine. A pregnancy test, we don’t need your parents’ permission. You don’t need your parents’ permission, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys need to tell my parents anything at all?

CLINIC: No, absolutely not. A woman has the right to consent to your own care, women’s care. So the only reason they would have to get your parents involved would be if you were going to have medication, like a life-threatening thing or anything like that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So it’s all right if my boyfriend brings me and everything.

CLINIC: That’s fine. We’re not going to say anything. It’s totally confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: When did you want to come in, first of all?

CALLER: Well, I would have to see when he can get off work and come and take me.

CLINIC: So then you’re going to call me back? Is that what you want to do?

CLINIC: For a pregnancy test, you can just come in — you can pretty much come in at any time. We’re open until 8:30. We do prefer that you call so we can put you into the book so that you have a time slot. Let’s say you don’t have an appointment and it’s packed in here, all those people are going to go before you. If you have an appointment, you have a scheduled time. You understand what I’m trying to say?

CALLER: Yeah. Say I ended up not being pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Of course. Absolutely.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No. You consent to your own women’s health care. You don’t have to be of age to consent for your own care, for women’s health that is.

CALLER: Okay. So no one has to know anything about anything?

CLINIC: Absolutely not.

CALLER: And it’s all right if my boyfriend comes in with me and everything?

CLINIC: He can come in. That’s fine. That’s fine. You need somebody to bring you, right?

CALLER: Yeah. And no one will say anything about that or anything?

CLINIC: We’re not going to say anything. That’s totally — you don’t even have to say that he’s your boyfriend. They don’t ask who’s coming in with you. That’s none of our business.

CALLER: All right, okay.

CLINIC: We’re here to take care of you and provide services to you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Do you want to call me back?

CALLER: Yeah. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Joanne.

CALLER: Joanne? All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my parents can’t find out at all, because my boyfriend’s 22. We’re in love, and we’re going to get married. But my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me. So they can’t find out or anything.

CLINIC: That I can’t help you with. I don’t know how they run their services. So you would have to ask them. I couldn’t even tell you.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not here.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I’m pretty sure. I think so. I took a pregnancy test over the weekend, and it was positive.

CLINIC: Well, you can come here and have a pregnancy test, and we can send you somewhere, either one of our offices or wherever.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter how old you are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter at all.

Let’s see —

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: Not at all.

CALLER: Okay. My problem is I can’t tell my parents because my boyfriend’s 22. Well, he’s going to take care of anything, but they just really don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. And there’s just no way they can find out we’re having sex.

CLINIC: We don’t tell anything to anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can you come in next Wednesday? Would that be too much of a wait?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend and see if he can get the time off of work.

CLINIC: Do you want me to give you an appointment, and then he can take the time off? Do you want to do that?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call him and see.

CLINIC: Well, why don’t you schedule it. And then if you can’t make it, just give us a call back and cancel it. That way you’ll have a spot at least in the book.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you think it would be easier for him to take off in the morning or in the afternoon?

CALLER: The afternoon.

CLINIC: How about we do like a 2:45?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you ever been here before or no?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What is your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine Smith.

CLINIC: How do you spell your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Oh, Smith? I’m sorry.

CALLER: That’s all right.

CLINIC: And a phone number where we can reach you?

CALLER: I’d have to give you my boyfriend’s number, but I’d have to —

CLINIC: Talk to him first?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to put down no phone. And then just give us a call to see if that’s okay. And then that morning you also want to give us a call just to confirm, make sure the appointment’s still here, and that we’re open and all of that, since I can’t call you.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay, Christine?

CALLER: Well, if it turns out that I’m not pregnant, could you guys do birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, actually, this appointment is for a pregnancy test only. If it turns out you’re not pregnant, we could give you another appointment, and you can come and have a full exam. And when you get your full exam, we can give you pills.

CALLER: Okay. And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: We don’t tell anybody, anything to anyone, unless you give us permission to.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But without your permission we can’t.

CALLER: Is it cool if I call you back after I talk to my boyfriend?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Edna. I’m leaving actually in 15 minutes. If I’m not here, you can speak to Eileen, or I’ll be here tomorrow if you prefer to talk to me.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And like I said, you’re in the book right now for next Wednesday at 2:45. So if that doesn’t work, let me know.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Good luck.

CALLER: Bye.

RECORDING: Hello. You have reached Planned Parenthood Mohawk, Hudson’s Oneida Center. If you know your party’s extension, please enter it now. To make an appointment or for general information, press 0 or stay —

One moment, please.

(Phone ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not right here, this clinic. We do them in Utica.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number or whatever?

CLINIC: Do I have what?

CALLER: The phone number for that?

CLINIC: You want to cal Utica?

CALLER: I guess.

CLINIC: Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know you’re pregnant for sure?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay. And it came out positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you want to have an abortion.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Do you live in Oneida?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Do you live in Oneida?

CALLER: I live in Madison.

CLINIC: Madison?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Is it easier for you to get to Utica than it is Oneida? I can give you their phone number if you want to.

CALLER: Well, my friend told me to go to you guys.

CLINIC: Okay. You could come here. First we would start with a pregnancy test. We’d have to do one here. You’d come here first for an exam. And then we would set you up in an appointment to go to Utica and have it done.

CALLER: All right. My friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion or whatever.

CLINIC: No. This is totally confidential. You don’t need their permission.

CALLER: Yeah. Because I can’t tell my parents at all. My boyfriend’s 22. We’re planning on getting married. But my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Oh. How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Ooooh. That is kind of old for you, but I won’t be your parent and tell you that.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: You’ve probably heard that enough.

Okay. So when was your last period?

CALLER: Well, it was like around maybe the first week in December.

CLINIC: First week of December?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m trying to see how far along you are now. So you’ve missed two periods?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So you’re over 10 — you’re going on about 10 weeks now. So we’d have to get you in here right away. In Utica — depending on when your period started — if I put it on December 1st, say you got your period December 1st, that puts you at — you’re about 10-and-a-half weeks.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys don’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. It could stay confidential. Do you know how you were going to pay for it?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Because it’s going to be — tell him it could be over $400.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So check with him on that first to make sure he’s going to pay for it.

CALLER: If you guys did the pregnancy test, and it turned out I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah? And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No. No. Everything’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When can you get in here?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend, and then call you back to see when he can get off work.

CLINIC: Okay. So why don’t you do that. Let me tell you what we have. Does he work days?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If he could get in here Friday, first thing in the morning, like 8:45 —

CALLER: I don’t know. I’ve got to see.

CLINIC: We can squeeze you in Monday. You’re going to have to get in here soon because they might not have appointments available, okay? And the further along you are, the more it cost.

CALLER: So when I call back, is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure. You can talk to one of the other girls, too, Janet. Janet answers the phone.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sandy, Sandy V. There are two of us here.

CALLER: Sandy V. All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Call me back.

CALLER: Thanks. Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.
