CLINIC: Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, in Tucson. But I can give you the phone number.

CALLER: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just worried because like — well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Do you know for sure you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 26.

CLINIC: Well first you should come in and get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Um, whatever you could afford to pay.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s $13, and you need to be here by 4:00.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would my parents have to know about that though?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just, the thing is, my boyfriend said he was going to pay for everything, and he was going to bring me and everything, but we were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign any papers?

CLINIC: You?

CALLER: No. My boyfriend.

CLINIC: No. You fill out papers. But it’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in to get birth control too?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: We do a physical, and you get the birth control after the physical and it’s whatever you can afford to pay.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control today?

CLINIC: Well, you’d have to have your physical.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how long does it take to get that?

CLINIC: About 45 minutes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And so our next opening is at 1:30.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would have to call him and see, but if I was on birth control you wouldn’t have to tell anybody either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, is it all right if I call my boyfriend to ask him what time he can come in and then call you back? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Belinda (sp).

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay.
