CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. You would have to contact the Champaign Planned Parenthood for that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Certainly. Do you have a pen ready?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 217-359-8022, and you just ask for surgical services.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a real quick question?

CLINIC: What’s that?

CALLER: It’s just I’m scared because like, well my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion but —

CLINIC: That’s not true.

CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Could he —

CLINIC: That is not true.

CALLER: — do that?

CLINIC: Illinois is one of the last states that does not require parental consent, so it doesn’t matter. They cannot and will not tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have absolutely nothing to worry about. I mean, of course you need somebody to take you. They advise that you have somebody to drive you home. So your boyfriend can take you, no problem. And your parents will never know. You do not have to worry about that. Your friend was wrong.

CALLER: Okay. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though? It’s just I’m scared because like my last period was like December 14, so I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you can come in here, but unless you have a medical card, the cost is $18.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay, well, you can come on in here. There’s no problem.

CALLER: When do you guys normally do them?

CLINIC: I’m here today until 4:00. I’m going to leave about 15 minutes at lunch. Otherwise, I’ll be here all day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can come in any time.

CALLER: What about tomorrow?

CLINIC: I’m only open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know? Just to let you know, you know the tests out at Walmart and drugstores are just as accurate as ours.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Where you just, you know, basically you just pee on the stick. They’re all very accurate now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you just want to go out to Walmart and grab one and pay $6 instead of $18, they are very accurate and you don’t have to use them just first thing in the morning. And as far as you, you know, are past when you were supposed to get your period, if it’s going to turn, it will probably turn positive right away with no mistake.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you are. As long as it’s been. So if you want to save yourself some money, I would just say, you know, go to Walmart and take a test.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out to be negative, could I come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: You can make an appointment with me and set up. You know, you have to set up an appointment to be seen, you know, for an exam, and then we can get you started on birth control no problem.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: That’s how — you know, we look at it this way. If you’re old enough to have sex, you’re old enough, you know, to of course come in here and be covered so that this doesn’t happen.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Because you are way too young for a child.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That would pose serious health risks at your age. You’re too young.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So anyway, you need to find out if you’re pregnant first and get that taken care of —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — before you come in here for birth control because we won’t see you if you’re pregnant in here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So take a test and get your appointment scheduled in Champaign.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And then call me back when everything’s taken care of. You can even come for your — if you are pregnant and you do have the termination, you can come for your post-check here because I belong to Champaign.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So all’s you’d have to do is call me back and say, you know, I had a termination in Champaign, and I need a post-check, and then we’ll get you all squared away that way.

CALLER: Okay. So what’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Roxanne.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, and incidentally I also work in Champaign.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So anywhere you go you’re going to be stuck with me. So figure out what you want to do and call me back and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
