TAPE – 304

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: St. Cloud Planned Parenthood. Amy speaking. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Not in St. Cloud. The only places that do them are in the Twin Cities, Duluth or Fargo. I can give you a phone number if you want me to do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can I put you on hold for a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thanks.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. Sorry about that. The only number I have right off hand is for the Planned Parenthood in St. Paul. Their toll free number is 1-877-890-6225.

CALLER: Can I ask a couple questions real quick?

CLINIC: You know what? I’m really not going to know anything about it just because we don’t do them here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: They’d be able to answer all your questions better than I would.

CALLER: Well, do you know if my parents have to know or anything? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: That I don’t know. I know that there is a law that says that they have to be notified. But I think there’s some kind of a judicial bypass that that’s absolutely impossible. And like I said, they’re the ones that deal with it all the time, so they would be able to help you with that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can do that. We do those on a walk-in basis, if you just come in anytime. It’s a urine pregnancy test so it takes about five minutes to run. But you should plan to be here about 20 minutes with paperwork and talking to the nurse and all that stuff. So if you wanted to come in, you could come in tomorrow between 9 and 4, Thursday between 9 and 6, or Friday between 9 and 3.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could my boyfriend sign for me? He’s 22.

CLINIC: What do you mean sign for you? You don’t need to have your parents’ permission to have a pregnancy test done.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You can just come in here on your own and do that.

CALLER: Would it be all right if my boyfriend came with me?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: He’s worried that you guys would have to say something to him or ask him questions and stuff.

CLINIC: We wouldn’t do anything with him. It’s completely confidential. So you can come in on your own or you can bring him in if you want to. Basically, we’re just going to run the test and tell you what the result is, and refer you from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: We sure do, yes. If it turns out negative, what we can do is schedule you to come in for — well, to get on birth control, you would have to come in for a pap smear and a pelvic exam.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Everything that we do here is confidential.

CALLER: So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: Not about birth control, no. You would be able to just come in, have the exam, and we could get you started on a birth control method once you decide which one that you want to go on. And we can give you all that information when you come in for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
