CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, but we can schedule you an appointment. The one in Orange does.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can you hold on one second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thank you.

RECORDING: (music) Planned Parenthood has eight medical centers throughout Orange and San Bernardino Counties to better serve you. You can visit any of our medical centers at Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, Mission Veijo, Orange, Santa Ana, Upland and San Bernardino. Each of our centers provide walk-in hours for all of our confidential services with our medical professionals ready to help you. (music) Planned Parenthood realizes that accidents happen. That’s why we make emergency contraception to all our patients. Emergency contraception pills can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Sometimes your condom breaks or you forget to take your birth control pills. Plan ahead and ask your nurse practitioner how you can take some EC home today. (music) Fact or fiction? Sometimes it’s hard to tell. Call the Teens Ask Teens Hotline at 1-877-4me2ask. That’s 1-877-463-2275. We offer real choices from teen voices. Ask your peers about pregnancy prevention, birth control methods, sexually transmitted infections and more. Call 1-877-4me2ask. Everyone has questions. Here’s where to find the answers. (music) At Planned Parenthood we are excited to announce our first chat room ever. Go to PlannedParenthoodchat.com to get your reproductive healthcare questions answered 24 hours a day. Just type in plannedparenthoodchat.com. It’s that easy. (music) In the movies they show you the foreplay and skip to the fireworks. They forget to mention the consequences. That’s why we offer all the services that women, men and teens need in the real world. Education, comprehensive family planning services, birth control, emergency contraception, confidential HIV testing, prenatal care, teen hotlines, cancer screening, with medical professionals at every location. (music) Thank you for holding. We promise to answer all questions in a thorough and sensitive manner. Please have your information ready to make your call easier. (music) You can make a difference. As a volunteer for Planned Parenthood you can have the satisfaction of helping people less fortunate than yourself and helping to promote the mission of Planned Parenthood. You can volunteer time in our medical centers, in our political activities, and in our fundraising efforts. Ask for our volunteer coordinator to find out how you can begin volunteering for Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is celebrating National Condom Week during the month of February. Check out our ad in the OC Weekly, Mainstreet, or Scratch Magazine to find out how you can get a free goodie bag. The celebration only lasts through February, so check out our ad today. (music) (Spanish message on HOPE.) Short on time? Need birth control fast? Planned Parenthood’s new HOPE program allows women to receive birth control without taking a pap smear saving you time during your visit. If you qualify for the HOPE program we still suggest that you schedule a pap smear as part of your routine checkup. Pelvic and breast exams help detect STDs, HIV-AIDS and cancer. (music)

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. Can you please hold?

(dialing sound)

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I was on the phone with someone else. Is it —

CLINIC: What can I help you with?

CALLER: I was just wanting to know if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No. They’re done at the Planned Parenthood in the city of Orange.

CALLER: Okay. Did you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Did you need to schedule an appointment? I can schedule you the appointment.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Have you been to Planned Parenthood before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Let me get some information from you. Hold on. Are you a patient of Planned Parenthood already or no?

CALLER: No. Do you have tao be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? All right.

CLINIC: I need to get some information from you first. Hold on.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last menstrual period?

CALLER: Well, it was the — like the first week in December. It was probably around the 5th.

CLINIC: Okay, and have you had a positive pregnancy test already at a clinic?

CALLER: Not at a clinic.

CLINIC: Have you had one at home?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I took a home pregnancy test, and it said it was positive, but I wasn’t sure if I did it right.

CLINIC: Just a minute. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

RECORDING: (Spanish) (music) (repeat of above)

CLINIC: Okay. Sorry about that. Right now you’re about 10 weeks pregnant.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And what’s your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: C-H or K?

CALLER: C-H.

CLINIC: What’s your date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: What’s the daytime phone number they can reach you at?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Like my boyfriend was going to give me his cellphone number to give you, but he just got it so I don’t know it yet.

CLINIC: We need to have a number to schedule you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t really know when I can —

CLINIC: Because what about if they need to reschedule your appointment or they can’t see you that day and they don’t confirm appointments.

CALLER: I was actually wondering like, do you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay, because the problem is I can’t tell my parents at all because like, my boyfriend’ 22 and we’re going to get married and everything, but my parents can’t find out because they hate him. They think he’s too old for me. So.

CLINIC: Okay, so we need to have a number where we can call you.

CALLER: But I don’t know it right now.

CLINIC: Hold on, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: We need to have a phone number even if it’s a friend of someone that can get ahold of you.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back with that?

CLINIC: Yeah. I wouldn’t be able to schedule your appointment though.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because we need that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So are you going to call back today?

CALLER: Well, yeah. But you sure you don’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah. All the services are kept confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend was also asking about birth control. Like is it all right to get it from you guys or —

CLINIC: Yeah, you can get birth control.

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was on birth control or not?

CLINIC: No. All our services are kept confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: In the state of California you don’t need parental consent to get an abortion or to get birth control.

CALLER: Okay. So could I call you back real quick? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Martha.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay? Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
