TAPE – 057

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Dover. Brenda speaking. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know anyone that, like, would or anything?

CLINIC: You’d have to be a patient here to get the information. We have to be the one to do your pregnancy test and so forth in order to give you a referral.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do I — what do I need to do?

CLINIC: You have to have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If the test is positive, then you have to have a doctor’s appointment for a complete gynecological check-up with a pap smear to determine how pregnant you are. Then we can make a referral.

CALLER: All right. What do I need to do?

CLINIC: Have you missed a period?

CALLER: Well, yeah, like —

CLINIC: Are you more than 14 days late?

CALLER: Well, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Once you’ve missed a period and you’re 14 days late, you can come at anytime that we’re open, which is Monday through Saturday. We open at 9:00. Tuesday and Friday we close at 4:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday we close at 7:00, and Saturday at 3:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can just walk in anytime. We’ll do a pregnancy test. And if it turns out positive, then we’ll make you an appointment to come in and see the doctor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: What if I — I did do a pregnancy test like last weekend.

CLINIC: You have to do a professional test. We have to do the test to establish it’s —

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be like — do you guys have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No. How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No. You can come in and get a test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: And nobody would have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Of course, in order for you to get the termination, I mean, you may need some money. And that may be that you’d have to talk to your parents about it or talk to somebody that can help you pay for it.

CALLER: Oh, well, my boyfriend will pay for that.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just my parents can’t know at all. He’s 22. And we’re plan on getting married, but they can’t stand him because they think he’s too old for me. But they just can’t find out that we’re having sex.

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: I would get in big trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. So then just come in, and we’ll do the test, and see what we have to do after that, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: If you guys did the test and I wasn’t pregnant, would there be any way to get birth control?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah? Would you guys have to tell anybody about that at all?

CLINIC: No. You just have to make an appointment to come in to see the doctor. The doctor will examine you, and then give you a method of birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, can I call you guys back later today or —

CLINIC: Well, you can just come in. You don’t need an appointment to come in for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So you just come in for that. And once that’s done, then we can make arrangements, appointments to come back for the rest of the stuff.

CALLER: Well, I need to talk to my boyfriend. But if he has questions, can I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Yeah, sure. Well, today is Tuesday. So we’re only here until 4:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So tomorrow would be the best day because we’re here from 9:00 in the morning until 7:00 at night.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name so I can ask you.

CLINIC: My name is Brenda. I may or may not be here. But any of the girls will help you as well.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
