CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How many week are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: Do you know the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: You’re right now about nine weeks.

CALLER: Nine weeks?

CALLER: All right. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we don’t tell anybody. There’s no age requirement, sweetie.

CALLER: The thing is, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and we decided we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he’s going to pay for everything with cash. Would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms?

CLINIC: He will have to be here if he’s paying. I mean, if he’s paying cash, he can just give you the money. But if you get anesthesia, you’re going to need a driver.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he said that he would be there.

CLINIC: Well, then you’d be fine.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: All right. Do you guys do like a pregnancy test beforehand just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah. Did you take a pregnancy test though?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, I think you should take an at-home pregnancy test first so you don’t waste your time coming here and spend the whole day here and then told you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Huh? Yeah, EPT.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So just get an EPT at least to be safe. Because you have to be here four to six hours. It’s like an all-day affair. And then you go through everything, and then get told you’re not even pregnant, that’s a waste of time.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there for birth control?

CLINIC: We don’t do any pap smears right now, but you might want to call Planned Parenthood. I know they do it.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay?

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name again?

CLINIC: Princess. Okay, sweetie?

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I ask a couple questions? I’m just really worried. I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Like I was talking to my friend and she said that you guys have to know how old I am and everything and tell my parents. Is that true? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: So right now you’re 13?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: I don’t — let me find out for you. I don’t — I think it’s confidential still.

CALLER: Okay. Because like my boyfriend’s 22. Is it all right if he signs whatever?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. Hold on. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay, you’re the pregnant one, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I spoke to the first number I gave you, that 422 number?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And I explained to her, you know, 13-year-od, and no you don’t need a consent from your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: In the state of Florida you don’t.

CALLER: So I can have my boyfriend sign whatever?

CLINIC: He doesn’t need to sign anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s your choice and this is what you want to do, and that’s up to you.

CALLER: So you guys don’t have to tell anybody like about my boyfriend or like —

CLINIC: Well, I mean, that’s up to you. I mean, but we don’t — he doesn’t, he doesn’t qualify for legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: If that’s what you’re trying to do. He doesn’t — he is not your legal guardian.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It has to be some something that lives with you, either an older brother, older sister. That’s considered more of a consent if you don’t want your parents to know. But you don’t need a consent to have an abortion.

CALLER: So I don’t need to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: Okay. Well say that like I wasn’t pregnant? Do you guys — well like I don’t know, but like do you do the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: And is it all right like if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: He could — we won’t let him inside with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Inside the office in the back.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody if like I had a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No, we’re also confidential here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We don’t need no consent for you to be seen here. Did you do a pregnancy test already?

CALLER: Well, I did a home pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Ah hah.

CALLER: But I don’t know if I did it right. It came out positive, but I’m not sure.

CLINIC: Okay, so why don’t you just come by here?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You could come by. We’re finished for the morning, so any time after 2:00 between 2 and 5.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: $5.00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Well, say that I wasn’t pregnant after you guys did a pregnancy test. Do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. You want to have a full exam here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That, the full exam is $35.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we don’t need the consent from your parents.

CALLER: Okay. So you guys wouldn’t tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Exactly.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: We won’t — any information you give us is confidential. No one could call us. You can’t even call us over the phone. You see how we’re talking now?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: We won’t even speak to you if you’re a patient and you’re asking questions about yourself.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you’re calling me now for your result that you took a test last week, we won’t be able to even acknowledge the fact that you are a patient here.
