CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Latasha (sp).

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No. We do at our Hilltop office.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do I call them for that, or — Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Just a second, okay? 222-5290.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. It’s confidential. They won’t have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I — we just were talking about everything, and we don’t want anyone to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you have Medical?

CALLER: No. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Well, before you have him do that, just go in there and tell them that you have zero income. They might have you fill out a paper, and you might be eligible for state income.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Um-um. No. Not at all. It’s confidential. Trust me. (laughs)

CALLER: Oh. All right. Well, so they wouldn’t have to know anything about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Nope. You don’t even have to bring him into it. No.

CALLER: Oh. Well, he’d be the only way I could get there. I mean —

CLINIC: You can take him. But, you know, you don’t have to — they won’t be interested in all that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Actually there.

CALLER: Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: It’s just I’m really worried about all this because I haven’t had — I just haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there then? That way I don’t have to worry about all this anymore?

CLINIC: Yep. You can.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. No. It’s your chart, and it’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay. But the only thing is, I’m not old enough to drive yet. Could my boyfriend pick up the birth control pills?

CLINIC: Umm. Well, first come in and take your pregnancy test and all that, and then you can talk to someone about that. Probably so.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Okay, bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Stephanie speaking. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling because like I was talking to the other place and Latasha told me to call here. I was wondering about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. We do them every Wednesday. The cost is $345. If you’re 12 to 14 weeks it is $445.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just I was wondering, I was asking her but she wasn’t really sure. She said that — the thing is, my friend told me that — like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. I’m missing something. What about parents?

CALLER: Well, they can’t find out at all that I’m getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. We have confidential services here.

CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we don’t tell anybody your business.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: But would my boyfriend be able to come in with me and you wouldn’t have to ask him a whole bunch of questions then?

CLINIC: We wouldn’t ask him anything. We would only talk to you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And as far as your boyfriend, he could come but he will just be sitting and waiting. He’s not allowed in the back with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, I just haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since like December. So is it possible, like if the pregnancy test was, came out that I wasn’t pregnant would I be able to get birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. You sure would be. Do you have any medical insurance already?

CALLER: Well, no. By boyfriend said he was going to take care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay. I just want to know, did you have any insurance already though.

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay, so what we could do is qualify for you for our state funding program which will cover the cost of your exams, your birth control pills, pregnancy test. It only covers you up until you get pregnant. And the reason why is because we’re trying to prevent pregnancy.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah. So the green card doesn’t cover you after you get pregnant, but it sure does cover all the other exams and stuff. So all we ask is that you leave a donation so you don’t have to —

CALLER: Would I have to pay for the abortion, or not?

CLINIC: Yes, you would have to pay for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. As I said, the green card only covers you up until you get pregnant. So for abortion services you will have to pay for it.

CALLER: Okay. And how much is that?

CLINIC: $345.

CALLER: So is there anything else though?

CLINIC: Is there anything else as far as?

CALLER: To pay for?

CLINIC: Not the day — well, the day of the abortion if you wanted pills and stuff, if you want to leave with some type of birth control you probably have to pay for that or if you were eligible for state funding that would pay for it after you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Ma’am, we don’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Well, like the state funding people.

CLINIC: It’s confidential. We don’t tell anybody your business.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: (laughs) She asked me that three times. We don’t tell anybody. We don’t tell anybody your business. That’s your personal business, and we don’t let everybody know.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if I got the state funds would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: (pause) No. They won’t have to — no. We won’t, we don’t tell. We don’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All your services are confidential here.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty? Did you have any other questions?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. If I think of any, could I call you back and talk to you?

CLINIC: Say that again?

CALLER: If I did have any questions, would I be able to call you back and talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure. If you’d like. Everybody’s here and available for you, but if you would like to just specifically ask for me, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay, and you’re Stephanie?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what time are you guys normally open like tomorrow?

CLINIC: Tomorrow we’re open until 5:00, and tonight we’re open until 8:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how soon would I have to schedule like an abortion?

CLINIC: Tomorrow we’re doing them, so today you would have to schedule it, today. Or you could schedule one for next week.

CALLER: Okay. Well, when could I come in for the pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: You can come in any time that we’re open. And we stay open tonight until 8:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. So, I’ll have to talk to my boyfriend and see. But okay, thanks.

CLINIC: All right. You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
