(Dialing, phone ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Toni.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: All right. It can be anywhere, depending on the procedure, from 375 to 440.

CALLER: Okay. What’s the difference in the price?

CLINIC: There’s two different procedures that we do.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Like what?

CLINIC: One is a surgical procedure, and the other one is a medial procedure. Have you heard about the RU486?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Well, that’s what they call it on the news. We call it Mifepristone. Can you hold one second?

CALLER: Sure.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(Pause)

CLINIC: It’s actually a pill that you take. You wait two days, and then you insert four tablets vaginally. And it has you terminate actually at home when you insert those four tablets.

CALLER: Okay. What was the other one?

CLINIC: The other one is a surgical procedure where we use the suction machine.

CALLER: Oh. Would you guys have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: As long as you come here, your parents do not have to be informed. The only way that they would be is if something that happened, and we had to send you to the emergency room. Then your parents would have to be contacted.

CALLER: What could happen?

CLINIC: Well, they go over all that with you when you come in for your counseling.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Do you have to be a certain age to get an abortion or anything? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, you don’t. Have you been to a doctor and had a positive test done yet?

CALLER: No. I took a pregnancy test over the weekend, and it was positive.

CLINIC: Okay. The best thing for you to do is you’d have to come in and meet with either one of our nurses or our counselor. We’d actually do a pregnancy test, and they would go over all your options and explain everything to you, the different procedures, and payment, and everything.

CALLER: Can my boyfriend come with me?

CLINIC: He can come with you. When they first take you back, though, they’ll only bring you because there is some confidential stuff that we need to go over with you.

CALLER: Okay. He’s like 22.

CLINIC: It’s still because it’s confidential.

CALLER: You guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. Because my parents can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Right. Now, the soonest, actually, that we would be able to see you is if you wanted to come in to the teen clinic. It’s every Thursday from 2:30 to 5:30. You don’t need an appointment; you just come in. And then they can do the pregnancy test and your counseling at that time.

CALLER: Okay. Is there any way that you guys can do birth control there?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: Yeah? And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it okay if my boyfriend comes and picks up the birth control?

CLINIC: After you have an order written for it and everything, yep, he can.

CALLER: Okay. If he has any questions, is it all right if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Toni.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.
