CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Millie. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anyone that does?

CLINIC: I cannot give that information until you have check-up with us. We can give you a referral after a check-up.

CALLER: A check-up? Okay. What would I do for that?

CLINIC: You need to make an appointment. Have you been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: The soonest that I can put you in will be Saturday, the 23rd or the 25th, Monday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t know. I have to call my boyfriend and see if he can get off work. But can you answer a question for me?

CLINIC: What?

CALLER: Well, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just my parents can’t know.

CLINIC: Don’t worry. They don’t have to know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Because if they found out we were having sex, they would be so mad. They can’t stand him. He’s 22, and they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. Don’t worry. If you want a referral, first of all we need a check-up, and we can give a referral. After that, you have to call them up, and ask how much it is, and whatever you want to go.

CALLER: What if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Well, that’s why you need a check-up here and a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys be able to give me birth control or anything?

CLINIC: After the termination? Yeah.

CALLER: Well, like if I wasn’t pregnant.

CLINIC: Oh yeah. If you were not pregnant, yeah.

CALLER: Is there like an age limit for that or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So it’s okay if I’m like —

CLINIC: If you’re 12.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: That’s okay. All right?

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: No. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Can I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. Like I said, 10:15 on the 23rd or Monday the 25th at 3:30.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Millie.
