CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Tory. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: You know about how far along you are.

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Do you know when the first day of your last menstrual period was?

CALLER: I think it was like January 1.

CLINIC: January 1? Okay. That would be $350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that’s with the local anesthetic. It’s not — you are awake for it in other words.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Where exactly are you guys located?

CLINIC: On West Street in Annapolis.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, it’s just, the thing is, I’m kind of worried because, well I’m going to be 14 like on the 20th, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell anybody anyway. Whoever told you that didn’t tell you the truth. We don’t contact parents in other words.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. We don’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, another thing, like me and my boyfriend were talking about this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Well, he’d have to sign like a check or credit card slip, but if —

CALLER: Well, he said that he would pay for cash.

CLINIC: Okay. Then no, he doesn’t have to sign anything, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well —

CLINIC: Did you want to call back and make an appointment after you think things through?

CALLER: Well, I was actually wondering if you guys do the pregnancy tests there too.

CLINIC: Did you already do a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period for awhile, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: You haven’t taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Oh. Yeah, we can do one before the procedure. Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just, my period — I just haven’t had my period for a long time. Do you think that I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: It’s quite possible. You might want to take a pregnancy test. It could just be something that is going wrong.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You should take a pregnancy test. If you know you’re not pregnant you need to see a doctor for that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I ended up that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was getting birth control?

CLINIC: No. (laughs)

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 later on this month.

CLINIC: Okay. No. Nobody has to know about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay, so do you actually know if the pregnancy tests you get at the store are right?

CLINIC: Do I know if they’re right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, they’re very accurate.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, are the ones you guys do better?

CLINIC: They’re about the same thing. I mean, it’s just a clinical form of it, that’s all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, when do you guys — do you guys ever do any appointments on Saturday or —

CLINIC: We only do abortions on Thursdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The Baltimore Health Center does them on Saturdays and Fridays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want their phone number?

CALLER: Well, I have to call my boyfriend and see, but let me call him and call you back. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s quite okay.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name again?

CLINIC: My name is Tory.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can just ask for anybody. It doesn’t matter.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Tory. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, you don’t have to be a certain age, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would you guys have to — like my friend said that you guys have to ask about the, who the father is. Like he’s — is that true, or —

CLINIC: No, that’s not true.

CALLER: Like he’s 22, and he said he was going to take care of everything, so.

CLINIC: Yeah. We don’t need to know who the father is. No, that’s none of our business.

CALLER: But would you guys have to tell my parents or anything? Because they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: No. No. We cannot tell your parents. That will go against everything we stand for.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like, like what all do I need to do to —

CLINIC: Okay. You just need to set up the appointment. Do you know when your last menstrual period was?

CALLER: It was the first week in December.

CLINIC: First week in December, okay. Would you say maybe like the 5th or the 1st, or do you know when it was about?

CALLER: It was probably like maybe closer to the 5th, maybe like the 4th or something. I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. Of December you said?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. We actually only do abortions on Thursdays, so that would mean our next available appointment is the 21st.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Is that an okay day for you? And —

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know. I have to call my boyfriend and see if he can get that day off work, but.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, do you want to call him first before you set up the appointment and ask him if Thursday is an okay day?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, is it all right if he comes with me? Because he’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. He can come and sit in the waiting room. He can’t come in to have the procedure though.

CALLER: Oh, all right. But they wouldn’t have to say anything about him or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Would I have to tell them who he is or —

CLINIC: No. No. We’re not concerned with that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Because he just doesn’t want anyone to know. But.

CLINIC: Okay, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, it would be probably — let me see again. Hold on. December — okay, you would need to get a sonogram (yawns). Oh, pardon me. I’m exhausted. I’m sorry. Okay. You would have to come in in between the hours of 8:00 and 9:30. What time would be good for you in between there?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know. I’d have to see. But.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, ask him. Tell him it will be Thursday, and you’d have to be here in between 8:00 and 9:30 is when you have to set your appointments.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So then ask him, and then you have to call back in order to make the appointment so you can have the procedure, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys do like birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay, so like if I wasn’t pregnant I could get birth control or whatever?

CLINIC: You’re not pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. That’s the thing.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Well, we will do a pregnancy test on that day.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We don’t tell anybody. You don’t have to worry about that. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you just want to do a pregnancy test at home so you’ll know for sure?

CALLER: Well, I did a home pregnancy test over the weekend and it said it was positive.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, then — you —

CALLER: But are they usually accurate?

CLINIC: Well, if you’ve missed your period since December and it’s saying it’s positive I would say you’re probably pregnant then.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. Well, is it okay if I call him and then call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah, sure. No problem. My name is Tory. You can ask for me.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Okay? You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good bye.
