CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We refer to our Planned Parenthood office in Indianapolis, and then after surgery if you want to come here locally for your three weeks checkup and for birth control we can do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Their number is 1-800-352-1901.

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: I have a lot of questions. But like I’m just worried because like my friend told me that since I’m going to be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, the clinic people can help you work through that. So you can call and talk to them about it and see what they recommend.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Um-hum. You sure can. There’s not a charge. We do have to have your Social Security number when you come in.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a Social Security number.

CLINIC: Oh, you have to have. If you were born in the United States, you have a Social Security number.

CALLER: Oh. Well –

CLINIC: So we’ll need your Social Security number when you come in. Come when you have about 45 minutes. There’s not a charge for the test, and we just ask —

CALLER: Well, were could I find my Social Security number?

CLINIC: Well, I have no idea where you keep it. That’s your private business.

CALLER: I mean, I don’t work. I don’t have a Social —

CLINIC: If — were you born in the United States?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You have a Social Security number, and you need to bring that number with you when you come in. Come when you have about 45 minutes, and you can come in today before 4:00.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?

CLINIC: Sure. He can sit in the waiting room.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just he said that he would pay for everything, and we were talking about —

CLINIC: There’s not a charge for this test. You just have to bring your Social Security number. When you have 45 minutes come in today before 4:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know about us though? Would you guys have to ask anything about him?

CLINIC: We’ll take your medical history when you come in just like we do for every patient. We need medical information. All right. Thank you.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant after the pregnancy test, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: We can talk about it. You know, it’s not fair to you to be playing all these what-if games. Come in for the test, we’ll go from there.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I have to go. I have another patient.

CALLER: Well, if I had other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Whoever answers the phone can help you. I have to go now.

CALLER: All right.
