CLINIC: Women’s Health Care Services. This is Marguerite.

CALLER: Hi. Can I talk to Jennifer?

CLINIC: May I say who’s calling?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: One moment please.

(Pause)

CLINIC: She is with patients. Is there any way you could try back in about 30 minutes?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Women’s Health Care Services. This is Deborah. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Can I talk to Jennifer, please?

CLINIC: May I ask who’s this?

CALLER: This is Lisa.

CLINIC: Lisa, hold on, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Right now, she is with her supervisor. Can I get a number and have her call you back, or do you want to call her back in 10 minutes? Ten minutes, definitely.

CALLER: I’ll just call back.

CLINIC: Okay. In 10 minutes.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Women’s Health Care Services. This is Cary (sp).

CALLER: Hi. Can I talk to Jennifer, please?

CLINIC: May I tell her who’s calling?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Just a second.

(Pause)

CLINIC: This is Jennifer. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — I called earlier asking questions about getting an abortion. But the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he said that he would pay for everything and take care of everything. Would that be all right, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: The law says we have to.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: And at 14 you’re not of age. Kansas law says that the age of consent for sexual intercourse is 15. So you would have to tell your parents. You’d have to either your mom or your dad.

CALLER: So there’s no way not to have to tell them?

CLINIC: No. You would have to tell them.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any other place I could go?

CLINIC: Not in Kansas.

CALLER: Is there any other state then?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. I think all of them have parental notification laws now.

CALLER: It’s just I can’t tell my parents at all. They’d be furious. I mean, I can’t tell them.

CLINIC: There’s really nothing I can do. Have they threatened to hurt you or anything?

CALLER: No. But they’d be disappointed. I don’t know what they would do, but I know they’d be furious. And I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: The thing I’d have to tell you, as much as it’s going to disappoint them and make them mad, you’re going to have to tell them for the simple fact that he’s 22. He is over 18. And I believe in Kansas that is statutory rape.

CALLER: What? I mean, he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He said he was going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: But he is older than 18. He is not an age mate to you. Because see, you’re a minor. You’re only 14 or 13. And the state of Kansas says that he is an adult and you’re not.

CALLER: So you’re going to have to tell on him?

CLINIC: Me? No. Unless you tell your parents and schedule to have an abortion here, I can’t turn him in.

CALLER: I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to come in there and get one just to make sure before I talk to my parents?

CLINIC: Yes. We can do a pregnancy test for you.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Would you have to tell on my boyfriend for that?

CLINIC: What’s that?

CALLER: Would you have to tell on my boyfriend if I was getting a pregnancy test? Because he would be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: I don’t believe we do.

CALLER: All right. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys. It’s just we don’t want to have to worry about this again.

CLINIC: You can’t get it from us because you won’t be one of our patients, but you can get it from Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: That you’re sexually active? No.

CALLER: All right. Let me think about this. When do you guys normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: Let’s see. We could do one — is there any way that you can just go to the store and get one?

CALLER: Are those usually right though? I would just rather have someone else do it. That way I would know for sure.

CLINIC: They’re 90 percent — well, a 90 percent good rate. There’s like I guess a 5 or 10 percent failure rate on the pregnancy tests, the home ones. But if you’re positive, it’s going to show up on that.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: I think I just would rather come into you guys though, just to be really sure.

CLINIC: You can try a home test. It would be cheaper, and it would be less time consuming than to have to wait a couple of days and then come here.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Yeah. You could try one of those and see if they work.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The best one that I recommend is the EPT.

CALLER: EPT?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right. But you’re sure nobody would have to know if I got birth control or had a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: I’m pretty sure. I don’t think so.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Comprehensive Health. This is Kimberly. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are.

CALLER: How do you know?

CLINIC: We go by the first date of your last period over the phone.

CALLER: That was January 15th.

CLINIC: You’re approximately eight weeks. You’re looking at 375 to 500, depending on what type of sedation you use.

CALLER: Okay. Me and my boyfriend were talking about all his, and he said he would pay cash for everything. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You have to have a parent notification form. Your parent has to take the parent notification form to a notary public and have it notarized. They don’t have to come to your appointment with you, but you have to have the parent notification form notarized by them. Someone 21 or older has to come to your appointment with you. Since your boyfriend is 22, then your parent wouldn’t have to come, but you would have to have the paperwork with their signature and notarized with you.

CALLER: Well, is there any way that I wouldn’t have to tell my parents though?

CLINIC: There is something called judicial bypass. You have to go to court and prove to the judge that you’re capable of your decision and the reason why you feel like you don’t need to tell your parents. And then he would give you some paperwork that you would bring with you to your appointment instead of the parent notification form.

CALLER: I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: No. You just need to go to the court and present to the judge the reason why you feel that your parents don’t need to know about what you’re planning to do.

CALLER: Well, does he usually say it’s okay then?

CLINIC: I have no idea.

CALLER: Would you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand —

CLINIC: No,

CALLER: — just to make sure? Because I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet.

CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests here, but it’s not part of the appointment.

CALLER: How much does it cost then?

CLINIC: Pregnancy test is $18, cash only.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. We just don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying, would he have to sign anything or have his name on any forms?

CLINIC: If he comes with you to your appointment, he’s going to have to sign some forms because since you’re a minor, someone has to go through counseling with you when you come in for your procedure.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know that he was the father?

CLINIC: No. Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: Birth control pills are $17 a pack, Depo shot is 65, and Levonelle is 32. You would have to be seen as a patient here. So you would have to have either a well-woman exam or a Hope exam here. And the exam is $96 plus whatever type of birth control method you’re wanting to get on.

CALLER: And you’re sure no one would have to know about that either?

CLINIC: Everything is confidential here.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just that my boyfriend was really worried about all that. So you’re sure?

CLINIC: Everything is confidential here.

CALLER: Okay. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Yes. My name is Kimberly. I’m here until 4:00 today.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: Anything under 12 weeks is $400 if you are a positive blood type.

CALLER: Okay. How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: Do you know the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: And that was the first day, right?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: Today you’re looking at about nine weeks.

CALLER: Okay. So how much did you say it would be?

CLINIC: Four hundred dollars if you’re a positive blood type.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Oh, no. In the state of Kansas we have to have parent consent.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: There is such a thing called judicial bypass, although we don’t mess with that here in our clinic. You could call over to Dr. Tiller’s (ph) clinic, and maybe they could help you with that.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Are you calling from Wichita?

CALLER: I’m in Leon.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 1-800-882-0488.

CALLER: What was the last four, 882 what?

CLINIC: 882-0488.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to come in there for that?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell my parents then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Five dollars.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So it would be all right if my boyfriend was there with me for that?

CLINIC: Sure. Sure.

CALLER: But if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Not without consent.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm. You could go to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. So just call this other doctor guy?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Yeah. And just ask him about the — first I’d find out if I was pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. So I could come in to you guys? When do you guys normally do that?

CLINIC: On Wednesdays.

CALLER: On Wednesday? What time on Wednesday?

CLINIC: For the procedure or —

CALLER: The pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Anytime.

CALLER: What are your hours?

CLINIC: 9 and 4.

CALLER: Tomorrow too?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: All right. Well, I’ve got to call my boyfriend and see. But if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does is cost for that?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are.

CALLER: How do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: We go by the first day of your last period over the phone.

CALLER: Okay. Well, that was January 3rd.

CLINIC: So you’re approximately eight to nine weeks. You’re looking at 375 to 500, depending on what type of sedation you choose.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Do you have your 24-hour consent packet?

CALLER: My what?

CLINIC: Twenty-four hour consent packet.

CALLER: No, I don’t know what that is.

CLINIC: You will need to pick that up before you can schedule your appointment. You can pick it up at your local Planned Parenthood. It is required by Kansas state law that you have that packet in your possession 24 hours prior to your appointment. If you don’t have that 24-hour consent form signed, dated and time filled out correctly, by Kansas state law we will not be able to see you, and you’ll have to reschedule.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Where are you located?

CALLER: I’m in Lawrence.

CLINIC: Do you know where the Planned Parenthood is in Lawrence?

CALLER: My boyfriend does.

CLINIC: You just need to go there and pick up the 24-hour consent packet. Once you receive it, then give us a call, and we can schedule your appointment. We do the procedures Wednesday through Saturday, a.m. appointments only.

CALLER: Okay. What time on Saturday?

CLINIC: We only have morning appointments. They start at 8 and they go up to 10:30.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Since you are a minor you will have to have a parent notification form. Your parent will need to take it to a notary public and have it notarized. Now, if you don’t want your parents to know, you would need to go to court and have a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Do I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: No, you don’t need a lawyer. You just have to prove to the judge that you’re capable of your decision. And you just have to prove to him the reason why you feel like you shouldn’t have to tell your parents. If you do decide to do that, then you’ll need to bring that paperwork that he gives you with you to your appointment. And then someone 21 or older has to come with you to your appointment if your parents aren’t going to be involved in it. Someone 21 or older has to come.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is that all right if he’s there?

CLINIC: Yeah. He needs to be bring a picture i.d.

CALLER: Do you know if the judges usually says yes?

CLINIC: I don’t know. It depends on where you go and what the judge — it depends on what you tell the judge, what the reason is you’re telling the judge why you feel like you shouldn’t have to tell your parent.

CALLER: Okay. My parents would be furious if they found out that we were having sex, so they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, that’s the only other option you would have, is to get the judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I don’t think there’s a charge for that. You’ll need to call the court I guess in your area and ask them do they charge a fee, and what the hours are, and stuff like that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant after getting a pregnancy test, would I be able to get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yeah. Birth control you can get without a parent consent.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: The thing is, I can’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: If you send him with a note stating that he can pick up your pills. You will need to be seen here as a patient though before we can give you any pills. You would need to have an exam here. Then they will give you a refill for a year’s worth of pills. If you want him to pick up your pills, you would have to send him with a note when he comes to pick your pills up or call us and let us know beforehand so we can write that down. And then he’ll just have to show i.d. when he comes to pick it up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Are you pregnant or you’re not sure?

CALLER: Well, I just haven’t had a period for a while, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests here. They’re $18 cash only. It’s done a walk-in basis. You can just walk in and have it done. Tomorrow they start at 11:00. They have clinic until 6, if you want to come in and do that first.

CALLER: Well, do I need an appointment for that?

CLINIC: No. It’s on a walk-in basis. You’ll be worked in between patients. And they do go to lunch tomorrow between 2 and 3, so you can come between 11 and 2 or 3 and 6.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Drs. Saudes (?) and Nauser (?). Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Do you have insurance?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Of course, it depends on how far along you are. The cash discount cost up to 12 weeks is $350 if you have a positive blood type; $450 if you have a negative.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you know information for greater than 12 weeks?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. What you need to do is, if it’s something you’re considering, you need to pick up the Kansas consent form. And you can either pick them up in our office or we can mail them to you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want us to do that?

CALLER: Well, I’d just come by your office and get it. But the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: Yes. Your parents would have to come with you.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: No. It has to be a legal guardian. And they would have to bring a picture i.d. Can you hold just a second?

CALLER: All right.

RECORDING: — over the age of 18 have a gynecologic exam once every year.

CLINIC: You would have to have a legal guardian, and they have to have a picture i.d. If your names don’t match on the picture i.d.s, both of your names, then you have to bring a paper trail showing me why it’s not the same. Like if there’s been a divorce or a marriage or something showing me why your names don’t match.

CALLER: Well, I can’t tell my parents at all. Is there anything else that I could do so that they don’t find out?

CLINIC: You maybe can contact Comprehensive Health. Sometimes they can use the judicial bypass, but that’s nothing that our office can do. Okay?

CALLER: How do you do a judicial bypass?

CLINIC: I don’t know the whole procedure, but if you call them — do you want their number?

CALLER: Sure, yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 913-345-1400, and they may be able to help you.

CALLER: Can I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: You can go to either one of ours.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So I don’t need my parents to be there to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. Okay?

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Can you hold just a moment?

CALLER: All right.

(Short pause)

CLINIC: Okay. It’s $10 cash for that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Not without your parents, but you can at Planned Parenthood, which is Comprehensive Health.

CALLER: Oh. So they wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Hayes Planned Parenthood. This is Jandy.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No. We don’t.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Yes. Let me tell you — look in the phone book in the yellow pages, and look under — hold on. I’ll have to look for you. It’s under “abortion providers.”

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And there’s two different ones in there, and they have 800 numbers in there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: It’s just I’m worried because my friend told me that — well, I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. If you’re under 18 you have to have parents’ consent.

CALLER: Oh, is there — do you know of any way that I wouldn’t have to tell my parents? Because I don’t know what would happen if my parents found out.

CLINIC: The only way would be like through the court systems. If you want and got emancipated.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But I — that’s a long, drawn-out process. But, yeah, if you’re under 18 you have to — I know if you go to Wichita you have to have a parents’ consent.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test? I’m just scared because like my last period was December 14. So.

CLINIC: Sure. We’ll be here until 3:00 if you’d like to come down and get one.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but if it wasn’t — like if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: We sure do.

CALLER: Would it be all right if like my boyfriend was there with me? Because I would just feel better if he was there with me.

CLINIC: No, that’s not a problem. He can come down here with us. Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you guys do decide to do it today as long as you’re here before 3:00 we can get all that taken care of.

CALLER: Well, it’s just — we were talking about it, and we just decided that we didn’t want anybody to know about us. Would you guys have to ask any questions or anything or have him sign anything?

CLINIC: No, it would all be around you. Everything down here is strictly confidential. Here we can, here in our office we can serve, like give services to minors without anybody knowing, like parents, anybody.

CALLER: So if the pregnancy test was negative and I was on birth control you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. Not at all.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well —

CLINIC: How old did you say you were?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. But yeah, no, nothing down here, nothing. Parents don’t know, nothing like that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right — like it’s just I don’t drive yet. But could my boyfriend pick up the, like the birth control if I had that? Because I wouldn’t have any way to pick it up.

CLINIC: If you actually came down here and got the pregnancy test and it was negative, we’d still actually have to see you. Like if you did do it today we could do all of it — like get you a pap smear and have the nurse review your system, our health systems and everything, and then we could get you some pills. For me, there on out, yeah, if you call and tell me that he’s coming in to pick them up, that’s not a problem. Not a problem at all.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right? Let me — you decide what you want to do, and if you want to come down today we’ll be here until 3:00. If not, and you want to just make an appointment — otherwise, give me a call back and we’ll get you taken care of.

CALLER: Well, your name was Jan? Or what’s your name?

CLINIC: Jandy. Like Candy but with a J.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: It is — is Wichita long distance from you?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. It is 684-5108.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like — I’m just worried because my friend told me that since like — well, I’ll be 14 in March and she said that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just handle that and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I wouldn’t know that. You might call their office and ask them, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yeah, you sure could.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I’m — the reason why I’m worried about all this is because like my last period was December 14, and I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Oh, well, I can understand that. Um, when would you want to come in?

CALLER: Well, I’m not sure really. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see when he could get off work. What time do you —

CLINIC: We stop seeing patients at 4:00 today.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, is it all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: It sure is.

CALLER: That would be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, it sure is. And we’re open tomorrow from 8:30 to 12:30 if you want to come in tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, we were talking about it and we were not wanting — we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know about all this, so would you guys have to tell anybody about us, or —

CLINIC: No. No. We’re completely confidential. We don’t even share information with other Planned Parenthood clinics without a signed consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. We can give you that without your parents’ knowing too.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, would it be all right if like since my boyfriend, since I can’t drive, could my boyfriend pick up like the birth control pills, or —

CLINIC: At that time — you’ll have to see the nurse. What we’ll do is, we’ll set you up an appointment for birth control. And we’ll do a pap smear which is a screening for cancer, and she’ll explain all of that to you and how it’s done. And then she’ll set you up on what kind of birth control you want, and then if it’s more convenient for him to pick them up for you, yeah, we can put that in the computer and he’ll be able to pick them up. You’ll just order that, and he can pick them up.

CALLER: Okay. So if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Holly.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Comprehensive Health. This is Kimberly. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: It ranges from 375 to 2,250 —

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: — depending on how far along you are and what type of anesthesia you get.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: They do a sonogram when you come in for your procedure. We can give you an estimate over the phone by going by the first day of your last period.

CALLER: That was like December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on. December 14th?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So you’re approximately 10 weeks, maybe a little less than that. The cost of the procedure is 375 to 500, up to 11.4 weeks. The price difference depends on what type of anesthesia you’re wanting. We offer three types of anesthesia. There’s local where you’re awake, and it’s 375. There’s contra sedation where you’re in a twilight sleep. It’s 450. And then there’s light general where you’re totally asleep, and it’s 500.

CALLER: Okay. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever papers there are?

CLINIC: You’re how old?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No. Your parents would have to fill out a guardian notification form since you are a minor. Your boyfriend cannot sign it for you even though he is over 21.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents? They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: You can get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: You have to go through court and stand in front of a judge and tell him the reason why you feel like you’re capable of making your own decision without your parents knowing about it.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t think it cost anything. I could have you talk to a counselor, and they could explain it to you better about the judicial bypass.

CALLER: Well, should I come in there for a pregnancy test first?

CLINIC: If you already know you’re pregnant, then you don’t need to take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure. I just know that I missed my period, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if you’ve had a missed period that’s probably an indication that you are pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, you can come in and get one done. It’s $18 cash only. But it’s the same thing that you would get at the store. It’s a urine test.

CALLER: I would just rather have it done there so that I know it’s done right.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you come in this afternoon?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. But I really wanted him to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: He can come with you. He can’t go back when you’re back in the back talking with the nurse.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But pregnancy tests are done on a walk-in basis. You can just walk in. Today they’re open until 6. You can come in from 3 to 6 today.

CALLER: He’s really worried. He doesn’t want anyone to know about him. Would you guys be asking a lot of questions?

CLINIC: Well, that just depends on if you want to talk to a counselor or not. You need to talk to a counselor about judicial bypass, and they’re probably going to want to know some information. But everything is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control or anything?

CLINIC: You can talk with the nurse if you’re wanting to get on birth control. She can discuss those options with you also.

CALLER: But does she have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, she doesn’t have to tell — you don’t need a parent/guardian notification to get on birth control.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Is it all right if my boyfriend comes to pick it up? Because I can’t drive. I’m not old enough to drive.

CLINIC: Is it okay what now?

CALLER: Is it okay if he could pick up the pills?

CLINIC: You would have to send him with a note or either call and let us know first that he’s coming to pick them up.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call him and then call you back? What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Kimberly. But if you want to get on birth control, you would have to be seen as a patient here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So you would have to have an appointment. But if you just want to come in and get a pregnancy test, you can just walk in and get that done today, after 3 but before 6:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’ll call him. Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
