CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, not at this site. But I can give you a number if you’d like.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay? Hold on just a moment.
(Pause)
CLINIC: Are you ready?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: It’s 1-800-352-1901.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Have you already been confirmed pregnant?
CALLER: No. Do you guys do that there?
CLINIC: Yeah. I can do the confirmation, and you have to have that before you go.
CALLER: Okay. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to do that?
CLINIC: Like I said, all I can do is pregnancy confirmation. Other than that, I don’t know anything about it.
CALLER: Do you have to have my parents sign anything for that?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Not for just the pregnancy test.
CALLER: So you guys don’t have to tell anybody that I’m getting a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: That’s correct.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?
CLINIC: That’s completely fine. You’re basically going to be in the waiting room the whole time anyway. So yeah, that’s fine, no big deal.
CALLER: Would he have to sign anything or anything saying that he’s there with me?
CLINIC: Ummmmm — can you hold just a second and I’ll check?
CALLER: Yeah.
(Pause)
CLINIC: Are you there?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Actually, because of your age and his age — and I hate to say this, but we would have to report you.
CALLER: Who would you have to report me to? What do you mean?
CLINIC: You said you were 14, right?
CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Okay. So you’re actually 13 right now and he’s 22, right?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: That’s statutory rape.
CALLER: What is that? What do you mean? He’s not raping me.
CLINIC: I know. I understand that. But by our Planned Parenthood guidelines because of your age and his age, we would have to report you to the state of Indiana.
CALLER: What could I do? I don’t want him to go to jail.
CLINIC: Right, I understand that. But I’m just telling you by our protocol, if you come in here for anything, we have to report you to the state of Indiana.
CALLER: So what could I do then?
CLINIC: I have no idea. I don’t know what your avenues are from there. I’m just explaining to you what I can do.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: So you can come in here and get the confirmation for a positive pregnancy, but if you come in here I have to report you to the state of Indiana.
CALLER: Well, I can’t do that at all.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, then I’m sorry.
CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there for birth control?
CLINIC: Because you’ve already told me your partner is 22, we would still have to report you.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: That’s what I’m saying. If you come in here at all, period, we’re going to have to report you because you’re 14 and he’s 22.
CALLER: Well, is there like a different Planned Parenthood that I could go to?
CLINIC: All of the Planned Parenthood protocols are the exact same. No matter where you go, they would have to report you to the state of Indiana.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: That’s why I wanted to check because I wanted to give you a little heads up to let you know. Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome (chuckle).
CALLER: If I took a home pregnancy test, do you think that those are accurate or anything?
CLINIC: They are accurate, yes. But if you need any other services, whether it be abortion, adoption or keeping the baby after that, you would have to have a positive, confirmed pregnancy test from a doctor.
CALLER: From a doctor?
CLINIC: Or from your doctor, right.
CALLER: Could I get birth control there? Like if the home pregnancy test was negative, could I come in there and get birth control?
CLINIC: You would have to come in and have an exam and get your birth control that way. But like I said, we’d have to report you to the state of Indiana.
CALLER: Even for birth control?
CLINIC: Yes, for anything. Anytime we find out an under-age person is having sex with an older person of that age group, we have to report it to the state of Indiana.
CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March. Does that make any difference?
CLINIC: It has to be under the age of 16. So you’re below by several years.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really scared and I don’t know what to do.
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: Could I call and talk to you again?
CLINIC: Sure, no problem.
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Maureen. And I’m the only one here besides the nurse.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.
