CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at the Clifton Park Center. We would refer you to Schenectady or Glens Falls.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for the Schenectady one?

CLINIC: Are you from Clifton Park?

CALLER: Well, no. I live in Sloansville.

CLINIC: Okay. What you can do is, you can have your visit here and we would send you there. Did you want to make an appointment here to see a counselor?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Could I — I’m just worried. Could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: It’s just — well, the thing is I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We’re a confidential service, so you are able to have services here confidentially. We don’t need to, because of the laws in New York state we do not notify your family.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Regardless of your age. Those are the laws in New York state. You don’t have to notify. We do provide that confidential service.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just that I haven’t had my period since like December 26, so that’s why I’m worried.

CLINIC: Okay. What we’ll need to do is schedule you for a pregnancy test with a counselor, okay?

CALLER: Okay. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: We go on a sliding fee scale. Do you have any type of insurance?

CALLER: No. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay. When you come on in, you’ll talk to the counselor about that and she will asses what category to put you in. There are also —

CALLER: What days do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: Usually on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Let me check. Can you hold on a minute? Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: Uh-uh.

CLINIC: (pause) Okay. The next appointment would be —

CALLER: Well, do you know if I ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, absolutely.

CALLER: That’s just one thing that we were wanting to do. We just don’t want to have to worry about all this again. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. My goodness, no. (laughs)

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: These are confidential services, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend if — we were just talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. If he was paying for it, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not. Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What days do you have like next week for this, because I would have to call my boyfriend to see when he could get off work.

CLINIC: On a Friday I’ve got 8:00 to noon.

CALLER: Tomorrow?

CLINIC: Next Friday.

CALLER: Let me call him and see if that’s good for him. Could I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: Yes I’m Deborah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Either me or Lois.

CALLER: Lois?

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And we’ll schedule that appointment for you.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: What’s your first name?

CALLER: It’s Lisa.

CLINIC: Okay, Lisa. We’ll wait to hear from you.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Okay, bye.

CALLER: Bye.
