(Dialing, phone ringing)

CLINIC: Summit Medical Center. Louqueida (ph) speaking. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: For how many weeks?

CALLER: I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: Do you know the first date of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You’re about 10 weeks.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: About 10 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: From 6 to 12 weeks, 365 for the light sedation, 405 for the heavy, and an extra 50 if you’re RH negative.

CALLER: If I’m already what?

CLINIC: if you’re RH negative, it’s an extra 50.

CALLER: Oh, okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. You say you’re only 14 years old?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: No, ma’am. You have to be 18 without a parent.

CALLER: Okay. Is there any way not to have to tell my parents at all though?

CLINIC: Well, unless you get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: It’s where you will go before a judge, and he’ll make the decision on whether or not you can make the decision on your own. But they’re not giving them in Birmingham.

CALLER: Oh, they’re not?

CLINIC: So you can try to call Tuscaloosa.

CALLER: Tuscaloosa?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. They’re doing it there.

CALLER: Do they usually say yes?

CLINIC: I think so there.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test just to make sure? It’s just that I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you live in Birmingham?

CALLER: I live in Fairfield.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s fine. They’re $10.

CALLER: Ten dollars?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Oh, okay, yeah. They’re $10.

CALLER: Okay. But if I came in for a pregnancy test, would my parents have to know about that?

CLINIC: No, not for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So would it be all right if my boyfriend brought me?

CLINIC: Yeah, if it’s just for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control the same day?

CLINIC: You’re 14?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: So you’re 13.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Hold on. Let me check, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

AUTOMATED VOICE: For more information and a confidential appointment, please speak to one of our telephone counselors to schedule your consultation. Summit Medical Center will help you understand your choices and alternatives. Thank you for holding. One our trained health specialist will be right with you.

To meet your comprehensive healthcare needs, Summit Medical Center offers a wide range of women’s healthcare services. Surgical abortion services are provided up to 22 weeks, and medical abortions — abortions by pill — up to seven weeks. Summit offers you the opportunity to have local or IV twilight sedation during your procedure. Because our doctors are concerned with your health and safety, they require comprehensive lab work and a diagnostic ultra sound prior to your surgery. In addition, you’ll receive counseling from our qualified counseling staff.

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh?

CLINIC: To get birth control with your parent, you have to be 14 and above.

CALLER: Oh. So I should wait until after my birthday?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. After the 19th when I’m going to be 14, would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills? It’s just I can’t drive yet?

CLINIC: Will he be able to do what?

CALLER: Pick up the birth control pills.

CLINIC: No. You have to come in for an exam. And there’s a charge. You have to call back and make an appointment.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Would you hold, please?

CALLER: All right.

AUTOMATED VOICE: Care providers can exam you until you understand the pros and cons of these issues.

CLINIC: It’s $40.

CALLER: Okay. Do I need an appointment to come in for that, for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Not for a pregnancy test. We do those from 10 until 4.

CALLER: 10 until 4 today?

CLINIC: Monday through Friday.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
