CLINIC: It would be the 420 up to 11 weeks of pregnancy. That fee includes everything unless you have RH negative blood type.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you know what yours is?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: If it’s negative it’s an additional $55. If not, like I said, everything’s included.

CALLER: The thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. By my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We don’t tell anybody. Everything’s strictly confidential. But if you’re under age, then you’ll have to either tell your parents or you can call Planned Parenthood and talk to someone there about getting a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What’s that?

CLINIC: It just says that you’re old enough to make your own decisions for yourself without involving your parents or legal guardian.

CALLER: Does that always work?

CLINIC: There’s quite a few girls that come here that have the judicial bypass. You’ll have to go in front of a judge. And they can tell you all the information how to go about that and things.

CALLER: How much does it cost?

CLINIC: I don’t know. Let me give you their phone number, and you can call them and find out.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 252-8494. I think at the recording you can just press zero I believe and talk to someone there.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And just tell them that you need information on a judicial bypass.

CALLER: I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys be able to do that there?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. It’s $10. And if you want to come by the office, we can do that.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody about a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: No. We can’t give out any information no matter how old you are.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, my boyfriend, we were talking about this, and he said that he would pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to fill out any papers or anything or have his name on anything if he was paying for it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. All right. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. We could schedule an appointment with you and get your started on something. Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. How much does it cost for birth control?

CLINIC: For an annual exam, which includes the pap smear — the test that’s done once a year that checks for cancer cells of the cervix — it’s going to be around $100.

CALLER: All right. Would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So it’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to go through all this again. So we’re wanting to get birth control.

CLINIC: Do you know where we’re located at?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend does.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come on, and we’ll do the test. And we can just go from there.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s (unclear).

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost to do that?

CLINIC: Well, we do from six-and-a-half to twelve weeks here. Our fee is 500. And then if the individual’s blood type is RH negative, they need a shot afterwards called Rhogam. And that would be $60 more.

CALLER: How do you know if you’re in that time period?

CLINIC: Well, you need to know when your last normal period was.

CALLER: That was January 3rd.

CLINIC: Is that when it started or ended?

CALLER: Started.

CLINIC: That puts you right now about nine weeks.

CALLER: Okay. So it would be 500.

CLINIC: Yes, our fee is 500, and then like I said, 60 for the Rhogam if you needed that.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. He is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to pay for —

CLINIC: No. If you’re under 18, you are required by law to have one of your parents with you or you can use what’s called a judicial bypass, which means you actually petition the court system asking a judge if they’ll grant the permission without having parents involved.

CALLER: Do they usually grant it though?

CLINIC: It depends on age. I mean, if you’re 14, I can’t guarantee that they would.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: I can’t say for sure. That’s up to the judge. You have to talk to the judge is what it amounts to.

CLINIC: Well, do I need like a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: Do I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: No. The court will assign you one. Do you live in Fayette County?

CALLER: I live in Paris.

CLINIC: What you have to do is you have to get a hold of what’s called the juvenile court system within your county, with your area. You might be able to find that located in your phone book. And what it amounts to, you called them and tell them you want to know how to fill out an abortion petition. And they will tell you where to go and how to do it. And you fill out this petition, and they will assign you an attorney. It doesn’t cost you anything. And they will set up an appointment for you to talk to the judge.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And it does is exactly what it’s called. It bypasses the parent.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? The parent isn’t involved. Now, if you can’t do that though, you are required to have one parent with you. And we also are required to have proof that they are the parent.

CALLER: How do you have that?

CLINIC: Well, you have to have your birth certificate, and we have to see their i.d. so that we know they are the parent. Because they have to sign a consent form for you. That goes for anyone under the age of 18.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if the judge said it’s okay, my boyfriend said that he would pay cash for everything. But we don’t want anybody to know about us. Would he have to fill out any forms if he was paying?

CLINIC: No, he doesn’t fill out any forms, no.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, do you guys do like a pregnancy test beforehand just to make sure?

CLINIC: Well, in order to be scheduled with us, you have to have already had some kind of a positive pregnancy test before you call to set up your appointment. And then the day of your appointment when you come in we do an ultra sound on you to make sure.

CALLER: Do you guys do a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We do an ultra sound.

CALLER: I mean, like to make an appointment. Where should I go to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can use those home ones if you want.

CALLER: Oh. Are those usually right?

CLINIC: Those are normally accurate.

CALLER: Really? Okay.

CLINIC: They run about 97-98 percent accurate. So you can use that. Or if you’ve got a local health department or Planned Parenthood, you can go to one of those two places.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would they have to tell anybody if I went there?

CLINIC: Well, they’re not suppose to (chuckle). I don’t have any guarantees on this, but they’re not suppose to, no. But you might want to just consider using the home ones. That way you can do it in the privacy of your home.

CALLER: So if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys? It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to worry about all this anymore.

CLINIC: Well, in order to get birth control through us you would have to have a pap smear. And then they would write a prescription if the doctor doesn’t see a reason you couldn’t take them. And if you live there — where you live, if you check to see if you’ve got a local Planned Parenthood or a local health department, it might be cheaper to go through them.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend gave me your number, and he wanted me to go there to you guys. That’s why I was I calling you.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Well, we don’t sell the pills. All we do is write a prescription, and you have to take it to drug store — a pharmacy — and get it filled.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost to get —

CLINIC: Those pills can run anywhere from 40 to $50 a month.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: That’s why I’m saying, if you go to Planned Parenthood or the health department, a lot of times you can purchase them right from that place at a reduced rate.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: I don’t think you’re required any permission.

CALLER: Okay. So if the judge says it okay, you’re sure that nobody would have to know about me or my boyfriend?

CLINIC: You get a judicial bypass, then nobody is notified.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: But your first step is first take a pregnancy test to find out if you actually are indeed pregnant. At your age, you could just be missing a period; that’s all.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I didn’t know that.

CLINIC: How long have you been having periods?

CALLER: A couple of years.

CLINIC: And have they always been regular?

CALLER: Usually. Well, every once in a while it’s a lighter than normal but not this long.

CLINIC: Well, take a pregnancy test first and see what it turns out to be. And then if it is indeed positive, then like I said, you have to make a decision whether to talk to your folks — one or the other of them, you don’t have to talk to both, you can talk to just one of them — or if you want to try to go after that judicial bypass.

CALLER: I wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you. But could I call you if I had any other questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, anybody that answers the phone here can help you. They really can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, like I was just wondering — like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he like sign whatever my parents would have to do?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No. You’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You probably need to come in here because you’ll have to do what’s called a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Uh-huh. What is that?

CLINIC: It’s where a judge can give you permission without your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does he ever say no or anything?

CLINIC: Not really. I don’t think he ever has.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But it is a legal process that you have to go through if you’re under 18.

CALLER: Do I need like a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: Do you have one?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: I don’t think — but if you do I’m sure they can find you one that work your case for free.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: If you — let’s see. Let me — I don’t know how this is going to work because — can you call back in like an hour and ask for Mary Coleman?

CALLER: Mary Coleman?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: She can maybe set you up an appointment with either her or our supervisor to come in and talk about the judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can bring your boyfriend with you if you want, and then that way you’ll have the knowledge of what you need to do to proceed with whatever.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like if anyone would have to know about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think they’d have to, and it would be probably be better if they didn’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: In the state of Kentucky that’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: What? I don’t understand. What would happen?

CLINIC: It would probably be very bad for him.

CALLER: Like what? What could happen to him?

CLINIC: If your parents found out — do your parents know about him?

CALLER: Well, they just don’t like him, and they know him but —

CLINIC: They don’t know that — do you know you all are sexually active?

CALLER: No, not at all.

CLINIC: Because if they found out and if they didn’t like him enough to where they wanted him to be put in jail, they can accuse him of — I mean, in Kentucky if an adult is having sex with a minor it’s considered statutory rape and he can go to jail.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well, I know that, but I mean that’s just the law. It’s nothing to, you know, hurt you. It’s not trying to hurt you emotionally, but that’s just how the law is written. And if your parents found out they could probably press charges against him.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I came in there for like a pregnancy test, like he’d be the only one that could take me — would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. No. Everything you have done here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. So like after the pregnancy test is if I wasn’t pregnant do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I mean, you’d have to — if you’re not pregnant, you can dome, you can set up an appointment to come in and we have to give you a pap smear, and then we can get you started on birth control pills. So you can do that when you come in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No. We’re not allowed.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just because we have confidentiality rules, so.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I — like when I call back is it okay if I talk to you, or —

CLINIC: I mean, I can tell — I mean, anybody that you talk to here isn’t going to tell anybody else, I mean outside of here. You know what I mean?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Like if you talk to Mary — because the reason why I suggest you talk to her is because she knows more about the judicial bypass than I do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: Tammy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And she’s not going to say anything to anybody just like I’m not going to say anything. You know, we’re not going not call your parents or anything.

I mean, I don’t even know your name, you know? So I’m not going to call your parents if you came in here for a pregnancy test or if your boyfriend came with you we wouldn’t be telling, you know, your parents.

CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody like even — like not my parents?

CLINIC: Right. I mean, we wouldn’t tell anybody. Anything you say between us is just between us.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So.

CALLER: Okay, so just call back in an hour to talk to Mary?

CLINIC: Yeah, just ask for Mary Coleman.

CALLER: Okay.
