(dialing sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do

CLINIC: Were we just talking a minute ago?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Go ahead.

CALLER: My friend just told me to call you, so.

CLINIC: Okay. What did you need to come in for?

CALLER: Well, like — Susan. I talked to a lady named Susan at the other place that I called, but she said to call you guys. But I was wondering about having an abortion, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Our next appointment is not until March 1. We just do it on Fridays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The price starts at $350. It goes up from there depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if my boyfriend pays for that?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. (laughs)

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. (laughs) And I have to ask you to call us back Tuesday morning to make an appointment because we’re not open on Friday or Monday.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be like a specific age to have an abortion? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. You have to have your mother’s permission then, or your mother or father, or —

CALLER: They can’t do that. Is there any way not to tell them?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because like —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — if they found out — like my boyfriend’s 22 and they hate him because they think he’s too old for me, so, they can’t find out.

CLINIC: We cannot do the surgery without permission from your parents.

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way to — what can I do then?

CLINIC: You really don’t have any choice. If you want to get it done because you’re only 14 that’s the only way to get it done in this state. You could certainly go look at other states. I don’t know what’s available in other states, but that’s the law in this state.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s tough for you, I know. I’m sorry. The only other option would be to get a court-appointed legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And that would have to be signed — that would have to be signed court papers which we would have to approve.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t know. You’d have to call the court system and find out about that. I expect it would cost an attorney and court fees and I’m sure it would cost money.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Why don’t you investigate that, and like I say we can’t do the surgery without parental consent.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just scared because like I don’t know what to do. Like my last period was like the first week in December, so.

CLINIC: Okay. So let’s see. That means you’re going to be pretty far along by March 1. You’ll be 13 1/2 weeks. So it’s going to be $450 by then.

CALLER: Oh. All right. Well, my boyfriend said he’d take care of everything.

CLINIC: Right. There’s another place you might want to try calling. I don’t know what their situation is, but try calling Delaware Women’s Health at 992-7996.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. Thanks. Bye.

CALLER: Well, like —

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: Sorry. Do you know — like if I had any other questions, like I need to talk to my boyfriend and tell him what’s going on, but is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure, of course.

CALLER: And ask you? What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m the person who answers the phone. My name is Ellen.

CALLER: Ellen? Okay? I’m Christine, so.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ll do whatever we can to help you.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Thanks. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
