(Dialing, phone ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not here.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I’m pretty sure. I think so. I took a pregnancy test over the weekend, and it was positive.

CLINIC: Well, you can come here and have a pregnancy test, and we can send you somewhere, either one of our offices or wherever.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter how old you are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter at all.

Let’s see —

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: Not at all.

CALLER: Okay. My problem is I can’t tell my parents because my boyfriend’s 22. Well, he’s going to take care of anything, but they just really don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. And there’s just no way they can find out we’re having sex.

CLINIC: We don’t tell anything to anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can you come in next Wednesday? Would that be too much of a wait?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend and see if he can get the time off of work.

CLINIC: Do you want me to give you an appointment, and then he can take the time off? Do you want to do that?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call him and see.

CLINIC: Well, why don’t you schedule it. And then if you can’t make it, just give us a call back and cancel it. That way you’ll have a spot at least in the book.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you think it would be easier for him to take off in the morning or in the afternoon?

CALLER: The afternoon.

CLINIC: How about we do like a 2:45?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you ever been here before or no?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What is your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine Smith.

CLINIC: How do you spell your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Oh, Smith? I’m sorry.

CALLER: That’s all right.

CLINIC: And a phone number where we can reach you?

CALLER: I’d have to give you my boyfriend’s number, but I’d have to —

CLINIC: Talk to him first?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to put down no phone. And then just give us a call to see if that’s okay. And then that morning you also want to give us a call just to confirm, make sure the appointment’s still here, and that we’re open and all of that, since I can’t call you.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay, Christine?

CALLER: Well, if it turns out that I’m not pregnant, could you guys do birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, actually, this appointment is for a pregnancy test only. If it turns out you’re not pregnant, we could give you another appointment, and you can come and have a full exam. And when you get your full exam, we can give you pills.

CALLER: Okay. And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: We don’t tell anybody, anything to anyone, unless you give us permission to.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But without your permission we can’t.

CALLER: Is it cool if I call you back after I talk to my boyfriend?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Edna. I’m leaving actually in 15 minutes. If I’m not here, you can speak to Eileen, or I’ll be here tomorrow if you prefer to talk to me.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And like I said, you’re in the book right now for next Wednesday at 2:45. So if that doesn’t work, let me know.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Good luck.

CALLER: Bye.
