TAPE – 573

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood (unclear). Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: $475.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried because like my friend told me — well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Let me check. One moment. (pause) Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t report it to your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, so I’m just worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 26, so I’m scared. Do you think that there would be any way that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: December 26?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you normally have a regular period?

CALLER: Usually.

CLINIC: They’re regular how? I mean, are they always off or are they —

CALLER: Huh? They’re usually about the same time every month, so.

CLINIC: So they’re usually regular?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay, and you’ve had unprotected sex?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you said it was December?

CALLER: Like the day after Christmas.

CLINIC: One moment. (pause) Hello?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, according to the date that you’re saying you’d be about 9 weeks and a day.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, what does that mean?

CLINIC: You would qualify for the surgical.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, those are done on a walk-in basis on Monday, Thursdays and Fridays.

CALLER: Okay. Well, me and my boyfriend were talking about this, and he said that he would take care of everything and pay for everything, but we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he’s paying?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. One moment.

CLINIC: This is Rosie.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Hi. You have some questions?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I was — I don’t’ know who I was talking to, but she said that — well I was worried about like — well I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents if I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We don’t tell your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So yeah. No. We would not tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I haven’t had a period since like December 26, and I’m worried about it, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you come in for a short pregnancy test?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you were sexually active and you’re not using any protection?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. Come on in and we’ll do the pregnancy test, and then we’ll take it from there.

CALLER: Okay. Well my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, and when we were all talking about this, and — but we just don’t want a whole bunch of people to know.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It just would be — it would be you.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: And we would not tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay. He doesn’t want anybody to know, so —

CLINIC: What do you mean?

CALLER: Like we don’t want to apply for any like state funds or anything.

CLINIC: That’s fine. There are no state-funded abortion services.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So why don’t you come in. Let’s do a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: You’d have to– yeah. We could make an appointment for you to get on the birth control method.

CALLER: Well how long does it take for all that?

CLINIC: Usually a few weeks.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control would anyone have to know?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what time do you do the pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We do them today until 6:00, and we’ll be doing them tomorrow until, from 9:00 to 5:00.

CALLER: Okay, but do I need an appointment or is it just —

CLINIC: No, we do them on a drop-in basis.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
