TAPE – 825

(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Women’s Pavillion.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Well, we offer two different kinds. Which kind were you interested in?

CALLER: I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: We have the surgery. We go up to 12 weeks with that. It’s $470. You might take 70 of that home if you don’t need a shot of Rhogam or a blood pregnancy test. And then we also have the French abortion pill, which is 600. And you can’t be more than 60 days from the first day of your last normal period with that.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far you are?

CLINIC: Well, you’ve got to know when the first day of your last menstrual period was.

CALLER: January 10th.

CLINIC: January 10th?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Well, you should be okay with that. Do you live in the area?

CALLER: Well, I got this number from a number person that I called, and they told me to call you guys.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But I’m in Indianapolis.

CLINIC: You’re in Indianapolis?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You’re too far, honey. Because it would mean three trips back here.

(Talking to someone else) Are we letting them come from Indie?

Nope. You’re too far, hon.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would bring me and pay for everything.

CLINIC: No, I know that. But you have to make three trips back here.

(Someone talking in the background)

CLINIC: She said you’re too far in the pregnancy. You’re more than the 60 days from the first day of your last normal period.

CALLER: So I couldn’t do the surgical one.

CLINIC: No, that’s what she said. No, you can do the surgical one; you can’t do the chemical one.

CALLER: Okay. So how much does it cost for the surgical one?

CLINIC: 470.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Are you interested in doing that?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Just a minute, please.

(Talking to someone else) Hi.

CALLER: Hello?

CLINIC: Yes?

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I’m talking to someone, and then I’m trying to talk to you too.

So it was January 10th. Do you want to make an appointment right now?

CALLER: Well, I need to call my boyfriend to see. But the thing is, my main concern is I’m going to be 14 later on this month —

CLINIC: Oh, honey. If you’re 14, you need a parental consent.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, you can go to Illinois, and you don’t need parental consent. But in Indiana, you have to have a parent’s consent.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, no, no. We’re not going to break the law, honey.

CALLER: Well, like if I went to the other —

CLINIC: No. You can go to Illinois where it’s not against the law.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody in Illinois?

CLINIC: In Illinois it isn’t against the law. Let me give you the number. It’s called Family Planning Associates, 1-800-541-0356.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Call them. And you don’t need to have your parents sign when you go there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test just to make sure though?

CLINIC: Oh, you can go for a pregnancy test anywhere, honey. You don’t have to drive all the way from Indie to here. Just go to the drug store and buy one.

CALLER: Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Or you can go to — they have like those crisis pregnancy places where usually you can get them for free. Just look them up in the phone book.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And once you find out what the results are, you can take it from there.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Why would you want to drive all this way? Just go to Planned Parenthood, honey.

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend said to go there.

CLINIC: No. Go to Planned Parenthood. You’re going to be driving two-and-a-half hours to get birth control? All you have to do is look up in the phone book to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: But would anybody have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Your parents don’t need to know for birth control.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So there’s no sense in you driving all this way.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything. But if he was paying, would he have to fill out any forms or have his name on anything? Like we don’t want anybody to know about us.

CLINIC: Well, I’ll tell you right now, he’s breaking the law. You know that.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: He’s breaking the law.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because you’re under age, honey, and he’s 22.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That’s considered rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I know, honey. But they call it statutory rape. So I would not tell anybody that. You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But call Planned Parenthood. They can help you with birth control. You don’t need to drive five hours to get birth control.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Just look in the phone book under Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: I wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you.

CLINIC: Yeah. I wish you could too, honey.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Judy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, honey.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that would?

CLINIC: Um-hmm. Let me give you a number, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s — oh Lord, hold on. Because you know what? My brain just went dead– 272-1010, right here in South Bend.

CALLER: I’m just worried. I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that you guys have to have my parents sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign it?

CLINIC: Honey, you’d have to ask them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Because I don’t know.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: I’d rather you — well —

CALLER: My friend just told me to go to you guys.

CLINIC: Do you know for sure you’re pregnant?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: How late are you for your period?

CALLER: Well, my last one was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Let’s get you in for a pregnancy test because you’re running out of time if you want an abortion.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: How about tomorrow 8:45 in the morning?

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend to see.

CLINIC: Why don’t you call him to see what time is best for you tomorrow to come in here, and then call me back.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if he comes in with me?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: If the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys have birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, but you’d have to make another appointment for that.

CALLER: But if I was on birth control, you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about it?

CLINIC: That’s right.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Are you there?

CLINIC: Yeah. Tomorrow we have 8:45 or in the afternoon. So just call him, and then call me back.

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: Bobbie.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
