CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not right here, this clinic. We do them in Utica.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number or whatever?

CLINIC: Do I have what?

CALLER: The phone number for that?

CLINIC: You want to cal Utica?

CALLER: I guess.

CLINIC: Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know you’re pregnant for sure?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay. And it came out positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you want to have an abortion.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Do you live in Oneida?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Do you live in Oneida?

CALLER: I live in Madison.

CLINIC: Madison?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Is it easier for you to get to Utica than it is Oneida? I can give you their phone number if you want to.

CALLER: Well, my friend told me to go to you guys.

CLINIC: Okay. You could come here. First we would start with a pregnancy test. We’d have to do one here. You’d come here first for an exam. And then we would set you up in an appointment to go to Utica and have it done.

CALLER: All right. My friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion or whatever.

CLINIC: No. This is totally confidential. You don’t need their permission.

CALLER: Yeah. Because I can’t tell my parents at all. My boyfriend’s 22. We’re planning on getting married. But my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Oh. How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Ooooh. That is kind of old for you, but I won’t be your parent and tell you that.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: You’ve probably heard that enough.

Okay. So when was your last period?

CALLER: Well, it was like around maybe the first week in December.

CLINIC: First week of December?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m trying to see how far along you are now. So you’ve missed two periods?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So you’re over 10 — you’re going on about 10 weeks now. So we’d have to get you in here right away. In Utica — depending on when your period started — if I put it on December 1st, say you got your period December 1st, that puts you at — you’re about 10-and-a-half weeks.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys don’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. It could stay confidential. Do you know how you were going to pay for it?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Because it’s going to be — tell him it could be over $400.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So check with him on that first to make sure he’s going to pay for it.

CALLER: If you guys did the pregnancy test, and it turned out I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah? And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No. No. Everything’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When can you get in here?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend, and then call you back to see when he can get off work.

CLINIC: Okay. So why don’t you do that. Let me tell you what we have. Does he work days?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If he could get in here Friday, first thing in the morning, like 8:45 —

CALLER: I don’t know. I’ve got to see.

CLINIC: We can squeeze you in Monday. You’re going to have to get in here soon because they might not have appointments available, okay? And the further along you are, the more it cost.

CALLER: So when I call back, is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure. You can talk to one of the other girls, too, Janet. Janet answers the phone.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sandy, Sandy V. There are two of us here.

CALLER: Sandy V. All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Call me back.

CALLER: Thanks. Bye.
