TAPE – 840

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Northern Illinois Women’s Center. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. This is in Illinois?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. I talked to the Planned Parenthood in Wisconsin, and they gave me this number. I was actually wondering if I could get an abortion.

CLINIC: Yeah. Can I put you on hold just a minute?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: And your last name?

CALLER: Carter.

CLINIC: Carter?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Birthday?

CALLER: March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: What city do you live in?

CALLER: I live in Rockford.

CLINIC: A daytime phone number where you could be reached?

CALLER: Well, I don’t want to tell you. Actually, my boyfriend was going to get a cell phone to use that, but he just got it today, and I don’t have the number yet.

CLINIC: Okay. Well —

CALLER: But I was actually wanting to ask a question.

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would pay cash for everything. Would he be able to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’m going to have to check. Can I put you on hold?

CALLER: Okay.

(Short pause)

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Basically, everything here is confidential. But as far as the legality of it, I’m not sure. But you know what? It’s going to be the same place wherever you go. So if you want — if I did have a number to call you, it would come up private on the caller i.d. I’d just leave my name and a number. And the number that I leave we only answer hello to.

CALLER: Okay. Well, me and my boyfriend are really worried about all this. We were talking about it, and he said he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. So if he was paying for it all, would he have to sign any papers or have his name on any forms?

CLINIC: No, only you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys be able to do that there beforehand?

CLINIC: Yeah, we do that with everybody. But my suggestion is that you do take a test, like a home pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: Yeah. They’re 99. whatever percent effective. That’s what we use here to make sure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: Actually, it wouldn’t cost anything for the prescription, but you’d have to pay for it at the pharmacy. You would have to pay for counseling and an exam by the doctor if it turns out that you are not pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much is that then?

CLINIC: That’s $80. And if he does a sonogram, that’s 130.

CALLER: But if I was pregnant and I needed to get an abortion, how much would that be?

CLINIC: That $350. If your blood type is RH negative, which we check everybody, it’s 400.

CALLER: Okay. So you’re sure that you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about me and my boyfriend though if we came in there?

CLINIC: I’m not — but as far as because of your age difference, is that what it is?

CALLER: I don’t know, yeah.

CLINIC: Well, I’m not sure. I don’t know. I mean, you could give me a call back tomorrow after I talk to the doctor.

CALLER: Well, would it be better if I just didn’t talk about my boyfriend and he just dropped me off?

CLINIC: It’s really entirely up to you. I don’t know. We do have to know some information.

CALLER: Well, do you have to know about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Nothing. About you. Do your parents even know at all?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Do your parents know at all?

CALLER: Well, they know we’re going out. He works with my dad. But they don’t know we’re having sex. If they found out about that, they’d be furious. They can’t find out at all. I mean, I don’t know — they just can’t find out.

CLINIC: I mean, he has nothing to do with this. But you have to (?) yourself. It has everything to do with you. We don’t require any information about him at all. I mean, we do ask who you came with, but all you have to say is my boyfriend.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what time are you guys open tomorrow?

CLINIC: We’ll be open 8 to 4:30 if you want to give a call back. My suggestion is call in the afternoon. If you want you can make an appointment. It’s really up to you.

Have you ever been to a gynecologist?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You’ve never had a pelvic exam?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, just give me a call back tomorrow. My name’s Michele.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If I don’t hear from the doctor by the time I talk to you, I’ll call him and maybe have you call me back during the same day or at some point, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye.

CLINIC: Accessed Health Center. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: That’s one of our services.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Was that normal?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you have insurance?

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. And he said he would pay for everything. But is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You have insurance, but it’s in your parents’ name.

CALLER: No. By boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. But you are a student. You are under your parents’ care and your parents have insurance. But you don’t want your parents to know. That’s what I’m trying to find out right now.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Do you have a school i.d. or a class schedule?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Are you working at all?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But my boyfriend said he’d pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: That’s fine. I don’t care about him right now. I’m trying to worry about you.

CALLER: Okay. Why?

CLINIC: Why? Because you’re the one that’s getting it done; he’s not.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Between 6 and 12 weeks in gestation, that’s $390. If the ultra sound says that you are between 12.1 and 14 weeks, it’s $525.

CALLER: So where am I?

CLINIC: Well, you could be either place right now. You’re kind of in between. We won’t know until the ultra sound. Do you know your blood type?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Do you have MVP or a heart murmur?

CALLER: Not that I know of.

CLINIC: If you are RH negative, we have to give you a shot of Rhogam. And that happens every time that you are pregnant. And that will be an additional $50. The only other thing that would increase the fee is you can buy your medications from us. There are two that you have to start taking afterwards. One is called tetracycline, and that’s an antibiotic to keep infection away. The other one is called Methergine, and that will help make your uterus go back to its normal size, and it also helps control your bleeding a little bit. And we charge 24 for both of them.

CALLER: Well, me and boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for it all, would he have to fill out any forms?

CLINIC: No. You’re the one’s doing the surgery.

CALLER: So his name wouldn’t have to be on anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. All right. He was just kind of worried about that.

But I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do one of those before you get started with —

CLINIC: You need to do one before you come in. Because it’s not even worth coming in if you’re not pregnant. You can stop in and do one here if you want to, but it’s not worth making an appointment until you know that you are pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost to get a pregnancy where you’re at?

CLINIC: It’s free.

CALLER: Really? Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You have to have a full exam and all of that. We don’t just give out birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for the exam?

CLINIC: Approximately $120.

CALLER: And after that I could get birth control, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you’re sure that no one has to know anything about any of this?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. All right. I just have so many questions, and I’m just really worried. But if I thought of anything else to ask, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, my name is Jody. But anybody that answers the phone will be able to answer any of your questions about termination.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Because that’s what we’re all suppose to know.

CALLER: Do you know if I got a pregnancy test at a store would that be as good as the one you guys do or is yours better?

CLINIC: Only if you use your first morning urine, which means you have to do it the first thing when you get up in the morning. And what that first morning urine means is that anytime from the time that you go to bed to the first time that you wake up. So for any reason you woke up in the middle of the night and had to use the bathroom, that’s your first morning urine.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So that’s the one that’s the most concentrated, and that’s going to give you your best result. If you use one of the home tests, you have to read the test at the time that they tell you to. Because sometimes if you let them sit too long, it can go from negative to positive. Don’t know why. So you need to read it at the time that the test tells you to read it at.

CALLER: Oh. It just sounds like it would be easier to go to you guys for that. When do you normally do that, the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We’re open everyday, except for Sunday.

CALLER: What are your hours?

CLINIC: Do you have an idea when you’ll be coming? Because they’re different everyday.

CALLER: Oh. It will probably be like the morning on Saturday I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come between 10 and 2.

CALLER: On Saturday?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Do I need to —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: No, you do not need to make an appointment. You just come in anytime between 10 and 2 on Saturday.

CALLER: Do I need to bring my first morning urine for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And try not to drink tons of fluids before you get here, because you don’t want your urine diluted.

CALLER: All right. So I can come in this Saturday?

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then if it is a positive test, then we can possibly go ahead and get you scheduled for an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Yes. Can you hold please?

CALLER: All right.

(Short pause)

CLINIC: May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was calling to ask questions about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Do you know how much they cost?

CLINIC: Are you a student or on public A?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 320 to be asleep or 270 awake. And that’s from 6 to 12 weeks.

CALLER: My main thing I’m worried about is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Your boyfriend doesn’t have to sign for anything. You sign.

CALLER: Oh. So my parents don’t have to know?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really? Okay. Me and boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay for everything with cash. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No. You have to fill out your paperwork. Your boyfriend, all he has to do is pay.

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys do a pregnancy test there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: That’s free.

CALLER: Oh, really? Okay. When do you guys do pregnancy tests? How soon could I get that?

CLINIC: You can come Monday through Friday between 9 and 4.

CALLER: Do I need an appointment for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Would it be all right if I came on my boyfriend’s lunch break?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Would it be okay to come like during lunch, when my boyfriend gets off of work for lunch?

CLINIC: As long as it’s between 9 and 4.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Then you have to see a doctor, make an appointment to see the doctor.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It’s $85.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. No, we don’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: Okay. I just wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you, but she just doesn’t understand anything. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Laurie.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I come in tomorrow for a pregnancy test and birth control?

CLINIC: That’s fine. Well, not birth control. For birth control, you have to make an appointment ahead of time. Why don’t you come in for the pregnancy test, and then we’ll go from there.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: National Health Care. This is Pam. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Well, under 12 weeks it’s $350, and then 12 to 14 weeks, it’s 450.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: We go by the first day of your last normal period when we make your appointment, but then we do a sonogram when you come in. When was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you’re probably not that far along. Let me look here. We’re making appointments right now for next Wednesday, which is the 13th. And you’d be approximately nine weeks, so it would be 350. Even if you’d wait until the 20th or 21st, you’re still at that 350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now do you know of your blood type is negative?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: Well, we tell you to bring an extra $30, because if your blood type is negative — and we do that typing here — then it’s $30 extra for something called Rhogam shot.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, first of all, you don’t have to have parents’ consent in Illinois, so that’s no problem. Only you have to sign the papers.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And everything is confidential, hon.

CALLER: Oh, good. So it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we didn’t want anyone to know about us. But he said he was going to pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: Yeah, you have to pay cash anyway, cash or money order. So whenever you’re ready to make the appointment, just give us a call.

CALLER: Well, if he was paying for everything, would he have to sign any papers or fill out any forms?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. You only fill out the forms. And the receipt is made out to you because you’re the patient.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that before?

CLINIC: No. You need to get a pregnancy test done first. Just do an at-home test or whatever.

CALLER: Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yeah, pretty much. And then once you get that result, then you give us a call and we’ll set up an appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: No, we don’t do long-term care. We just give you one pack of pills after you leave to regulate the period. You have to go to Planned Parenthood or something to get the birth control pill.

CALLER: Would they have to tell if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: I don’t know. What city do you live in?

CALLER: I live in Farmington.

CLINIC: So you’d go to what, Peoria’s?

CALLER: I think so, yeah.

CLINIC: Peoria Planned Parenthood I meant.

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Call them and ask them. I don’t think they do.

CALLER: Okay. How much should I bring if I was getting an abortion?

CLINIC: How much what?

CALLER: How much money should I bring if I was getting an abortion?

CLINIC: 380.

CALLER: Okay. And an additional $30?

CLINIC: No, no. It’s 350 for the procedure and $30 extra for a Rhogam shot. So it would be 380 or 350. But we tell you to bring 380 just in case your blood type’s negative, okay?

CALLER: Would my boyfriend be able to come in with me?

CLINIC: He can go through the counseling with you but not through the procedure. You’re with the doctor and the nurse then.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you’re sure nobody would have to know about anything?

CLINIC: Only if you tell somebody?

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: A lot of patients get angry at us, because when they make their appointment they forget what time it is. And they’ll call us, and we can’t even tell them because we don’t know that’s them. We’re here to protect you and take good care of you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: The Hope Clinic. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Hold on just a moment, ma’am.

(Pause)

RECORDING: At Hope Clinic we take extra care to ensure that your total experience is a positive one. You’ll receive lots of personal attention from our warm and caring staff. Our beautiful new building has a soothing, comfortable atmosphere. We provide abortion care at its finest.

The fee for an abortion at Hope Clinic includes an ultra sound, lab work, individual counseling, antibiotics to prevent infection, aroma therapy to aid relaxation, and medication for effective pain relief. Thank you for holding. We’ll be right with you.

Women and their doctors have counted on Hope Clinic for high —

CLINIC: Okay. Did you have some questions, hon?

CALLER: Yeah. I was calling to see about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. How far along are you, hon?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure, but my last period was January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: I need you to have a pregnancy test before you call us, hon.

CALLER: So I do I come in there for that?

CLINIC: You call us back to schedule your appointment.

CALLER: But where do I get a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Go to Walgreen’s to have one done, a hospital. You just need to confirm that you’re pregnant, hon.

CALLER: So the ones in the store are usually right though?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Go to Walgreens and get an EPT and just call us back, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost to get an abortion?

CLINIC: Hold on just a second.

(Pause)

CLINIC: From 4 to 11 weeks of pregnancy —

(Talking to someone else) I just need you to sign this blue sheet for me, hon. Oh, it’s hard for you to do it.

From 4 to 11 weeks it’s $355 for the surgical abortion and an additional $30 if you’re a negative blood type.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is that I’m really worried because I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We’re not going to tell anybody. There’s no parental consent in the state of Illinois and there’s no age.

CALLER: Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything in cash. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: Well, when you schedule your appointment, hon, we’re going to ask you for your address and your phone number and your Social Security number and stuff like that, but it’s strictly confidential. It doesn’t ever leave this office.

CALLER: So there’s nothing that he has to fill out?

CLINIC: There’s nothing that he has to fill out at all. But you do need to have your payment for a money order, Master Card or Visa.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And when did you say that your last period was, sweetie?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Is that when you started?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me tell you just about how far along you might be. Is it March 7th?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: It looks like right now you’re probably almost nine weeks, sweetie. So from 4 to 11 weeks, they’re $365. It’s an additional $30 if you’re a negative blood type. If you wait any longer from 12 to 13 weeks, the fee goes up to $490 and an additional $75 if you’re a negative blood type.

CALLER: After the pregnancy test that I take, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control? It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, you need to go to your OB/GYN for that, hon.

CALLER: Oh. So you guys don’t do birth control there?

CLINIC: No, we only do birth control for the patients. Like if you were a patient and you had a procedure done, we would get you started on your first pack of birth control pills, and then it would be up to you to go to your doctor or whatever to continue. So if you’re not going to come to the clinic for a procedure, then you need to go to your regular doctor.

CALLER: All right. I just wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you. But if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Becky.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right, hon?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. This is Martha. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How many weeks are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we offer the surgical procedure, which is the DNC, and that’s $370 asleep or 295 awake. And that’s done on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, or we offer the abortion pill which is $500. And that’s done on Thursdays and Fridays.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Which one should I get?

CLINIC: That’s up to you.

CALLER: Well, which one is better? I don’t know.

CLINIC: Well, that’s also up to you. It depends on what you’re more comfortable with. If you’d rather have just the DNC and be done with it, then obviously the surgery. If it’s for the pill, then that requires a little bit more work on your part. Because that basically induces a miscarriage with oral medication.

CALLER: Oh, okay. The thing is I’m really kink of worried. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We don’t have an age requirement. There’s no parental consent in Illinois.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But I would just then go ahead and schedule for the surgery not for the pill. Because the pill, you have to do that at time, and it’s a lot more complicated.

CALLER: Okay. I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can or you can just get one at the store. Once it’s positive, then you can come here and schedule the appointment.

CALLER: Are the ones that you get at the store normally right?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I just didn’t know. Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he said he was going to pay cash for everything. Would he have to fill out any forms if he was paying?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. So his name wouldn’t have to be on anything anywhere?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh.

CALLER: All right. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yeah. The exam for those are only done on Thursdays. But what you need to do first is get a test. And then once you get a test, then you can give us a call and schedule whatever you want.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, how much does the birth control cost?

CLINIC: The exam is $60 and pills are $17 a pack.

CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure nobody would have to know about that or anything?

CLINIC: Right. All that is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. I’ll talk to you later.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks. Bye.

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. This is Kathy (sp). May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes. Hold on please.

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. You’re holding for?

CALLER: Hi. I was talking to Kathy.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. I’m sorry. Hold on. She’ll be right with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hi. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah, hi. Is this Kathy?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, yeah. I was trying to ask some questions about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. And when was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Are you under any insurance?

CALLER: Well, no. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. And he said he was going to pay for everything. But is that all right if it he takes care of it, and you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: In the state of Illinois there are no regulations, meaning you do not have to tell a parent, spouse or whoever that you’re having an abortion. There are no age restrictions in the state of Illinois. It’s fine. But the problem is you’re 14 years old. Why are you seeing somebody that’s 22 years old? That person’s eight years older than you are.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, but we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He’s a great guy.

CLINIC: That doesn’t matter. If somebody found out that you were seeing this person and you got pregnant by this person, he can go to jail.

CALLER: He can go to jail?

CLINIC: Sure he can.

CALLER: Well, why?

CLINIC: Because you’re a minor, and you’re under age of 18.

CALLER: Well, he can’t go to jail. I mean, he’s the only one that’s here for me.

CLINIC: I know, but he could go to jail. I’m just forewarning you.

CALLER: Are you going to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We are bound by confidentiality. But your friends know you’re pregnant it sounds like, correct?

CALLER: Well, just my one friend.

CLINIC: Just your one friend. How confident are you and your one friend that she’s not going to say something to somebody else?

CALLER: Well, she had an abortion already.

CLINIC: Okay. When was your last period? You said January 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And are you under any insurance? Oh. He’ll be paying cash.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: It runs 295 if you’re awake or 370 to be asleep.

CALLER: Okay. He said he was going to pay for everything, right?

CLINIC: Fine.

CALLER: But he doesn’t want anyone to know about us? Would he have to fill out any forms if he was paying?

CLINIC: Nope, uh-uh. No.

CALLER: Do you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand just to make sure? Because I haven’t had one.

CLINIC: Yeah. Definitely we do do a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I’m just worried to do one from the store because I don’t know that they are — are they right?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah, they can be right.

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yeah. You can make an appointment for that. That’s not a problem at all.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: How much does it cost for birth control?

CLINIC: The exam is 80. The birth control pills can be purchased here for $17 a pack.

CALLER: The thing is I can’t drive or anything. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: So when do you guys normally do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Everyday of the week we do pregnancy testing.

CALLER: What time?

CLINIC: Monday through Friday, 8 to 5; Saturday, 8 ’til 2.

CALLER: How much does it cost to get that?

CLINIC: To get the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: No charge.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. You can stop in anytime.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: So could I call you back — was your name Kathy — if I had any questions?

CLINIC: Not a problem.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Good morning, American Women’s.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Hold on for just a moment.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Do you have any health insurance or medical card?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. Well, not exactly. The thing is my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: So you don’t go to school?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Okay. It will be 350, honey. And I can have you come in tomorrow or Saturday morning.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Right. There’s no parental consent in the state of Illinois.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So do you want to schedule?

CALLER: I was actually wanting to ask something else. Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this. And he said that he would pay cash for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for it all, would he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: Well, you have to fill out your forms; your forms, not him. We need a record of you being here. But everything is confidential, so no information is released.

CALLER: So his name wouldn’t be on anything then?

CLINIC: No. Just the person that’s going to take you home.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, he would take me home.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: So his name would be on that?

CLINIC: Right, honey.

CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t tell anybody about him or me or anybody?

CLINIC: As I said, all our services are confidential. We don’t release any information without your consent.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Do you guys do that before?

CLINIC: You said your last period was in January?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: You’re probably pregnant if you haven’t gotten a period since. You’re probably about nine weeks. But we still do a pregnancy test and an ultra sound.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It will be 350 all together.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant for some reason, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: We start you off with a pack of birth control. When you come back for your follow up, we’ll give you another pack.

CALLER: Okay. How much does it cost for the birth control?

CLINIC: Hold on a minute.

(Pause)

CLINIC: The birth control pills can vary anywhere between 28 to $35 a month.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I can’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills if I got them?

CLINIC: Well, you need to be seen by the nurse practitioner after the abortion, honey. So that’s totally separate from the abortion. You have to go get them at the pharmacy.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well, when do you guys normally have appointments for everything?

CLINIC: We have appointments every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning.

CALLER: Okay. I just wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you. But if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Jalisa (ph).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye.

CLINIC: American Women’s. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far in the pregnancy are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. One second.

(Pause)

CLINIC: That would put you about eight, nine weeks pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. So how much would it be then?

CLINIC: How many times have you been pregnant prior to this one?

CALLER: Never.

CLINIC: And do you have health insurance or public aid?

CALLER: Well, the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14. I’m 13 right now. But my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But if my boyfriend’s paying cash for everything, would he had to sign anything? He’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: You don’t have to use your parents’ insurance if you don’t want to. It will be $350.

CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything or full out any forms?

CLINIC: You are the one who’s signing everything.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, some people actually said that since he’s 22 that he’s too old for me. But would that be all right if he was there? It would be okay?

CLINIC: Actually, that’s irrelevant to us. I mean, you’re the patient. We just take you and that’s it.

CALLER: Oh. All right. I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that before everything and make sure?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys? It’s just we don’t want to worry about this anymore?

CLINIC: Well, if you’re not pregnant — if it comes out negative, and if you haven’t had a period — then we will recommend for you to have a blood test to make sure that the hormonal level in your system is down. That would indicate a real negative test. If it’s high, then we say the pregnancy is too small for it to be detected in the urine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So when you’re here, we can schedule for a pap smear. That’s how you can get birth control pills, after you get a pap smear.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does all that cost?

CLINIC: 130 for the exam and pap.

CALLER: Should I get the blood test before that though?

CLINIC: Well, if you want to schedule for just the blood test, it’s $50.

CALLER: When do you guys do that?

CLINIC: Can you come in today for the blood test?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you call him first, and then you tell me what days he’s available. And then I’ll see if those days match with our days that we are available, okay?

CALLER: Okay. But you’re sure nobody would have to know anything?

CLINIC: Right. You’re the patient, and everything is confidential. We have confidential services.

CALLER: Well, let me call him and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Kathy.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Latisha. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do provide the procedure, but not here at this site. I can give you the number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 312-266-1033.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you real quick? I’m just worried about everything because like, well I’m going to be 14 years old in March, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: No. We don’t have to — your age of — state law you’re old enough to get a termination without a parent’s consent.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: And nobody would have to know about me and my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you need to call that number.

CALLER: Well, could I — it’s just, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do the pregnancy test here, and then we can do confirmation and if you decide that’s your decision far as termination we usually refer you to our Planned Parenthood (unclear) unless there’s some other places you’d like to go somewhere else.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend have been talking about this a lot, and that’s what we decided to do. So.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control there — just so that we don’t have to worry about this again?

CLINIC: Yes, you can, but you will need an appointment for that. If it’s negative we will have to reschedule you for another day for the exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? What’s your last name?

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Everything is confidential. We don’t retrieve out any information unless you want us to. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. I’m just worried about — I don’t know what my parents would say if they found out.

CLINIC: Okay. You plan to talk to mom about birth control?

CALLER: No. I mean, if they found out — like they know my boyfriend, but they just hate him because — I mean, he’s a great guy. They just don’t like him because they think he’s too old. So — but they don’t know we’re having sex. If they found out, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Well, just from experience and from working with young ladies, I do encourage you one day to really talk to the parent about birth control.

CALLER: They don’t ever listen to me. They just don’t understand.

CLINIC: I’m just letting you know. They might — you might think they don’t understand, but it’s usually better for them to know than to not know, and as words of encouragement from experience. So just think about it. That’s all. Okay?

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. That’s why I was saying to you, everything is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Your mom find your pills around the home anywhere then she’s going to know that. So you know, you would need to keep them somewhere where she can’t find them.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, is there any other kind of birth control?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: Is there any other kind?

CLINIC: Yeah, a birth control pills. They have depo provera, the injection that you get or Lunell (sp). I’m sorry, depo is every three months. Lunell is every month. There’s the diaphragm. There’s the IUD. We’ll go over all of that when you come in.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? What’s your last name?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: What’s your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Smith?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Hold on one second, Christine.

Okay. Christine, what’s your date of birth? We’ve got a lot of Christine Smiths.

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Yeah, March 19, ’88. You made an appointment before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Now, they have several in 1988. Hold on. Let me see if it’s you. What was that number? Hold on one second. (pause) Christina.
