TAPE – 352

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CALLER: Good morning, Planned Parenthood. This is Julie. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not. But I can give you referral places if you’d like to call them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. You may want to give them a call. I’m thinking Columbia does it. The number in Columbia Clinic is 573-443-0427. And then I can give you a couple others that are a little further off. There’s one is St. Louis, is 1-800-419-0301. And there’s one in Overland Park, Kansas, 1-800-227-1918.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And Granite City, Illinois, which is just outside of St. Louis. It’s 1-800-844-3130. Try the Columbia Clinic first though because I think they may do them now.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just really scared about all this. My last period was December 14th, and I’m usually pretty regular, and I’m just scared. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to say anything about anything?

CLINIC: You know what I would do? I would call these clinics and ask them, because we don’t deal with that; they do.

CALLER: Well, do you guys do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for that then?

CLINIC: Yeah. Can you hold on a minute?

CALLER: Yeah.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay, I’m sorry. Thank you for holding. What was your question again?

CALLER: I was wondering if you guys did the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests. Yes, we do.

CALLER: I really wanted my boyfriend to be there with me. But is that all right?

CLINIC: Yes, he can come. The only thing I’m going to say is we are booked today with more or less appointments. If you’d want to come in tomorrow, it might work a little better for us, if you could wait until tomorrow for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: What time tomorrow?

CLINIC: Anytime you want to come in is fine. Anytime during the day. I’ll be here from 9 in the morning until about 5:00 that night. And then as for the question about — you had another question. I would call those clinics and ask them.

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test was negative, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You can, but you’d have to see the nurse practitioner, and you’d have to make an appointment for that. She’s only here Monday and Thursday, but we could make an appointment if you’d like when you come in for that.

CALLER: Is there any problem with my boyfriend picking up the birth control? Because I can’t drive.

CLINIC: Well, we can’t give that to you until the nurse practitioner sees you and you actually have what we call an initial visit with her.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like after that?

CLINIC: If you give the okay for him to do it, and you sign a piece of paper, he can pick up the pills for you, yes.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there or getting birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Right, uh-huh. But what I would do is I would call if you have questions regarding that concerning — the facilities that I just gave you, I would call them and ask them if they are confidential also.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Right, uh-huh.

CALLER: He’s just really worried about people saying a whole bunch of stuff.

CLINIC: No, that’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.
