CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not at this site. I can give you the West Hartford number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 953-6201.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 on the 20th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, they don’t tell your parents. You don’t need parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Where? At his clinic?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, you can come in if you want. We’re here to 6:45 today.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I haven’t had my period since January 3rd, and I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would you have to tell anybody if we were there?

CLINIC: No, you don’t have to — well, you know, just the counselor who takes you in. But you don’t have to tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay. So if he was paying for everything he wouldn’t have to sign any papers or anything?

CLINIC: Hold on. You said you’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And he’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Can you hold on one minute, please?

CALLER: All right.

(Short pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: I was just told if you do come in and you do proceed — you’re only 13 you said — we would have to report you for that.

CALLER: To who? What do you mean?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because you’re under age and he’s over 18.

CALLER: Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: I really don’t know what you can do. I can give you the number to West Hartford and maybe they can talk to you about what you can do.

CALLER: So I can’t come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Well, if you come in and they start asking you questions, they can report you because you’re a minor.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: He would be reported to the authorities because he’s older and you’re a minor.

CALLER: Well, what can happen to him?

CLINIC: He could probably — I really couldn’t tell you what can happen. He can really get into trouble.

CALLER: Oh. So if I don’t bring him would it be better then?

CLINIC: I mean, you can come in, and just don’t say how old he is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. So I could come in for a pregnancy test and just not say anything, and it would be all okay?

CLINIC: Hold on one minute, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Yep. When you come in just don’t say how old he is.

CALLER: So I could come in and get a pregnancy test and it would be all okay?

CLINIC: Yep, and just don’t tell them how old he is.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do that.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: When you come in, you’re under age, so it wouldn’t be a cost to you. But you would have to make an appointment in order to start on birth control pills.

CALLER: The thing is I can’t drive. Would my boyfriend be able to bring me?

CLINIC: He can probably, but just don’t say how old he is.

CALLER: But if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Not for that. Just don’t say how old he is, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Are you still there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Well, I need to talk to my boyfriend and see. What time are you guys normally open?

CLINIC: On Mondays and Thursdays we’re open from 11 to 6:45; Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 to 12; and the Friday, 9:30 to 4.

CALLER: So I need to call him and see. But if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Yeheira (ph).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right then.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.
