ABORTION CONTRACEPTION CLINIC OF NEBRASKA

TAPE – 786

(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Abortion (Unclear), Mary speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far along in the pregnancy are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last normal menstrual cycle?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd. So you’re just missing a period now then, right, or maybe last week?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So you would be considered — assuming that you weren’t pregnant before that or in some funky time — that you’d be only about five weeks from that date. Any procedure less than 11 weeks 6 days — with what you’re telling me you should be well less than that — it’s 320 for a local anesthetic, where they numb the cervix and you’re awake and you have menstrual like cramping. Or if you want IV sedation, which is like a twilight sleep, it’s an extra $50, making it 370. So you have a choice of local for 320 or IV sedation for 370.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. The thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything. But would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Either your parents have to know or you have to go to — where are you calling from, what area?

CALLER: Plattsmouth.

CLINIC: Plattsmouth? Okay. That’s Cass County. You’d have to go to the courthouse in Cass County or the courthouse here in Sargent (?) County because we’re the only county that touches Cass County. I know Sargent does, and it’s also where we’re located at. And they can get what they call a judicial bypass. And the judge can give you an official letter saying you don’t have to tell your parents. All you have to do is act mature —

CALLER: Well, it is hard to get that?

CLINIC: No, not really. I’ve not really seen many people — most of the girls have no problem. Not really. The one in Sargent County, they only do theirs — if you go to Sarpet County, they only do them on Friday mornings. You have to be there right at 8:00. But I don’t know what Cass County does. You’d have to call Cass County and ask about judicial bypass.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for all that?

CLINIC: There’s no cost for judicial bypass, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand? I mean, I haven’t had one of those yet.

CLINIC: We do free pregnancy tests here even if you want to stop by and have a pregnancy test, so you may as well not worry. Maybe you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: When do you guys normally do them?

CLINIC: Pregnancy tests? The girls are here from 8 ’til 6, Monday through Fridays, usually 8 to 5 on Saturdays, and 12 to 5 on Sundays.

CALLER: So I could come in on Saturdays?

CLINIC: Yeah, and get a pregnancy test first and find out whether you have to worry or not. Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control too?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: When you first start on birth control pills, you should get a pap smear and stuff. So we can.

CALLER: Well, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, getting a pap smear is $75. And we start you with some samples, and then we can give you a prescription for the rest of the year.

CALLER: If he was paying for everything, would he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: You would have to fill the forms out. You can get birth control without parents knowing.

CALLER: Okay. So you’re sure that nobody would have to know about this?

CLINIC: Not for birth control. And if you need a abortion, you have to go to the judge, and that shouldn’t be a problem. But I can’t guarantee it won’t be. And their records, they can’t tell your parents. They’re field records, and they can’t tell them.

CALLER: So nobody would know about my boyfriend though?

CLINIC: About your boyfriend? No, we’re not going to tell anybody about your boyfriend (laughing).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Dee.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Nope. I can give you a number.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s 322-6650.

CALLER: Okay. Well, where is that exactly?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood in Council Bluffs.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Can I ask a question real quick?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: It’s just I’m scared because my friend told me that — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that my parents would have to know about it. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and no one would have to know anything?

CLINIC: You know, that I can’t tell you. But you can try to do judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: And that’s when you go before a judge, and a judge will award you competency to get an abortion, says that it’s okay for you to have an abortion.

CALLER: Well, does the judge ever say no?

CLINIC: Very rarely do they say no. And if you call that clinic, they’ll set up a time for you to come in. And they’ll talk to you and go over what’s it like to be in front of the judge and some of the questions that he would ask you. But very rare do they deny them.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I’m just scared because my last period was like December 14th. Is there any way that I couldn’t be pregnant you think?

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, that would be your first step.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Sure. You can do it anytime before 5:00 today.

CALLER: Well, do you have any times like tomorrow?

CLINIC: Anytime before 4:00, 9 to 4.

CALLER: Tomorrow?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: I really wanted my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that okay if he’s there?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. He just doesn’t want a whole bunch of people asking questions. Does he have to sign anything if he’s there?

CLINIC: No. He doesn’t have to sign anything.

CALLER: He just doesn’t want anyone to know. My parents can’t find out at all. And I’m scared that they would, because I don’t know what would happen if they found out.

CLINIC: No. We’re strictly a confidential clinic. So if you come in for a pregnancy test, you don’t tell, we’re not telling. Okay? Ten dollars, cash or credit card only. And you can do it tomorrow between 9 to 4.

CALLER: If the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: We sure wouldn’t.

CALLER: Do you know if it would be all right if my boyfriend came and picked it up? Because I don’t have a car. I don’t know how I’d pick it up.

CLINIC: That would be fine.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. We’ll see you some time tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Becky. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not at this clinic.

CALLER: Well, okay. Do you know of anybody that might?

CLINIC: Yeah, the Planned Parenthood in Council Bluffs.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That number’s 322-6650.

CALLER: Okay. My friend actually told me — I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of whatever that is?

CLINIC: I don’t think so.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents? Because they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: There’s this thing called the judicial bypass, and you have to go and talk to a judge.

CALLER: Okay. What happens? How does that work?

CLINIC: I’m not exactly sure. Can you hold on?

CALLER: Yeah.

(Pause)

(Call disconnected)

(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Becky. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was just on hold, and I got disconnected.

CLINIC: Oh. You’re about the judicial bypass.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Shoot. Ain’t nobody out here, so I didn’t get a chance to ask anybody.

CALLER: I’m just really scared because my last period was December 14th, and that’s why I’m worried about this. But do you think that there would be any way that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Pardon me?

CALLER: Do you think that there would be any way that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: That could be.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, that would be a good way to find out.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s $10 cash or credit card only.

CALLER: I kind of want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine. He can come in for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there, would you?

CLINIC: No way.

CALLER: He just doesn’t want anybody to know and ask a lot of questions. If the pregnancy test showed that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. But you need to get a pap smear, pelvic and breast exam then.

CALLER: Oh, okay. When would be the best time to get that done?

CLINIC: What?

CALLER: The exam and the pregnancy test and everything.

CLINIC: Maybe you could go ahead and just come in for a pregnancy test. You don’t have to make an appointment for that at all. Just come in. We’ll be here. We’ll do it until 5:30 today and then until 4:00 tomorrow. Just come in and bring $10 cash or credit card only, and we’ll see if you’re pregnant. And then if you’re not, we’ll go ahead and set you up an appointment for your exam.

CALLER: Well, if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody anything about it?

CLINIC: No way.

CALLER: I don’t drive or anything. Would it be all right if my boyfriend came and picked them up after I was on them?

CLINIC: Yeah. We give you an i.d. card, and he would just need to bring that i.d. card.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Because we’re not going to give any kind of information without that i.d. number. So we try and stay confidential that way.

CALLER: So if I did the judicial bypass, do you think the judge would say it’s all right and everything?

CLINIC: I don’t know. You have to just prove to them that you’re mature enough.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I’m not exactly sure how that works.

CALLER: Do you know what kind of questions they would ask?

CLINIC: I don’t. I don’t have any idea.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I called the clinic, the number that you gave me, would they know?

CLINIC: The abortion clinic?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: They might know more than I do.

CALLER: Okay. When would be the best time to come in for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Just anytime. We’re open today until 5:30, tomorrow from 9 to 4, and we’ll be here on Saturday from 9 to 12:30.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about me and my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Michelle.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering actually if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t. Our Council Bluffs office is the only one that does.

CALLER: Oh. Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Sure. It’s 322-6650.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like my friend actually told me like, I’ll be 14 in March and she told me that my parents would have to be told that I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: He could, yeah. Just have him go ahead and — he can set up an appointment to talk to somebody actually beforehand.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just let them know the situation when you’re setting up, when you call to set up your appointment, and they’ll go ahead and rearrange so they can go ahead and do the process with him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So you’re sure that no one has to know anything at all?

CLINIC: They’ll have you — what they’ll have you do is just go in and you’ll end up signing a waiver and probably talking to a lawyer so that you don’t have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Well, how much does the lawyer cost?

CALLER: That’s no charge.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But yeah, just let them know that you’re probably going to be interested in the judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then just let them know your situation.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I’m just really scared because like I just haven’t had a period since December 14, so I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Have you had a test yet, a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Just let them know that. They might want to have you come in first.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for that? Like my friend gave me this number because she said that you were the best place to go.

CLINIC: Okay. We do that — if you want to come in we do that Saturday from 9 to 12:30 or Monday 9 to 5:30.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And it’s $10.

CALLER: Is it all right like — I wanted my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he just doesn’t want anybody to know about us. Would you guys be asking a whole bunch of questions or anything?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s what we do.

CALLER: Okay. So what could I do then?

CLINIC: Let me see. Just a second.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: (pause) Okay. So you said you haven’t had a, you haven’t run a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. With the difference in age, legally if you come in we would have to report –

CALLER: What do you mean? Who would you have to report it to?

CLINIC: The police. It’s statutory rape.

CALLER: Well, he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I know, but that’s the law.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: He would still be charged whether you consent or not.

CALLER: But, so what could I do then? I mean, I don’t want him to go to jail.

CLINIC: Otherwise you’re going to have to notify your parents.

CALLER: They can’t tell my parents. I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Any health clinic that you go into is going to be — they’re mandatory reporters. Anybody’s going to have to call the cops.

CALLER: Well, okay. Well, would it just be better not to say anything about him and not to have him come with me?

CLINIC: If you want to go through that alone. If you don’t tell them, you can try going to the Council Bluffs clinic because they don’t know what’s going on then.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye bye.

3705 SOUTH ST.
LINCOLN, NE 68506-6044

TAPE – 360

(Dialing, phone ringing 3x)

CLINIC: Hello, Planned Parenthood. South Street.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yeah, we do perform them at our clinic.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Do you know how far along you are?

CALLER: No, not really.

CLINIC: Can I put you on hold for just a second?

CALLER: Sure.

RECORDING: — control methods, pregnancy testing, as well as diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infection. Sexually transmitted infection screening and treatment are also available for both men and women. Our trained and licensed family nurse practitioner treats common family illnesses like sinusitis —

CLINIC: Hi. This is the nurse. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was just talking to someone else and she gave me to you. But I was wondering about abortions.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your question?

CALLER: Well, she was saying that I needed to get a pregnancy test I think.

CLINIC: Do you want information on abortion, what it cost, or do you want to make an appointment, or what is it that you’re —

CALLER: Well, I’m just confused, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Before we can — I can give you information on abortion, but you do need to — you haven’t had a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: You have to take a pregnancy test first to make sure because there’s lots of other reasons why you don’t get a period. So you need to take a pregnancy test and make sure that you’re pregnant. And you can come here and do that if you want or just do a home pregnancy test. We’re only open until 4:30 today. But like on Monday we’re open to 6:30, if that makes a difference. And then once you have the positive pregnancy test, we can set you up with our counselor. There’s no charge for it. She has appointments on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. And you can discuss with her options and what’s available to you and that type of thing.

CALLER: Okay. My problem is — the main reason why I’m scared is because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March, she said that you guys have to tell my parents that I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: Oh God, no. He’ll get charged with statutory rape.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: (Laughing).

CALLER: What is that? I mean, he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: You’re not suppose to have sex with girls under 16. There is things available if you want to have an abortion and don’t want to tell your parents.

CALLER: I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: Okay. Then you would need to — there’s a parental notification law in Nebraska. You’re suppose to notify your parents. But we can get you a judicial bypass, it’s called.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: You have to go to court and talk to the judge, and tell him why you can’t tell your parents. And he will issue an order saying that it’s okay for us to do the abortion without telling your parents.

CALLER: Does he ever say no?

CLINIC: Umm, no, not really. Well, he has I guess but not usually. But you can only do that through our counselor. You also need to get a pregnancy test first. Why don’t I just make you an appointment for next Wednesday. Do you have any idea when your last period was?

CALLER: Yeah. It was like December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s when you started bleeding?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So December 14th, and today is the 21st. So that means you’re already 10 weeks pregnant. And we go up to 16 weeks. The price changes at 12 weeks. So you want to get in as soon as you can so it doesn’t go up any higher. Right now it’s 360.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Well, let me go get that schedule and give you an appointment to talk to our counselor Coleen (sp) for next Wednesday.

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see if that’s a good — if he can take me.

CLINIC: Where are you at?

CALLER: I’m in Courtland.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. So you’re not that far away. Is that about 45 minutes from here, 40 minutes from Lincoln?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so, maybe half an hour.

CLINIC: Well, she only has very limited appointments. She has three on Wednesday afternoon, and she has two on Thursday morning, and that’s it.

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see when he could get off work.

CLINIC: Well, I think we should make the appointment for you know. And then if you can’t keep it, you can call back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But otherwise they might be gone, and you might have to wait until another week.

CALLER: Yeah, I don’t want to wait.

CLINIC: Yeah. Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Well, she didn’t put out a schedule for next week. So you’ll have to wait and call us on Monday.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And tell them that you want to make an appointment with Coleen. Okay? So meanwhile get a pregnancy test though to make sure that you are pregnant.

CALLER: When you were talking about the statutory rape, what all could happen?

CLINIC: Well, the thing is, if a man has sex with a girl under 16, they can be charged with statutory rape. I suppose if you say it was consensual — but your parents, if they found out, they could still do something about it.

CALLER: Would anybody have to tell them?

CLINIC: Your parents?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: No, we’re strictly confidential. And then you have to get that judicial bypass.

CALLER: But would you have to tell the police or anybody?

CLINIC: Oh, no, no, no. No. We wouldn’t. We don’t do anything like that, unless you told us that you were being forced.

CALLER: No. We’re in love. We’re going to get married. He’s going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: Yeah, well. He’s 22. That’s pretty old for a 14-year-old. But that’s okay. That’s not our business. We’re not judging you for that. We would just help you obtain an abortion if that’s what you wanted to do.

CALLER: Could he come in with me to get the pregnancy test? Could he be there with me?

CLINIC: Yeah. Oh, sure.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t say anything. We wouldn’t even know that he was the father. And I don’t know what your name is. I have no clue. No, he can come in with you. You don’t have to say this is my boyfriend who got me pregnant.

CALLER: Oh. So I just don’t say anything?

CLINIC: I just wouldn’t say anything. If you come in to the counselor, she’ll ask you about the father, if he’s involved or whatever. And you can say he’s paying. We don’t bring any legal action whatsoever.

CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. You just come and make an appointment to get an exam. You can get birth control pills from us.

CALLER: The only thing is, is I can’t drive yet because I’ll be 14 in March. Could he come and pick up the pills?

CLINIC: Right. With a signed note from you he could pick them up.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control either?

CLINIC: No. We’re strictly confidential.

CALLER: I just have so many questions I can’t think of right now. Could I call you back and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Joanne. I’m the LPN here, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can call me back on Monday. Now Fridays we do abortions, so we don’t really answer the phones tomorrow. You can either come in on Monday or call me on Monday. And I leave by 3 though usually. So I don’t know if you can get here before then.

CALLER: Well, I’ll talk to him and see.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood on O Street. This is Lenora.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not here, at the other clinic.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have that number?

CLINIC: It’s 441-3333.

CALLER: I’m just really scared because my last period was December 14th, and I don’t really know what to do.

CLINIC: Have you did a pregnancy test already?

CALLER: No, not yet.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, my best thing for you to do is get a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Could I do that there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: My friend told me to call you guys.

CLINIC: The pregnancy tests are on a walk-in basis.

CALLER: What time?

CLINIC: Before 4:30 today.

CALLER: What about tomorrow?

CLINIC: It’s from 8 to 4:30 too.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You don’t need to set an appointment for that or anything.

CALLER: Okay. I’m also worried. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever?

CLINIC: You have to talk to the counselor first.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would she have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know. You have to talk to her.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If I came in for a pregnancy test, would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. That’s confidential here.

CALLER: I would really like my boyfriend to be there with me. Would that be okay if he was there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to say anything about him?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. He’s just worried that we’re going to get in trouble like with my parents and stuff.

CLINIC: I don’t know. I just can’t tell you if you’re going to get in trouble with your parents or with somebody else. Here everything is confidential.

CALLER: So if we came in, you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that we were there?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. But if I wasn’t pregnant after the pregnancy test, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: My problem is that I can’t drive, so would my boyfriend be able to come and pick them up?

CLINIC: If you sign a paper, yes. Because you have to sign a paper for us to give him the pills.

CALLER: Okay.
