CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: For 12 weeks or less, it’s $350.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: By the first day of your last menstrual period.

CALLER: Oh. Well, that was January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. That would put you about nine weeks now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So $350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to set up an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I actually wanted to ask a question. I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it all, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’re 13 now?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. Are you going to be paying with cash?

CALLER: Yeah. By boyfriend said he would pay for everything with cash.

CLINIC: Your boyfriend is 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay, no, not that I know of. If you can hold on one second, I could find out for you.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay, yeah. That should be fine.

CALLER: So it would cost 350?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that beforehand just to make sure?

CLINIC: Actually, you need to get a positive pregnancy test before we schedule the appointment for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: We do. But we won’t be doing those for another two weeks. Let me give you a phone number to a clinic that can do that for you. Are you close to Central and Carlisle or Candelaria and Eubank?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend can drive to Central.

CLINIC: 265-3722.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was there for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So if it turned out that I was pregnant, I’d call you guys back?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Well, I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Sure. You can get that from that clinic that you go to for your pregnancy test.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, nobody’s going to tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Michele.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CALLER: Dr. Ferguson’s office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: The price ranges between 350 to 500 depending on how far along you are and what procedure you choose?

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Well, we schedule an appointment going by the first day of your last period, but that is verified with an ultra sound when you come in.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my last period was January 3rd.

CLINIC: (Pause) January 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Today it looks like you’re about eight weeks and about five days. So that would be 350.

CALLER: Oh, okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Umm, let’s see. Usually we only require a patient’s signature when you’re using Medicaid.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay everything for cash.

CLINIC: Okay. Then that shouldn’t be a problem, but let me just double-check, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. No. Again, the only time that we would require a parent’s signature is if you were using Medicaid.

CALLER: Okay. So if we were paying with cash, you would have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: My boyfriend and I were talking about all this. And he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anybody to know about us. Would you have to tell anybody or have him sign any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Do you guys do a pregnancy test before you guys go and do the abortion?

CLINIC: Well, have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. We would need to have you have a positive pregnancy test before we could even schedule the appointment.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you do that there?

CLINIC: Yes. We do pregnancy testing between 9 and 11 in the morning and 2 and 4.

CALLER: Okay. What days?

CLINIC: Monday through Friday.

CALLER: If I came in there and I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: I believe so, yes. You would need to meet with the doctor however. On Wednesdays and Thursdays the doctor does not see patients in the afternoon. So you might want to come — if you’re going to come either tomorrow or Thursday, you might want to come in the morning between 9 and 11.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. I need to call my boyfriend to see what time to come. But is it all right — you’ve just been so nice. Could I call you back if I had any other questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Susan. And yes, you can definitely call us back if you have any more questions and concerns. We are open until 5:00, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Dr. Boyd. This is (unclear). How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much it cost?

CLINIC: Depending how far you pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far?

CLINIC: Well, tell me the first day of your last menstrual period.

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: It will be $350 if it’s the first trimester. Between 5 to 12 weeks it’s 350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you have insurance or Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, the thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and take care of everything?

CLINIC: Are you on Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: Why do we have to call your parents?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know. My friend just said that —

CLINIC: No. We never call nobody’s parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And you pay cash. If you had Medicaid and you’re under age, Medicaid wants a note from a counselor or a parent giving you permission to perform the abortion. But we don’t call nobody, and they don’t call anybody. If you’re paying cash, that’s no problem.

CALLER: Oh, okay. The thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything would he have to sign any forms?

CLINIC: It’s very confidential here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Tell me the first day of your last menstrual period again.

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: You’re in the first trimester. You’re about 10 weeks, going to be 10 weeks. So you can come this Friday.

CALLER: Friday?

CLINIC: Uh-huh, in the morning or in the afternoon.

CALLER: Well, will you guys do a pregnancy test first just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do that. Okay? You want to call me back?

CALLER: Yeah. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there too?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No. Only if you terminate a pregnancy we give you birth control pills, but we don’t sell any birth control pills to anybody.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Do a pregnancy test. You buy one at the pharmacy. Those ones are very good.

CALLER: Oh, they are?

CLINIC: Yes. They are super good.

CALLER: What kind should I get though?

CLINIC: Any kind. The EPT. They’re good, very good.

CALLER: And if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, where should I go to get birth control?

CLINIC: You need to go to your doctor. They’re not going to give you any birth control. They need to do a pap smear on you. Nobody’s going to give you birth control pills just like that.

CALLER: Okay. I don’t want my parents to know I was on birth control though.

CLINIC: Well, they don’t have to know either. You just need to take care of those pills so they don’t find them. If you put them in your purse, and you take them everyday at the same time, you know, there’s no problem. Or you can leave it with your boyfriend, whatever.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Dr. Seiss (ph) office. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much that cost?

CLINIC: Yeah. Are you planning on paying cash?

CALLER: Well, yeah. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything in cash.

CLINIC: If you’re under 12 weeks, the cost is $450.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: Do you happen to know the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay, yeah. You’re probably well under 12 weeks based on those dates.

CALLER: So how much would it be then?

CLINIC: 450.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents. As long as you’re paying cash, it’s totally — you can do it on your own.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you need to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend would have to bring me in. I need to see what times you have available?

CLINIC: Okay. Let me look it up here. We offer the procedure Tuesday through Friday. And I have availability Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.

CALLER: What time?

CLINIC: What we do is have you come in the morning first thing at 8 for a work-up. And then we have you come back in the afternoon for your procedure. We don’t know exactly what time in the afternoon until after your morning appointment. It just depends on how many people show up. So you’d kind of need to be prepared to be a little bit flexible in the afternoon.

CALLER: So would it be better if my boyfriend just took the whole day off of work?

CLINIC: Probably better, yeah.

CALLER: Well, I would have to call him. But how much money should he bring?

CLINIC: 450.

CALLER: Would you guys do a pregnancy test before just to make sure?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: We just talked about all this. He said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would anyone have to know anything if he was paying for it all?

CLINIC: Oh, no, nothing. Yeah, it’s totally confidential.

CALLER: Do you think that there would be any way after the pregnancy test that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: So you’ve missed a period?

CALLER: Well, I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd. That’s why we’re just really scared.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, do you use birth control?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Yeah. Chances are you’re probably pregnant. It’s certainly possible based on what you’ve told me. There are also other possibilities. I mean, sometimes women just don’t ovulate, and they don’t have a period. Are you feeling any unusual symptoms?

CALLER: Not really.

CLINIC: Any breast tenderness or nausea or anything like that?

CALLER: No. But if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control just so that we don’t have to worry about all this anymore?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope, not at all.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for birth control?

CLINIC: It depends on what all you’d like to have done. Usually what we do when we start somebody on birth control is we ask that they do a pap smear.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: The problem with that — I’m thinking out loud here for a second, because I wouldn’t want the lab to bill you for a pap smear unless you were comfortable with that. But it might alert somebody.

CALLER: Well, I can’t have anyone — yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. Your other option, which would be a lot cheaper for you, would be to go to Planned Parenthood. If you’re not pregnant and you want to get started on birth control, you can go to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh. But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, not at all. They’re very confidential too. Do you go to junior high or high school?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Okay. That would be my suggestion. If you come in and it turns out that you’re not pregnant, I would go to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Are they all right there?

CLINIC: Oh, they’re awesome. Yeah. They’re great. And it’s totally private, and it’s really mellow. Yeah, no problem at all.

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know about us, so they’d be all right with that too?

CLINIC: Sure. I mean, as long as you’re all right with it —

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: — they’re all right with it. You know what I mean? And you don’t have to tell them that actually. If you’re uncomfortable telling them that, you don’t have to. All you need to do is just go in and say I need birth control; I’m sexually active. That’s all you need to do.

CALLER: Okay. I just with I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you.

CLINIC: I know.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Nancy.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Lisa.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t, but the Durango Planned Parenthood does, and the Albuquerque Planned Parenthood does. And I could give you those numbers.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Durango is 1-800-472-4884. And Albuquerque is 1-800-877-1238.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you real quick — I’m just kind of worried. Because like well I’m going to be 14 later on this month and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah. I believe so.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. I would just call and confirm that with whichever clinic you want to go to, but I’m fairly certain that you’ll be okay.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys be able to do that? The main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like right after Christmas, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, we could definitely do a pregnancy test. They’re $22 except for Thursdays. We do them for $8.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Nope. Not at all. No, the only thing is, there’s only a certain amount of time in which that you can get an abortion done, and it sounds like you’re right on the edge because if you haven’t had a period since December and you are in fact pregnant, it’s been a long time.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So I would get in as soon as you can.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Definitely.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Nope. We wouldn’t tell anybody.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. So we’ll see you soon?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Rebecca.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, not at this particular clinic.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Yeah, yeah. We have an abortion clinic. Would you like the phone number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 265-9511.

CALLER: Okay. Where is that exactly?

CLINIC: It’s on San Mateo in between (Loomis and Copper?).

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know, — I’m just really worried about all this because like — well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Oh, we wouldn’t have to tell them.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: That’s fine. Do you have Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay then, that’s fine. You’re fine.

CALLER: It’s just we were talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it all?

CLINIC: Well, yeah, it’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But if he goes in with you, you know, you guys will have to bring your IDs. But they can tell you all that if you call our surgical site.

CALLER: Oh. But I’m not old enough to drive. I don’t have an ID.

CLINIC: If you have a school ID or something like that. You can ask them that question. I have no idea what they usually do about that.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a school ID either.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: It’s just I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and that’s why I’m really worried about all this. So.

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Oh, you haven’t?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you can call them. You can do it there, or you can do it here, the pregnancy test.

CALLER: So if I come in there would it be all right if my boyfriend was there with me?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was there for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. All the Planned Parenthoods are completely confidential.

CALLER: Oh, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: If you’re not pregnant can you get birth control?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah, definitely.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. How soon would I be able to get that?

CLINIC: If you come in before 3:00 today you can get it today.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: But all right. But so if I was on birth control you wouldn’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. I just don’t want anyone to know about all this, so.

CLINIC: That’s fine. You know where we’re located?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend does. He said that he would take me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So. All right. So if I had any other questions could I calla nd talk to you?

CLINIC: Yeah, definitely but, yeah, we can definitely see you today. We have our walk-in clinic today until 3:00, so if you get here before 3:00 we can see you today.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Bye.
