CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Medical (?). How may I direct your call?
CALLER: I was trying to talk to Barb.
CLINIC: One moment.
(Phone ringing 2x)
CLINIC: Good afternoon. This is Barbara. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was talking to Theresa (sp) at the Planned Parenthood, and I was wanting to get an abortion.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: She said to talk to you.
CLINIC: Right. Can you tell me when the first day of your last normal period was?
CALLER: January 15th.
CLINIC: We can do a two-day surgical procedure. The first day the doctor goes over your health history with you, he does a brief physical exam, and then we insert in a little stick of seaweed that’s called a laminaria (sp). We put that into your cervix. We leave that in overnight and then dilate your cervix by absorbing moisture. And then we have you come back the next morning, and we do a suction procedure.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: The cost is $375. And we do expect that to be paid in a cash payment on the first appointment day.
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything in cash. The thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it then?
CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents even it he doesn’t come in.
CALLER: Okay. So he’s old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: It’s just we talked about it, and he we don’t want to want anyone to know about us. So would he have to sign any forms if he’s paying?
CLINIC: Well, there is a consent form that you would have to sign, and we would probably have him sign as a witness. But all of our records are confidential.
CALLER: Could somebody else be the witness then?
CLINIC: Certainly.
CALLER: Would you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand? Because I haven’t had one yet.
CLINIC: You haven’t done one?
CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period for a while, and we’re just really scared.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, the first thing I would do is buy a home pregnancy test.
CALLER: Are those usually right?
CLINIC: They’re very accurate.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come to you guys and get some birth control just so that we don’t have to worry about this?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: Okay. How much does that cost?
CLINIC: Well, a new patient visit, I’m not exactly sure. It would depend on lab work and stuff if you decided to do any of that. And you probably should need a pap smear. But I don’t deal with any of the financial stuff, so I can’t tell you exactly how much that is. I certainly can transfer you to the cashier, and she can give you an idea of what the cost would be.
CALLER: Well, once I get birth control — I can’t drive — would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?
CLINIC: Probably.
CALLER: Okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control right?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: So you’re sure nobody would have to tell my parents about anybody?
CLINIC: Not as far as I know.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?
CLINIC: All of our records are confidential. Without your consent, we can’t tell anybody anything.
CALLER: All right. Okay. That’s just my main concern.
CLINIC: Now it might be less expensive for you to go to Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And their records are also confidential.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay. Well, could I call you back to set up the appointment?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: I need to call my boyfriend to see when he can — what days are you guys open?
CLINIC: Well, right now the first appointment that I have available would be Tuesday and Wednesday, the 19th and 20th.
CALLER: Okay. Would that be enough time?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, let me call my boyfriend and call you back. Is that all right?
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. Thank you.
CALLER: Thanks. Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.
