CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: How far along are you into your pregnancy?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: December 26?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You’re looking at about $450 to be asleep or $350 to be awake.a

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: An additional $60 if your blood type is negative.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like my friend told me since like I’m going to be 14 later on this month that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could you just let him sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You don’t need a parent.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: You don’t need a parent.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Everything is confidential.

CALLER: All right. Well, could I actually — do you guys do the pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. We do everything in the same day.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well –

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s what you need to do first is take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, what time do you normally do those?

CLINIC: Do you plan on coming down today?

CALLER: Well, I got to call my boyfriend to see, but how late are you guys open?

CLINIC: Until 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Are you guys open tomorrow?

CLINIC: No, we’re not. Women’s Health Specialists is open late tonight and they’re also open tomorrow. You could go get a pregnancy test from them.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: They don’t charge you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Do you have a pen and paper?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Their phone number is 451-0621. And that’s Women’s Health Specialists, and just call them any time you need to get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, it’s confidential.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so when I call back, do I need to make an appointment?

CLINIC: Medical Clinic. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Do you know how much it costs?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: December 26.

CLINIC: December?

CALLER: Yeah. Like the day after Christmas.

CLINIC: Okay. You would be looking at $320 to be awake with valium or $400 to be asleep.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know, like I’m just kind of worried because like my friend said that since I’m going to be like — I’ll be 14 later on this month, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, it’s got to be a legal guardian. When are you going to be 14?

CALLER: Like on the 9th.

CLINIC: Of March?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Oh. Well, I would just wait until then.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: I could set you up an appointment for after that date.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much would it cost?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you need to get in here before you’re 12 weeks, okay? Because that’s when our price changes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you’re going to be 14 on the 9th, any Monday or Thursday actually after the 9th, either on or after the 9th because our doctors are only here on Monday and Thursday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I just need to tell my boyfriend how much it will cost then because he said he would pay for everything. How much would it cost then?

CLINIC: If you get in here before the 20th of March then you’re looking at the fees that I told you.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: $320 to be awake and $400 to be asleep.

CALLER: So if I do it after my birthday you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend would have to bring me. Would that be all right if he was there with me?

CLINIC: Well, we don’t let anybody go in the back with you. We have other patients back there. But I mean, he can wait in the waiting area.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But he was going to pay for everything. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, not at all.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Yeah. No. Just tell him it’s cash only, no personal checks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or we take Visa or Mastercharge.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is — do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. We repeat the pregnancy test when you come in, and you’ll also have an exam by the doctor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Well, we’re not really a birth control clinic. There’s a clinic here in Stockton called Delta Healthcare, and we send a lot of patients there for the birth control method.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. No. Not after you turn 14, no.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So basically just wait until I’m 14 and –

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: And that will be good?

CLINIC: Yeah. But go ahead and let him know what the prices are, and like I said we can set the appointment up ahead of time because you don’t want to wait until you’re 12 weeks because then it will be more expensive.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, are you going to be open tomorrow?

CLINIC: No. We’re closed on the weekend, hon.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’ll be open Monday morning at 9:00.

CALLER: Okay. So I need to call and get an appointment with you?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: Cathy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CLINIC: Anywhere from $420 to $560 based on your gross monthly income.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you tried applying for Medical yet?

CALLER: No. It’s just, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents all this. By my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just — is he old enough to take care of it and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Let me talk to our AB coordinator. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: One moment.

CLINIC: Holding. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was talking to somebody else. I don’t know what happened to her. But could — who are you?

CLINIC: My name is Mona.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I was asking about if they would have to tell my parents if I was getting an abortion. It’s just I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, the thing is, if your boyfriend is 22 that’s a huge problem within the state.

CALLER: Why? Why is that a problem?

CLINIC: Because you’re 14. You’re a minor, and he’s an adult.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. But if you ever seen the bulletin boards or on the back of the bus, that’s a huge thing in the state of California or actually any state.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Based on age.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not 100 percent sure. That’s something you’d want to call like a local authorities about and ask them what the ramifications would be.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want my boyfriend to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Well, you don’t have to tell them your name, but you can inquire with that on an anonymous basis. But in the state of California if you’re a minor and you’re with an adult and the age difference is that great, that’s considered statutory rape, whether you’re consenting or not.

CALLER: Okay. So could I come in there to get like a pregnancy test? I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: But my boyfriend told me to call you guys. So.

CLINIC: Okay. One of the things I’m going to tell you is, do not mention how old your partner is when you come in. Are your parents aware of your relationship?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, they know we’re going out. They just don’t like him because –

CLINIC: I wonder why. (laughs)

CALLER: But they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, they can’t find out at all. I mean, I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: We’re not going to tell them, but you’re waling a very thin line and so is he because you’re a minor and he’s an adult.

CALLER: Well, are you going to tell anybody?

CLINIC: If you tell us, we have to.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So keep that in mind if you come in. We can do a pregnancy test anytime between now and 3:00 today or Thursday and Friday between 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. And then if your tests were to be positive, we’d let you know where to go from there.

CALLER: Well, if it was that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control just so that I don’t have to worry about all this anymore?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Our services are all confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, so what should I ask for when I go up there?

CLINIC: Just let them know that — well you haven’t had a period since December, right?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Are you having any symptoms of pregnancy — breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Change in eating habits?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. I would say go ahead and request birth control. And we’ll do a pregnancy test when you come in, and then we’ll go from there. So just request the birth control. You can do it with or without the exam. And if your test is negative, we’ll give you birth control that day. If it’s positive, we’ll advise you from there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control — it’s just I cant’ drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the refills or whatever?

CLINIC: Well, pretty much happens is generally we’ll start you off with three cycles of pills. At the end of the third cycle you need to come back in and have your blood pressure checked, your weight. We ask you a list of questions about how you’re doing on the pill. If everything is good, we’ll give you the rest of the year at that time.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you’re having problems, they’ll change you.

CALLER: Oh. So I would only have to make like a couple visits?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend didn’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Right. Yeah. You don’t go through what you’re not ready for basically. So for birth control we check in at 7:00 a.m., 8:45 a.m., or 12:45 p.m. Or we can make an appointment on a Tuesday evening.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: When he can bring me. But.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, check with him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And give us a call back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Should I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Yes. My name is Mona.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Margarita (sp).

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. But our center in Walnut Creek and Concord do. Do you want their phone number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Concord is 676-0300. And Walnut Creek is 935-3010.

CALLER: Okay. Well do you know — I’m just really worried about all this because like, well I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that you guys would have tao tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Oh, god. You’re boyfriend’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Umm. Yeah. Hold on, please.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, you’ll be fine. It’s just going to be a problem if you let them know that your partner is over 21, because that is against the law.

CALLER: Why is it against the law?

CLINIC: Because you, you know, it’s not — if he’s over 21 and you’re under 18 and you’re having intercourse it’s just — you don’t know about that law in California?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Yeah. You need to get informed about that. So just don’t let them know, but you don’t have to have your parents know. You don’t have to have them know that you’re getting a procure in Concord, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So you’re protected by the right of privacy, but don’t mention your partner is that old, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Do it all at Concord.

CALLER: Oh, well, my friend just told me to go to you guys because it was better to go there.

CLINIC: No. You can do it all there.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant though, could i come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: If you want.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just, I haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet, and I’m not really sure if I’m pregnant. So.

CLINIC: What does the pregnancy test say?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: Okay. So why do you think you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Oh, well I just haven’t had my period since like December 21st, so I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Well, you can come in and take a pregnancy test here. I mean, and you know you can come in and take a pregnancy test any day before 4:00 and we call you back at home with your pregnancy test results. Depending on that you can go there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if my boyfriend drives me there for the pregnancy test would that be a problem?

CLINIC: No. It’s just, just don’t state that that is your partner or whatever. Just — you know, we shouldn’t really want to know that that is because we do have to report it.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So just — you shouldn’t have any problem. He shouldn’t have to be involved in any of this.

CALLER: Oh. Well, he said that he was going to pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Well, I mean, we don’t have to know where the money’s coming from as long as you have the money. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So something else is, if you are pregnant and you do want to terminate the pregnancy you can go into Medical and apply then so that Medical can cover your visit.

CALLER: Would they have to tell my parents though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just handle that, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: No. Have you been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No. As a matter of fact, if you bring your boyfriend here they’re going to call the cops.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because he’s 22 and you’re 14.

CALLER: Well, why would they call the cops? I mean –

CLINIC: Because we’re mandated to report. That’s called child abuse.

CALLER: He’s not abusing me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married and spend the rest of our lives together.

CLINIC: (pause) Um, let me see if I can make you an appointment, and you do not need a parent’s consent, and you do not need your boyfriend either.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Hold on.

CALLER: He’d be the only way I could get here.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on. (pause) Well, I won’t do that. Just, you know, I’m just letting you know what can happen.

CALLER: So I just shouldn’t bring my boyfriend then?

CLINIC: No, you can. But –

CALLER: But then he’d go to jail?

CLINIC: No, don’t let them know that he’s your boyfriend.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. It’s just –

CLINIC: Do you have health insurance or Medical?

CALLER: No. He said he was going to pay for everything. So.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just I’m really scared because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: December 21st.

CLINIC: December 21st? Let me see. And you’re sure that you want to have an abortion?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know what else to do. I mean, is there — should I just come in for a pregnancy test and see?

CLINIC: Okay. If your first day of your last period was December 21st, we are approximating that you’re about 9 weeks and three days.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? By the time I make your appointment you’d be about 10 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much would it cost then?

CLINIC: It would be about $420.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? That’s including everything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me make you an appointment for –

CALLER: Well, like, could I come in for a pregnancy test just to make sure I was pregnant?

CLINIC: Yeah, we can do everything on Friday.

CALLER: On Friday?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Well, what time on Friday?

CLINIC: You want to come in before then?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: You can come in today.

CALLER: I have to call my boyfriend and see when he can get the time off work. But I don’t know when to come in because he has to take me. But –

CLINIC: Okay. Does he –

CALLER: What time on Friday?

CLINIC: He works?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, he has a job.

CLINIC: Okay. What time does he get off of work? I can make you an appointment about the time where he’s getting off.

CALLER: Oh. Well, he gets off at 5:00.

CLINIC: Around 5:00? Okay. Let’s make you an appointment.

CALLER: But like say the, say that the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant. Would you guys be able to –

CLINIC: We can get you started on birth control.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: But does anybody have to know about that?

CLINIC: No. This is, everything’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Let’s see. You want to come in tomorrow?

CALLER: What time tomorrow?

CLINIC: You said he gets off at 5:00?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You want to come in at 5:30?

CALLER: I think we could probably get there by then.

CLINIC: Okay. What is your name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Christine, C-H?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Your phone number? I mean, your phone number, I mean your last name?

CALLER: Smith?

CLINIC: Smith?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Your date of birth?

CALLER: March 19th, 1988.

CLINIC: March 19th. You’re going to have a birthday pretty soon, huh?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: What are you doing for your birthday?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know.

CLINIC: You don’t know yet? Do you have a pager, cell number where we can get ahold of you just in case?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend just got a cell phone but I don’t know the number yet.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back with that?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Lisa.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. So we’ll see you tomorrow at 5:30 for — we’re going to do a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: An ultrasound.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And bloodwork. Basically, we’re going to draw some blood.

CALLER: And you’re sure you won’t have to tell anybody about any of this?

CLINIC: Nobody.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So everything’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, do you know what? Yeah. Let me double-check, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Well, everything regardless is strictly confidential, but, um, we can also — what we can do, we can get you on this program after.

CALLER: Um-hum.

CLINIC: After, if you are pregnant?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It has to be after the determination. Okay?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you’re not pregnant, we can get you on another program, and when you come in tomorrow you can ask if they can get you started on some type of birth control.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we’ll give you a pamphlet with all the information regarding birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? What else? Let’s see. I think that’s about it. And you’re sure that you want to terminate the pregnancy?

CALLER: Yeah. We’ve been talking about it, and that’s what we decided to do.

CLINIC: Okay. So we’ll see you tomorrow at 5:30.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye. (phone clicks)

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood of Annapolis. This is Celia. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t provide those type of services here, but I can go ahead and give you the Vallejo (sp) number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 643-4545.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I was just really worried about everything because like — well, I’m going to be 14 in March. And my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s –

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — 22. Could he just take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Uhh, I’m not sure about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If I were you I’d just call them and ask.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Probably not today. Today we’re having a staff meeting. So if you want you can probably come back next Tuesday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay, but would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like if — the only way I’d be able to get there is if my boyfriend brought me. Would he be able to come in with me though?

CLINIC: Inside?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, if he wanted to.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just — he was going to pay for everything, but he doesn’t want my parents to find out at all. So he just doesn’t’ want anybody to find out about us. Would he have to sign a lot of papers if he was paying for it?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: As for confidential reasons? No. That you were in here taking birth control or having a pregnancy test? No.

CALLER: Okay. But it’s just – my friend said that you would have to tell a whole bunch of different people, so.

CLINIC: Sometimes — see the thing is, with his age being 22, we would have to report it.

CALLER: Why? To who?

CLINIC: Because you’re 14 and he’s 22.

CALLER: Well, who do you –

CLINIC: If you were 18 that would be a different thing. But see the thing is, you’re not an adult yet.

CALLER: Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: I mean, you can come in here and take the pregnancy test and you know, we’ll go from there. We’ll do the counseling. If you’re not pregnant we can get you on birth control, but we will have to probably report it you know.

CALLER: To who?

CLINIC: To the, probably to the police department.

CALLER: Well, what would happen? I mean, I don’t want to get in trouble. Are they going to arrest me?

CLINIC: No, they wouldn’t arrest you.

CALLER: Well, what — why do you have to tell them then?

CLINIC: Because we are supposed to report everything. We’re mandatory. We have to report it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, should I just not bring him with me then?

CLINIC: I mean, you can do it either way. I mean, and when you come in here we can go ahead and give you the counseling.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: So either way — if you want what we can do — do you have insurance?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we can — if you don’t have — you don’t have insurance though?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. You can go ahead and come in, and we can see if you’re state funding. If you’re not stating funding, do you know for a fact that you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, no, I’m just — I haven[‘t had my period since like December, so I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, what you can do is just go ahead and come in and we can do the pregnancy test and we’ll see if the state will cover you for a visit, and then we’ll go ahead and do the counseling.

CALLER: Well, would you have to report me if I come in though?

CLINIC: We’re probably going to, yeah.

CALLER: Oh. Well, why would I want to come in then?

CLINIC: To see if you’re pregnant. Are you going to — are you planning to keep this child if you are?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. If — you need to come in to get the verification. If you don’t then you probably won’t be able to get an abortion. That’s what they need for like in Planned Parenthood in Vallejo if you’re going to go there to get an abortion. They would need the verification stating that you are pregnant and how far along you are.

CALLER: Well, what if I was out with a 22-year-old boyfriend? What if he was like 13?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: What if I wasn’t with a 22-year-old boyfriend? What if my boyfriend was like 13?

CLINIC: Well, that would be a different thing.

CALLER: Oh, but you wouldn’t have to report anything then?

CLINIC: Well, if he was 13, I mean do your parents know?

CALLER: Well, they don’t know that me and my boyfriend are having sex. I mean, they know him. But. If they found out that we were having sex I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: That’s why they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Yeah. (pause) Did you want to come in to get a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, not if I’m going to be reported.

CLINIC: I mean, if you — do you understand why though? Because I mean, the age difference?

CALLER: Well, but, but — my boyfriend will get in trouble if I come in?

CLINIC: We will just need to probably report it and see, you know, if it’s consensual sex, you know?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But, yeah, we would have to.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any other place I could go where they wouldn’t tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. I’m not sure.

CALLER: Okay. I just don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: If you want — like I said you can come in on Tuesday and get that pregnancy test done.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But as long as I come in you’re going to tell?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Well, I’m going to have to call my boyfriend and see. Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. That would be great.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name again?

CLINIC: Lilly.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: No, not at this one. The one on Benjamin Holt. That number is 477-4103.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they would — I’m just really worried because like — well, I’m going to be 14 in March and they, my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I was having an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. I think because of the age I wouldn’t tell them how old he is.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But, no, they don’t call your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So call them up, make an appointment. You have Medical?

CALLER: Well, no. He said, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CALLER: Okay. The whole thing is, I’m just really worried because like, um, my — I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m just scared, and I don’t know what to do.

CALLER: What time do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests up until 6:00 today.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would be the only way I could get there. Would it be all right if he, he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just we were talking about others, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people knowing about us. So would you guys be asking questions and stuff?

CLINIC: Uh, it depends on — you do have paperwork to fill out, and then I don’t know what type of questions they’ll ask you about that. They don’t really get into it unless you get into it. So.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if I don’t say anything, you guys wouldn’t tell, or talk to him or anything?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there, just so that we don’t have to worry about all this again?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Everything’s confidential here.

CALLER: Everything?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if — the thing is, if I was on birth control, I don’t have a — I’m not old enough to drive. Would I be able to send my boyfriend to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: No. That we don’t do because everything’s confidential.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay, bye.

CALLER: Bye.
